Write the reason you're deleting this FAQ

I read somewhere that too much working at night isn't healthy for one's body and mind. A particular writer mentioned developing insomnia as a result of his constantly being awake in the night to work.

Do you have such experience with your working at night? Is it harmful to one's health by always staying too long awake at night to work?

I think for anyone if you're not getting enough sleep for a prolonged period you're going to feel the effects of it. A lack of sleep can cause a number of things - foggy memories, irritability, a difficulty in focusing on tasks - which are all bad things if you're trying to concentrate on writing! Sleep needs to be a priority!

It has been happening to me and it is pretty sad. I don't really enjoy my sleep anymore nowadays and it is something that I should be looking at improving. Also, I noticed that there are times when I will forget the things that I set out to do in a particular day.

Having more than enough sleep is much preferable. We need to have good rest if we hope to accomplish difficult tasks. Lack of sleep can also affect our performance. Our quality of thinking becomes impaired when we're too tired.

That's always the problem with lack of sleep. I also found out that being sleepy can sometimes feel like you're drunk.

It has similar symptoms of drowsiness and lack of concentration. This is why we tend to slur our words whenever we're falling asleep.

That could be an early sign of overwork. It's when our bodies are not getting sufficient rest after a hard day's work. Sleep is important for our bodies. It's the time when we recover and improve our overall functions for the next day.

Unless you make it a habit, these effects will be gone in a couple of days. Puffy eyes, tiredness during the day and low energy can be fixed with a good night's sleep, so don't worry if you have to pull an all-nighter every once in a while.

That's nice of you to share. However, I still would recommend we avoid them as much as possible. We can never belittle the limited extent of our body's capacity.

Sleep is the best recuperation we get on a daily basis. So compromising on that part can and will eventually lead to possible complications. I just hope that we don't pull all night shifts more than once a month.

After that happened several times, I make a point in stopping every two hours to stretch my legs, drink a glass of water, and be aware of the time. That way, I can go to sleep in a reasonable hour.

What I don’t want in lacking sleep is the drowsy feeling that I sometimes lose my focus and I become forgetful. When I have work in the office and I had to stay awake all night due to some activity like a party, I would take the next day off instead of going to work with a bad condition of my mind. When I was younger it is just fine to stay late and wake up early but at my age now that is not advisable anymore.

Well, working at night is fine as long as you had enough sleep during the day, like 8 hours of sleep during the day and working at night will be okay, I had a work before as a call center agent, we have our night shift, and I can say that there's nothing wrong to work at night as long as you have enough sleep during the day.

I’ve worked at night before too in a similar environment, but science actually says too much work at night isn’t good for you!

Long-term night shift work is associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, as well as metabolic problems, heart disease, ulcers, gastrointestinal problems and obesity. ... People who work night shifts or rotating shifts also often don't sleep enough, and long-term sleep deprivation is known to be bad for health.

That’s directly from the National Sleep Foundation. The quality of sleep a person gets during the day just isn’t the same as night time sleep because of our circadian rhythms.

According to the article that I've read, our body usually recharges from 11PM to 4AM. It's the time that we should rest our body. Working too late at night could result in health problems. Sleeping during night time which our body needs is different from sleeping during the daytime. It's harmful if you don't get any sleep within 24-48 hours. But working at nights doesn't mean you can't sleep during the day right? A simple solution is to adjust your sleeping schedule. If you're awake at night then sleep in the daytime and vise versa. A person can even go without sleep for extended periods of time but after that he should have a good long sleep.

I like working at night. It's quiet and I can concentrate better. And i like the cool air during the wee hours past midnight, I always open my window or the main door when I'm working at this hour. I sleep during the day about 2-4 hours and I would feel refreshed and rested again ready for another nights work.

When I worked nights, my life changed drastically. At first, it absolutely was coping with the adjustment of my time. When I got through that, and time went along, it appeared to change my outlook on life. I lived in a very different way than my family and friends. I felt a lot of isolated.

That’s such a good point you make about night work being quite isolating. It’s very difficult if you’re working at night but all of your family and friends are working normal schedules during the day. Sleep deprivation may be bad for your health. The negative effects will vary from individual to individual. Some people for example can sleep for only two or three hours and it's enough rest for them.

I don't work at night and couldn't even if I tried so the negative effects of sleep deprivation have never had to worry me. In any case as I doubt this would affect me much because for over 15 years I only manage about three hours of sleep every night.

As much as i know about the health implications of working constantly till late at night, I always see myself doing it; it has become a reoccuring decimal. When i think of how much more i can deliver if i decide to stretch more into the night, coupled with the fact that I'm not readily chanced to do my writings during the day, I often see myself keeping late night pearing through my phone's screen. And I don't escape the implications —tiredness and drowsiness during the day and all that. Most times I started the day tired, and ended it that way, only to feel i still need to do some typing before going to bed in the night. But I'm trying to cub this, by finding much time to rest during weekends, and trying to organize my day in such a way that I'd have a little time for my writing, so that whrn night comes I'd have little or no work to do

I can’t say that I’ve been affected by working too late at night, simply because I make an active effort of not doing so. I’ve had problems with insomnia for most of my life, so I went through a whole list of techniques and strategies in order to remedy my sleeping issues.

One of those techniques was to make a habit of putting down any work or psychologically strenuous activities at least two to three hours before bed. I can honestly say it’s made a huge difference in my sleep habits. These days I get up early in the morning, get all of my work done by mid-afternoon, and then the rest of the day is just for leisurely activities and hobbies.

Thinking too much about work or another project before bed inevitably results in a sleepless night.

I’ve read a lot of studies about insomnia and other sleep problems, and I feel like for many people it can be that they are attached to devices right until they go to bed. Even things like the light emitted by computers, tablets and smartphones makes our brains not understand its time for sleep - and for a prolonged period of time that can be really detrimental.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP

You make a good point about light being emitted from our devices. Our circadian rhythm is actually influenced by the levels of light our eyes are exposed to, specifically in the blue wavelength. When we’re exposed to blue light, our body doesn’t produce melatonin because it’s under the assumption that it’s daytime and it isn’t time for sleep yet.

Guess what emits blue light? Our monitors and phones. That’s why there are blue light filter applications (I use flux) which filter out blue light around sunset, so that you can still look at your screen without it influencing your circadian rhythm.

I turn mine on about two hours before bedtime if I’m still at the computer, and it helps me get to sleep a lot faster.

I agree with this analysis. If you are a night owl it is really easy to get insomnia, when you want to sleep at normal hours. For the past year I have struggled with this. I have tried to set my body to sleep between 10pm-12am, and wake up by 7.00am. It has been struggle. The worst thing about sleeping late is that your body does not get enough rest and you are not productive and the next day you feel sluggish.

It really depends on you as a person and trying to find a schedule that fits your lifesttle. I've been able to craft a business and personal life schedule that accounts for the fact that anything I do before 9am is going to be terrible and all the work I do at night is of a significantly higher quality. This has been true my entire life and no matter how I've restructured my life or learned new habits it has never benefited me to try to be a morning person.

That being said, I have struggled with not staying up too late, trying to get all my work done in one night. That's also an equal recipe for disaster. I think the important thing is to understand how much sleep your body needs (some people its only 5 hours while for others it could be 10) and creating a lifestyle that will let you be your healthiest while also maintaining a healthy and successful career.

Staying up at night changes your body and your mind. If you're thinking about starting to work at night, take some precautions first. Set an hour to sleep and under no circumstance break that rule, no matter how much work you have. If you do, your body cycle will start changing and it will be very difficult to revert it back to its normal state.

I don't think I agree with that article. For the first couple of months sure, one has to sacrifice some things to achieve others, but if you are spending all your energy in work, leaving you to become ill or have serious health issues in the future, then you're doing something wrong and that job is not good for you. It's all a balance, for instance, if you're better working at night because of silence (I prefer working at night too) try to get at least 7 hours of sleep a day, be it all at once and wake up late, or take several 20-minute naps during the day. Just think that if you start getting sick, it will be worse as you won't be able to work at all.

If you work in shifts, it is harder to eat healthily or exercise regularly. Not only is it harder to get a salad at night, but it's also more likely that you want to eat something else to stay awake. This makes people feel tempted by snacks and takeaways. It may be more convenient to eat pizza or hamburgers, and these foods can make you feel better, but obviously eating them every night is not very healthy.

Also, you are more likely to crawl to the gym at the end of a workday than to do it at the end of a shift if you have been awake all night and the only thing you crave is sleep.

In some jobs, it is inevitable to work during the night. There are hospitals that must operate, airplanes to fly and stores to keep open, as we become a 24/7 society. With careful planning and a bit of peace during the day, it is possible to work all night and still sleep eight hours the next day.

Yes that is really true since we have different works which would only means that we can have also a different schedules. If we are working as a call center agent then we cannot really avoid to have a night shift schedule for some time, and waking up late at night to work is one of the tough situation that we should overcome if we are not yet used to it.

Exactly. Some people adapt really fast, others take a while, and some never really get used to it. I guess it's a matter of listening to your body: after a few weeks, if it hasn't adapted at all yet, then something is not right.

It greatly affects me because I have to wake at 5 in the morning to get prepared for my 7 AM class. I always promise myself that I won't stay awake later than 10 PM but I can't do it. It makes me suffer in my class, I can't focus because my eyelids are falling.

There are mornings when I might wake up at the time that I am not used to. My sleep cycle gets altered and so is the schedule for the next day.

Hey there!
I remember working for a company from the US (I'm Europe), so I had to stay up late to fit their timezone. I was qualified thanks to my English skills, and I simply couldn't miss the opportunity to work there (they were paying really good). At first, it was very hard and I began to have anxiety and anger problems. But eventually, it grew on me. I changed my sleeping hours and I adjusted perfectly fine. Insomnia and I are having a ball right now as I type this reply. Insomnia is just one of the effects of excessive work and lack of sleep. Another effect is lethargy which just leaves you tired and lazy through out the day. But partner that with insomnia then it's just awful. I've had to deal with this a lot as a sudden shift in my night schedule could easily disrupt my sleep.

I had this work before that have a GY shift or you will work from midnight to sunrise. I chose to work on that schedule for 1 year and it wasn't easy to sleep in daylight. I also take some multivitamins to help my body. Even though I have a complete sleep and still I feel so weak and I am still sleepy the whole night and I am so energetic in the morning but I don't have any complications after that and I already have back my normal sleeping routine.
