Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

Whenever someone comes to a forum or social media group and asks "how can I make money online" I will ALWAYS respond with something along the lines of they need to start blogging and learn.  Everyone wants to start off with a successful blog, but that simply doesn't happen without hard work and dozens of mistakes along that way that you can learn from.  Bloggers just starting out will buy their first domain, edit the nameservers to aim at their new hosting account, and add WordPress with a free theme to their hosting account then complain a week later when they haven't made $3,000 lol.  If making money online were that easy, I'd be making $300,000 a day and not working longer than it would take to pay my team of writers and virtual assistants to do the work for me haha Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out  I've started plenty of blogs, and written for many of the top news platforms, and I know for a fact that I haven't hit my peak just yet.  I know that it will still take years of work before I can consider myself "successful" but that's just because I know my own goals are different than most Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

When new bloggers start off they have unrealistic expectations, which is why they make a bunch of mistakes.  You'll never do everything right when you start off, but with this discussion you'll be able to figure out a few things that you shouldn't be doing, then apply that to your content Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

New bloggers sell too much in their content
One of the biggest problems I've noticed is that new bloggers will always be selling when they write up their content.  They will think that all their content needs to be selling because it will increase their chances of making a sale, but in reality it actually hurts their conversions because people will try to find informative content and just find sales pitches left and right.

In order to boost your conversions, you need to add QUALITY content to your blog, this means you can't pitch or try to convince anyone you're the best.  Sure, you can add a banner to the sidebar, but that's not you pitching to them.  If someone wants to purchase from you, they will be able to find your "Buy Now" button with a few clicks.  Of course, you'll have to make it easy for them to find your service or product pages, but that's pretty obvious Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

New bloggers don't develop a personality
Another problem is that new bloggers don't really develop a personality within their writing.  They will just sound robotic the entire time, across hundreds of posts, because they think that's what quality content is.  I'm here to tell you that if you develop a personality within your content you will actually sell more due to people being able to trust you easier.  They will see that the content is written by a real person behind a keyboard and not a corporate robot just trying to churn out content that is only there to boost the sales of the business lol Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

Look at my writing style, it's not perfect, but it's mine Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out  I add in smileys often and even throw an LOL or HAHA into my content because it's just how I write.  I'll text friends and family the same way, and it carried over to how I write content.  Of course, my texts to friends and family are more personalized, but that's to be expected Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out  <-- See, another smiley

New bloggers write short content with more images
It doesn't matter if you're a new blogger or a seasoned veteran, you shouldn't be flooding your content with images.  It doesn't matter if you blog for Instagram, which revolves around images, you don't want to flood people away from your content that they're trying to read.  Think about it, how many times have you read an amazing 2,000+ word article and it has dozens of images in it?  Not very often!

A good rule of thumb is to add an image, or something like an enlarged quote, after every 300 to 400 words of content.  The only way you should be adding a bunch of images, that might flood the content, is if you're posting a "How To" that requires images because they're informative.  If you're not writing a step by step process of something that has images as a sort of visual learning process, you shouldn't be adding a bunch of visuals.  People are there for your content, not your images, so let them read and add in page breaks with a few images and even an enlarged quote to keep them reading and happy Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

New bloggers think riches come quick
It's actually mind boggling how many new bloggers, and even webmasters, think riches come quick when they just start off.  Sure, if you've been working online for 10+ years and set up a blog to make money, you might expect it to turn a profit early on, but that doesn't work without experience.  If you're just starting off, you need to know that you're not going to make much money (or any at all) and you just need to invest your time and knowledge into content creation to bring more people in day after day.  The more content you generate each day just gives you more chances to make money.

Think about it, if you just started blogging and have 10 articles on your website, you won't get nearly as much traffic as a blog that has 1,000 articles.  It's all a numbers game, as well as an authority one as well, and you need both to take over your niche.  If you can write up 10 high quality articles a day, you can start to take over your niche quicker than someone who is just posting 1 a day Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

New bloggers target the most difficult niches, then complain about rankings
I'm actually a statistic for this because when I started off 15+ years ago I targeted mesothelioma and pay day loans lol Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out  I was blogging part time for about 6 months and eventually sold the blogs for a few grand, but I never even came close to cracking into the top 10 for any of the top keywords in either of those niches.  I never complained about rankings, I learned how to rank over time and quickly figured out that my niches of choice were next to impossible to rank in, so I moved on lol.

Many new bloggers complain about not ranking in a short amount of time, then we figure out what their industry is, and we laugh because they've been blogging for a few months and their competitors have been doing this for 10+ years Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

If you want to make money from blogging, you need to do your keyword research and only target niches that aren't impossible to rank in.  Sure, you can rank in any niche since the internet is sort of an equal opportunity employer, but you likely don't have the resources a multi-billion dollar corporation does, so you might as well pick a different niche that is easier to rank in lol.

In conclusion
Blogging isn't difficult and you can always make money from it through content writing.  People need to learn, and the search engines are always looking for content where people can get quality information, so give it to them.  Write great content that doesn't pitch your services or products and isn't flooded with your images, and you will be rewarded over time with sweet sweet traffic that is 100% free Top 5 mistakes new bloggers make when starting out

I started with third party sites. Before I launched my own blog, I has been already writing on various sites. The longest time I have ever spend on a writing site is 5 years. The site is called Hubpages. I thank hubpages for all the lessons I learned about writing and publishing online. Apart from publishing articles, Hubpages also allowed affiliate marketing. We were offered amazon and ebay affiliate (no defunct). In the beginning I thought if I had more products I will sell more, however, this was one of my mistakes. I learned by trial and error. If you limit to 1-2 products, chances of selling are higher than if you are promoting more than 5 products.

I think that's also a good way to start your own blog. Besides learning more about writing or some knowledge from those writing sites, I think you might have already created a network out there or perhaps also good reputation too.

I have heard a lot about Hubpages, but I haven't start writing online yet when it was popular. I agree that it is always good to focus on just the few high priority ones, rather than spreading our effort on many things, then we will be more successful.

I always enjoy reading your successful stories and journey on this path, as I am still learning from writing and reading from these online writing sites and hopefully I will be able to start my own blog or business one day later. Thanks for sharing!

When I was publishing on hubpages, my articles on hubpages were generating 1000 views in a day. However, I am far from generating this number of views on my blog. My hubpages articles were making me around $75 every month, however my blog is not generating even $10 in a month. These days I am trying to figure out what has gone wrong.

One good advantage in staying with this site is the learning that we can get so we need not do a hit or miss style of freelancing. At least we get to know of the experiences of others that we can avoid or we can imitate for our benefit. A trial and error basis is only good for small projects but for bloggers I don’t think it is a good idea since there are so many bloggers that tell us about their mistakes that we should not repeat.

This site has been very beneficial for my blogging venture. There is so much to learn from experience blogger. When I started blogging, like most of the new bloggers, I though I would make tons of money. However, now I have come to realize that making money from blog is very hard. Since I started small, I did not end up losing lot of money. If I had spent a lot of money, I would have suffered a huge loss because my blogs did not earn anything for two years.

A great list but another big mistake that I often see the new bloggers make is the fact that they don't blog often.

At first they give out too many posts but then within a week they run out of good content and post less often.

That is how they begin losing daily visitors - at the start it is important to keep building up your audience and delivering constant high-quality content.

Tronia,
If I were to continue in your critique of blogging mistakes without admitting my own fault here, I would be a hypocrite. if I have ever had a complaint about my blogs, it is that I am too inconsistent with the posts. Sometimes I post a lot, and sometimes I ghost the blog for an indefinite period of time, and when I used to do this, I would definitely lose traffic and rightfully so. Having a set and disciplined schedule, in terms of blogging, is one of the first ways to keep an audience--they are depending upon your consistency.

Consistency is the key. You should be publishing at least one blog post every month. If you are not regular, you will be losing regular traffic. Search engines also give much value to the blogs that are updated regularly.

vinaya,
I am actually trying to do up to one post a week at one of my blogs, but it can be challenging due to all of my other responsibilities, and it seems like more and more things just keep piling up every day! Of course the search engines are going to lean towards the current content, and I am smart enough to understand this, but I am just having a tough time keeping up with the goals I have set for myself. It is hard to balance my "day job" with my freelancing gigs.

I think one post in a week is good. I believe if you are publishing too much, you will be losing your regular readers. As for search engine traffic is concerned, it takes time to index your content, and even longer is reaching the top position. You might get traffic from social media, however, posting on social media does not mean guaranteed traffic. Too much posting on social media can also be considered spamming.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
Right--I agree--I do not want to bombard my audience with overkill, but I do want to post enough to keep their interest and to keep them coming back. I will most likely never reach the "top" position in my genre or niche, but I feel that I am providing good content, and as long as I stay consistent, I should be doing more than enough in terms of what i want to accomplish. I am also, as you mentioned, very careful about how much I post on social media. Like I said, I don't want to come across as annoying overkill guy.

If a large portion of your traffic comes from the blog subscribers, having more fresh contents means you are turning them away. The subscribers are not going to read everything you have published. Giving them something to read every week and making them want more is the key to success if your traffic comes from subscription.

I'm new to blogging and creating contents every day is my big challenge. Earning through my blog is not my focus now because I have so much to learn. I just keep on reading from different forums and blogs to expand my knowledge. It is really difficult to get noticed online when you are just starting out because there are lots of blogs out there that are already established. But I believe that if I just continue learning, one day my efforts will be paid off.

If you are new to online publishing, it might be difficult to get noticed. However, if you write well and produce great contents, everything will be a lot easier. In my observation, fear is the great problem for a new blogger. He fears that he will fail. However, without attempting, how can anyone be sure about failure., Blogging success is related to trial and error. You will learn to blog by blogging and not by reading.

It is really true. Fear is what holds back for beginners. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of being criticised. Fear of making mistakes. I actually have fears as I started out in blogging and I still have those until now. But I keep on fighting it by improving my skills through reading and watching videos of successful people.

The new bloggers are afraid if losing money (because it cost money to launch a self-hosted blog), they are afraid of failure (the high percentage of new bloggers give up blogging in less than one year). If you forget everything and continue to publish, you will definitely succeed.

The one mistake I think people make is not having connection. That's some serious mistake. And they don't even pay attention for the same. I think more people you connect the easier for you to have backlinks. And more easier for you to understand the content creation. And another thing is that bloggers can have lot better impact on things. So mistakes do happen and we have to understand how to work around them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Connection is the key to drive traffic from social media promotion and email marketing. You need a large following on social media sites to bring visitors to your website. Numbers are important, however, equally important is your followers' "interest" in your niche. Youn will have to build followers genuinely interested in your niche.

Yes connection can get you backlink. At this moment that's how I am seeing the connection. To get some backlink and some level of the support. This way I don't have to worry about the new blogger changes. And also don't want to worry about how the things may or may not go wrong. That's what I have learned.

One of the mistakes that a new blogger do is over sharing of contents on social media. If you share too much, you will be spamming. Another mistake is sharing only the links. While sharing, it is important to write a teaser. The teaser will make people want to know more. The best way to maximize sharing is building connections, responding to their posts so that they will reciprocate.

I agree over sharing leads to the issues. I guess initial people should band together and share the links with each other. And once that gets momentum. Then they can be more specific and the niche only. That way I think blog carnivals can make more sense too.

Creating a group of like-minded people (especially the bloggers in your niche) is very beneficial. This is a two-way process )you check my blog, I will check yours). The best way to do this is create a facebook group, invite the bloggers to join the group and ask them to share their links and encourage them to visit their fellow bloggers' links. When you visit someone blog, he is likely to return you a favor.

These are something we really should avoid as new bloggers. Though I am not really a new blogger, as I have a personal blog for more than a year, it's not for business purpose but only a blog where I write about my thoughts and life. I am thinking of setting up a blog for business purpose, and I will surely take note of these points. I like the idea of developing our own personality. I think it's always good to be ourselves, or set up our own image, wherever we are.

Thank you for sharing your ideas. I will continue to learn more and also try to avoid these mistakes.

I have been regularly writing online since 2010 and I created my own blogs (self-hosted) only in 2015. Therefore, I am not new to blogging, however, when it comes to making money from blogs, I am still a failure. I have been unable to generate a good revenue from my blogs.
The basics of blogging success are branding your blog and developing an authority on your niche.

There are two things that can drive a newbie blogger insane. Niches and riches! They pick a great niche and expect to get rich. Not realizing that the niche they picked, 50 bazillion other people picked the same niche! The competition is fierce!! They get discouraged and quit. (O.o) They walk off scratching their head and going "What was I thinking? Why did I think I would earn money?" But if they can get beyond that, analyze their competition and focus on rising above the crowd, and not give up ... their efforts can become worthwhile.

Also ... new bloggers don't focus on developing their online presence. Newbie bloggers make the mistake of thinking that because their content is really good, people are going to find it and read it. That does not happen! They need to let others know they exist. Whether they like it or not, they need to establish a presence on social media. Why? Because that's where the people are.

I really liked your post here. No kidding--I think that some part of all of us newbies had grandiose delusions as we embarked upon our online endeavors. This naive positivity is great, in a way, but it can also be a bit crushing in terms of the disappointment it can bring. Like you mentioned above, the key is to get beyond the initial disappointments (like in all things in life) and push forward towards gradual future success. I have also struggled with defining an online presence, and as you mentioned above, it is pretty easy to have your voice just disappear or dissolve into the "bazillion" others out there who you are competing with.

You have nailed it right! Niches and riches!
I was one of those who discovered a niche and thought blogging will make me rich. When I launched my self hosted blog, I was already earning a decent income from various writing websites. I thought, the people who were reading my articles on various websites, will obviously come to my blog. However, this is not happening. I still have more visitors on my hubpages articles compared to the traffic on my four blogs combined.

I was lucky to have been taught the rudiments when I started blogging. I have learned that the quality and length of the blog is very important. My blogs have a minimum of 2 pages of word document and a maximum of 5 pages. But with the quality, the content should have a lot of information to share. During that time, I really didn’t know about images so my blogs were just the text. But later on when I had been including images, my articles looked better and nicer to read.

When I started my blog, I already knew about a lot of things. I had 5 years experience in online writing, I had attended courses on SEO and digital marketing. However, having knowledge is one thing and implementing that knowledge is another thing. You might not get the desired results even if you implement all of the things you know.
