Skills or Knowledge?

In your opinion, which do you prefer? A person with skills? or a person with Knowledge/Wisdom? In this instance, I'm referring to skills as in something you train for. Whereas, wisdom is innate such as inspired or naturally talented but not trained.

Wisdom is everything in the world as we can see that lots of people enjoy life today because of the wise decisions that they have made in life. I think that you should also not undermine those that have got the skills as this is necessary for the development of the world that we are at the moment.

I agree. Both are important. But skills are more practical compared to knowledge and wisdom. However, you can more easily acquire skills if you have the latter. They're essential for living a good life.

I agree with you, if you have skills and you love it and want to learn a lot, then wisdom is easy to penetrate in your head.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Wisdom is not easy to attain. It's more of a higher level of understanding. Skill is when you're good at doing something. It's gained from experience. So let's learn more as each day goes by.

I actually have some sort of disagreements with this fact because regardless of what people think skills are actually contributed to by wisdom. It is not a must for a person to have the classroom knowledge but also the field wisdom helps to accentuate skills.

That's definitely correct, you can acquire the wisdom from your skills.

Skill is required for a daily living, tho having not enough knowledge can make that skill useless, I guess this two can't be debated.

I agree when you have the skills but fail to know how to use them properly. You might be low on skills but with the right knowledge still, capitalize on the low skills and achieve greater progress than the one with a lot of skills but little utilization wisdom.

Your 're correct. As we grow older some of us grow wiser maybe because they have learn from the mistakes they have made. Skill can be easily acquired but not all have enough wisdom.

I agree. Wosdom can turn you into a person that gains from the skills of others if you know how to use it well. If you are skilled then you have to work for someone else who is much wiser and has opened the business.

I believe both are needed. They are of the same importance. One is not good without the other. They go hand in hand together.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's right. You need both in order to function well in life. Skills help you get jobs and security. Wisdom enables you to choose what's right for you and other people.

Wisdom also helps you to advance yourself at the workplace at a place where the rest of your coworkers have the same skills but only one of you can make manager, director, ceo and so on.

Yes that is exactly true, they are related on each other and they must be both needed in order to have a better results. We can do more great things if we have the knowledge and skills into certain things because it could give a lot of benefits and even money as well.

Wisdom is the key to success in life. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I think you can't have skills if you dont have wisdom.

In other eords then you are saying that both are good. Supposing you need to choose only one, then what will you opt for? There are many wise people who ended up dying poor.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

i think that people have gotten lost in the middle of this discussion as a majority are not differentiating between knowledge and innate wisdom which are two different things. Knowledge can be acquired through school while wisdom tends to be more natural.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Knowledge without skills cannot be of much help. Skills als come in handy. So I think both are equally important.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I also go for the wisdom because it is not only about ethics but it also involves the human relations and interactions. With the skills that we have we can do a particular job. But with the knowledge we can converse in the topics that we know even if we do not have the skills like being an astronaut or being a biological researcher. As long as we have the knowledge then the communication and transfer of ideas will be smooth.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't think Knowledge and Skills should be separated because I think both needs to be together at all times. However, if I am only allowed to have one for myself, I guess that would be skills.

I agree with you. Skills and knowledge go hand in hand. They are the things that make a person competent and successful. I wouldn't even dare to choose one though.

That's a scary way to put it. Dementia is probably one of the worst age related diseases. Same goes for Alzheimer's. I hope that we live a long and fruitful life. May we preserve the knowledge and memories we've gained over the years.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jaybee19
True. It's actually a bit scary to think about the future especially that no one can predict it for you. With our current diet and the pollution and the development of technology making people to become more and more lazy, I definitely think that there will be an increase with age related diseases like Dementia and Alzheimer's. That is actually why I am very passionate about learning foreign languages because I've read somewhere that learning other languages and being able to communicate using them can help decrease the chances of getting age related diseases like Dementia and Alzheimer's.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's cool. I've also read about that. The article said that exercising our minds can help prevent Alzheimer's and other age related mental disease. Eating natural and organic food definitely helps prolong our lifespan.

Like you said, pollution and environmental stress can cripple our immune system. Our bodies need a good living setting in order to stay strong.

True. That is why my grandma prefers to live in our province which is an Island with a rural setting. There, she is able to talk with her peers and can eat fresh fish that are given by her fishermen neighbors which is definitely good for her entire health. By God's grace, my Grandma is turning 80 this month and she doesn't look like a normal 80 year old woman because she can still do a lot of house chores.

Amazing! I hope we can also achieve that ripe age. I remember reading something about the perception of growing old.

Most people look at it negatively and see it as growing weaker. But others like us see it as a testament to how long we've lived and how blessed we are to still be alive on Earth.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jaybee19
I hope so too sir. I really want to grow old while not seeming too old to do at least some of the things I am used to do as a younger version of myself.

True. It's actually a bit saddening to think that it could also happen to us where a lot of people in our circle would look at us as weak individuals as we grow old while we, does not think the same way about ourselves. But anyways, I want to see it as a matter which I shouldn't mind so much because as we grow old, we will definitely fight for our own battles ourselves and our loved one's help will be there to make us strong.

Wisdom dwindles with age. One time you become old and senile even to be able to recognize your home.

One of the saddest truths in life. We're very fortunate if we're able to live long in life without having gone through it. Some people manage to pass away without losing their knowledge and wisdom.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

By the time that you are old enough to lose track of things and forget even your home then I think that you would have lost the ability and skills you had even longer ago. Like the body depreciates before the mind that is why the old rely on the young to do tasks for them as they are left with the role of delegation and guidance provision.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, it's a sad reality. I hope we can still function well by the time we reach that age. It's really eye opening to see how aging affects our roles in life.

It would be nice to still be active despite growing old. I've seen many elderly in Asian countries still going strong.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Depends on the skill. Generally as people age though they were quite skilled at doing something when they were younger, they lose that ability. Not completely sure, but their competency drop significantly. Wisdom and knowledge could be useful for a little while longer I suppose before someone goes senile.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You have a point. I'd prefer wisdom because we can learn skills faster with the help of it. There's a saying about not working harder. We should work smarter. That's how many successful people achieved great things in a short span of time.

I'd say that wisdom is more important. Skills are something attainable through practice and discipline. Knowledge and wisdom is different. You'd have to go through a lot in life. And most of the time it's simply something you're born with. Either you have it or you don't.

I think having skills is a form of knowledge in itself - it's a form of knowledge you apply to the real world.

If you only have knowledge, but don't know how to actually explain things to people or get things done in the real world, then your knowledge isn't much use at all!

For me both is important. Skill is an carried out form of knowledge. Our body muscle groups emerge as used to of doing that specific task. They circulate exactly and follow the coordinates with accuracy. A skillful driver will not mistakenly push the brake pedal in comparison to a naive driver. His palms and legs will automatically flow in the course of his journey.

I read a quote on twitter, information is what you get at school. Wisdom is applying that information. I'm not sure you can have one without the other. We learn to get the information, but we need to train ourselves on how to apply. As an employer I would prefer someone whose wisdom of course. Many employers complain that graduate are not job ready. They have no wisdom because they can't apply anything that they have learnt.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Skills can be acquired. And passion for for what you learn can be induced. It could be the monetary reward that could get you love what you do or the fear of all the bad stuff that can happen if you don't do something you may not love.

Anyway, I'd prefer to have wisdom first before I go for the skills because that way at least I'd know which skills would be most valuable.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's how I feel as well. Wisdom goes a long way towards establishing our lives. Not only does it give us something irreplaceable, it also makes us aware of important things in life. We can only appreciate what's truly significant through wisdom.

Skills can be obtained through hard work. That's why they're called that.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Wisdom is useless unless applied. Application of wisdom is called skill. Both interconnect with each other so choosing between the two is unnecessary. For example, you have a knowledge in SEO. That knowledge is useless to you unless you are applying it and making profit from it. It is not enough that you know. We have to take actions and apply what we know.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Can't skill be classified as knowledge? The both are acquired, can be improved upon, and can equally be replaced by new ones. A simple definition of skill is "technical knowledge", used more for practical workings; yet it is a kind of knowledge. You cannot compare the both, in my opinion, as i believe a person with technical knowledge takes of from where someone with theoritical knowledge left.

I believe that this two are equally important. It is never enough to learn just one of this two in order to be excellent in your craft. You need to have knowledge and be skilled to do your craft excellently. Knowledge is never ending, it is ever growing. Skills are always improving overtime, you need to train to increase the level of your skills. It never stops.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

To some extent, someone would argue that knowledge is more important because in some scenarios, knowledge is seem as a powerful tool if you know how to use it to get what you want from anyone.

I actually believe that to some extent in our world today, knowledge is very much important and can be worth millions. Why do you think the CIA still wax strong? It's as a result of its power in spy network.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jpk0007
Well, I think that it must ideally be a combination of these two. Skill without knowledge is something which won't be able to take you too far. One needs the knowledge to use his skills effectively. On the other hand, if you just have the knowledge of a subject and have not trained yourself to implement that knowledge then it is of no use. Knowledge without skills and proper training is going to be meaningless. If you have the proper knowledge and the training required to implement that knowledge, you will be able to use your knowledge in an effective manner.

Knowledge and skills are sometimes used interchangeably and it is believed that one has much importance over the other. I will honestly say that this confuses me and I really don't know how to differentiate it. So I'm just going to use the basic definition of these words and use a simple example. According to the article that I have read, knowledge is the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. For example, we might all know what SEO is about. But simply knowing what it can do to a website, doesn't mean that we are all an SEO expert or we can do SEO by ourselves. While skills is the actual doing or putting into action of our knowledge. Skills are developed by transferring the knowledge through years of practice or experience. Back to the SEO example, if we know the processes involve in SEO, and we do it we our website or to different clients many times, over the years we will develop our skills on SEO.

I personally think that without the other, one will not be useful. Both skills and knowledge are important and that these make a person whole and complete. Without knowledge, you cannot gain and use properly the skills that you ought to have. On the other hand, without skills, the knowledge that you have acquired all throughout the years will be useless. You will become a useless person since you don't put your knowledge into something more tangible. So, these two should really go and work together.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I'd say having skills to do the job definitely helps out. I have learned that some of the times having some level of knowledge about doing the job means you can earn money. And that flow needs to be understood as well. So one should be learning the skills at the right time. That being said, skills take time to form and one has to be focused on how they do things the better way.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Both knowledge and skills are very important in my opinion. If you have both of these qualities, it would be the best in my opinion but if you must choose one, I think that I would going with skill depending on the kind of environment I found myself in. If it's a society that is skills oriented, having knowledge alone would be useless.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Hmm... Skills or knowledge. Well, you could not have skills if you do not have knowledge. I believe those two tend to work together. If I am going to be hiring a freelancer I would prefer that this particular freelancer have both the skills and knowledge needed to complete my tasks.

I have run to some issues in the past where a freelancer claimed they were an "expert". However, upon the delivery of work I could clearly tell that this freelancer was not an expert and the work was poor quality. I think sometimes people even fake having skills or knowledge just to make a buck. This is very cruel especially if you are selling service knowing full well that you do not have the education, skills or knowledge to complete the task you were paid to do.

I would never post a service if I did not have the skill or knowledge to complete a clients order. Seems pretty fair to me.

I think that both of them are incredibly valuable and have their place in the world, but those places are distinctly different.

Wisdom is an invaluable characteristic. You can consider it a life skill, because a person with wisdom is going to be adaptable to many situations. The thing is, all the wisdom in the world isn’t going to fix my plumbing if you don’t know how to repair a pipe. Wisdom says that my bathroom is going to be flooded if the pipe isn’t repaired, but skill actually repairs the pipe.

It might be kind of a bad and overly simplified analogy, but I think it gets the point somewhat across.

There is an old saying that goes, “Understand that, just as a bird needs two wings to fly, you must develop wisdom and compassion simultaneously. Wisdom is a correct understanding of reality and compassion is the desire for all beings to be liberated from the causes of suffering.”

This discussion reminded me of that quote because it is the same concept, just different wings. You need to develop both wisdom and skill in order to effectively maneuver through life.

It depends on the kind of work of the person. If you are hiring him for a particular job then the skills for that work is very important and it is probably the paramount element instead of wisdom and knowledge. I had seen peons and masons who don’t know much about life because they were not educated but they are good in their craft so they are earning good money when they work abroad. My brother-in-law said that in Saudi Arabia there were Thai carpenters who couldn’t speak English but they are good carpenters which mean the skills mattered most.

Off course, both are important. But i will say skills. I think that knowledge is something possible to reach for almost everyone. And you don't need the knowledge of the whole world. It is good to have as much knowledge as you can, but what is important is that you have the knowledge that you need for your work. It depends from work to work, but in practice, usually, you don't really need too much knowledge. Much more important is to have skills. Without them your knowledge is almost worth zero. In order to produce anything in your life, it is necessary to have the skills. Not everyone can have the skills. In the end, skills will determine your success in your job.
