Offline marketing to companies isn't difficult, it's just different

When it comes to business marketing, you are probably used to the typical AdWords or Facebook ads to get your business in front of the decision makers who will hopefully call you and sign up for your services.  Spending a ton of money on AdWords and Facebook ads might not result in any sales because you could simply be wasting all of your money on pointless clicks.  This usually happens when someone thinks their broad targeting campaign is going to make them millions of dollars overnight lol.  What you need to do is get offline and find the companies who are small, but want to be large, and don't exactly know how to grow their online sales.

Businesses are started up every day and it's up to you to get your website in front of them.  There are databases that show newly incorporated businesses, but they don't show any sort of phone number, email, or website in order to contact them directly and pitch your services.  I've searched through these state databases many times and have never found one that has a business's contact information lol.  You can, however, search online for the business name and you can usually find a facebook page or website that the owner set up in order to have an online presence.  After you find these golden nuggets of information, you can now start contacting them in hopes to selling them your services or products Offline marketing to companies isn

Other than that little nugget of information I posted above, there are many other tricks you can use to find offline companies who want to get online to be profitable, and they are:


Cold and Warm Calling
Cold calling has a negative description behind it because of how many call centers in India have spammed phone numbers day in and day out to get a sale, or steel phone credit card numbers.  If you do everything right, you can land a few clients from cold calling, and they will usually stick with you for a while if they are happy with your services.  I like to cold call after doing some research about a company.  I will figure out who runs the company and if I can call them directly.  If I just get an 800 number to a small business, I will write down the owners name and then give it a call.  I will wait for the "Hello, this is (name), how can I help you!" and if the persons name is the same as the business owners name, I will simply ask "Hi (name), are you the same (name) that owns (business name )?" and 9/10 they are the very same person lol.  This means you have the decision maker on the phone and you can get them to sign up with you if you do everything right.

You will need to entice them, without talking about pricing.  I'm in the SEO and Marketing industry so I'm pretty crucial for business owners to boost their sales through online engagement if they don't know what they are doing online.  I will tell them something along the lines of

I've been meaning to call you for a couple days now, but I wanted to do some research on your website (domain name here).  I found out that you aren't getting as much traffic as you should, and your competitors are actually topping the search engine results pages.  You're on page (2,3,4,5, etc.) for some good keywords, and I know we can get you to page one which would result in a lot more people coming to your site and purchasing/making appointments/walking through your doors.   Would you be interested in something like that?

If they say anything other than "No Thank You!" it means they are interested and you can get them to sign up with you.  Now you don't have to be selling SEO and Marketing services, you can literally be selling anything to them.

Warm Calling is similar to cold calling, but you don't have to call people who had no clue you were going to contact them.  Warm calls tend to close at a higher rate since they know what you're all about and that they need your services or products.


Going to Businesses
Just going to your cities downtown area and handing out flyers or talking to the business owners about your services and handing them your business card, you can get a decent amount of people wanting to sign up with you.  These businesses usually sell online as well as out of the stores they have.  You can entice them by saying you can increase their foot traffic AND increasing their website traffic through targeted facebook and google ads as well as doing to other marketing tactics.

Remember, everyone wants to make more sales, so that's your selling point.  Get them to think about how much money they can make after signing your contract, and you can get a bunch of people signing up with you... as long as you are overpriced lol.


Every Door Direct Mailing or EDDM
This is a more hands-off and easier way to get your information to people who are business owners because you can target areas that have more businesses than others.  You will usually hit a bunch of houses when doing EDDM, but the mailing system of your preference will show you exactly how many houses and businesses are on each route. 

I like to target areas where the median income is $115,000 or higher so it's easier for someone to sign up for a $750+ monthly service.

This type of marketing is fairly expensive, so you will need to fine tune it prior to pulling the trigger since your success rate will be roughly 0.3%   Basically, for every 1,000 mailings you send out you will get roughly 3 sales.  That's not a very good rate, but if you think you're going to profit off of your first mailing, you're insane.  You will need to do this a few times and then bootstrap the profits in order to target more areas.  Over time you will be able to hit many different areas, spending hundreds or thousands per mailing.




In Conclusion
There are many ways to target businesses other than using Adwords or Facebook ads.  You just need to get out there and do some work in order to get your business name in front of people who need you.  I've done all of the methods above and had success with each, but I wasn't successful the very first time I tried to do them, so don't get discouraged if you don't make any money starting these.

I have a brick and mortar business. My customers are locals, mostly countryside dwellers, therefore, I don't have a necessity to promote my business online. Offline marketing will be enough. Since I am a business owner, I do not have time to do the marketing, I will have to hire marketers to do the marketing of my business and the products I sell. One the best offline marketing methods is a door to door selling (you call it Every Door Direct Mailing or EDDM).

If you are well established and generate a good sale, you may have a budget to hire an expert for offline marketing, however, if you are just starting or have limited budget hiring a marketer for your business can be difficult. If the business owner does the marketing himself, it might cut the cost however, the owner may not be an expert in marketing or may not have enough time for marketing. Promotion is as important as Production.

The door-to-door style of marketing is very labor intensive that I don’t think it is still very effective today. But I have to agree that for a small business that is based in a neighborhood that has local clients for the market base, I guess the only available and practical marketing style would be the door-to-door because people in the neighborhood may not be easy to contact in the internet. Ringing on their door bell would be definitely an easier way to contact them.

Recently, I read about a company that sells water purifier through door-to door marketing. The sales figure explains the success of this company. Interestingly, this company does not spend a lot of money o traditional advertising like TV or newspaper ads. They are not even advertising through internet. Door-to door marketing is still an effective way to generate sales.

I think one great form of offline marketing is business cards. Place them in as many spots as possible. As a person who resides in a big city - I cannot tell you how valuable of a resource business cards have become to me in terms of promoting my brand.

Giving out business cards is what I do for my first time customers. Some even ask for more in order to promote on my behalf . This is better than cold calling

Anytime you send a customer a free gift, a bought gift or a contest prize - enclosing a business card is essential. In some cases you should enclose two. Just in case the person doesn't live alone.

I think it's more harder to convince the people offline. They can believe anything online. But offline convincing them is a bit harder. So that is something we have to check out if we are to be doing things. I guess that's some level of hardwork for sure. It takes time for those things to settle. Local business are harder to deal with as well.

I think there is a huge gap for the people who wish to learn those things. And it can be harder to get up and running and learn those stuff. I have found out that convincing power takes the most energy out of the sales jobs. So it can be beneficial on the point where we can sell it as a skill.

I think trying to convince people to buy your product or visit your website can seem a bit desperate. The better blueprint is to tell people what your product or site is about - hand them a business card and move on. Let your skills as a salesperson show by making a point, then hanging back to see if your message sunk in.

Sometimes, you can spend almost 20 minutes trying to talk a person into a sale. Other times, making a point about what your services are about in under 5 minutes - can be more effective. You're giving them key knowledge in a small window of time. Thus the decision is put into their hands a lot quicker. When that happens - they feel that you're the type of person who wants to get down to business. Instead of 'pitch to them' all day.

I think most of the ads and the influencer on instagram. You can see that companies can be difficult to handle on that front. You just have to think about things the right way. Handling it differently would be desperate. But I think convincing people is very much necessary. And we have to be understanding of that part.

Instagram is popular but I think its influencer base is overblown. It may be a better way to connect with celebs as an influencer - but most brands are still on twitter and Facebook.

I think instagram and few other social networks are slowly gaining in the momentum. As you can see these social networks have their pros and cons. We just have to learn how to handle them. It may not be easier other ways. I guess we have to spend a lot of time and gather the followers for this to work just like we do with offline marketing.

Of course. Social media followers will come automatically though once you've put in the necessary work. You'll receive upwards of 10 new ones a day by doing absolutely nothing - if you've worked hard enough to gain a following for many years.

Yes. Sometimes single day can earn that much. But most of the time follow 4 follow type are there. Otherwise getting genuine followers are a bit harder. And we have to work harder otherwise. It's kind of hard but it can work out. So that is something we should check out.

The follow for a follow crowd will be around once you get started initially. But eventually - people will follow you without requesting one back. That doesn't mean you shouldn't follow them though. Just be more discreet about it.

Well running a contest works wonders to gain followers. Especially if you're giving away stuff people really want. Even if you only choose 2 winners you should gain hundreds of new followers. Who'll stick around because they want to know when you'll be giving away more 'cool stuff.'

I agree. I think when you are doing offline marketing you have to put in a bit more effort or at least the type of effort would be different as you would have to dress up and make sure you are physically presentable and various other similar things as well whereas if you are just marketing online you can pretty much do it however you want as long as your online image is good. Regardless, I think the follow up which is the part where you convince people that they made the right choice in going with your business is also one of the more important things as it is what will make them come back the second time.

Yes when it comes to offline marketing. The physical presentation and the people approaching matters a lot. And that is what going to set the tone for the discussion too. So offline conversion is more or less on the conversion side some of the time. You have to learn that.

It can be a big business reaching out to offline business owners on the need to build up websites for them on the internet and on how that can help to keep their business moving. I've not had time to do that, but I know that it is something feasible at the end of the day.

Yes, I think people need to know about your business before they can by your services quite obviously. I think being as pro active as possible when it comes to business promotion. It can be the way to get the sort of contact that you are looking for, and will hopefully give you the recruitment you can use.

Yes, and not just publicize but actively promote your business, perhaps offer coupons, discounts, new customer specials etc. I think business cards are good, but only if thy really stand out. White business cards people don't notice so much. Also, too many of them get thrown away or shoved in a wallet never to see the light of day again.

That's very true about the way companies go about offline marketing. It's obvious that offline marketing isn't as tedious as online marketing. Once you have your money, you can ask to be advertised on media to any extent and this yields great output. Unlike online marketing, you don't have to sit down typing over and over again, trying to get some traffic to your brand, but just spend some few bucks on media adverts and results will start coming immediately.

Most big companies in this part of the world will easily pay to radio and TV stations to have their products advertised and the good part is that these stations now have experts that can bring the information in a convincing way.

I agree. When you market to companies offline, you need to be about, the personal touch. You need to approach them and tailor your proposal to their particular situation. I would recommend for this approach you use LinkedIn. You can get their contacts from there,andl allow them to also view your profile on LinkedIn . It will also allow you to get to know the company and what they do so that you can tailor, your proposal.

This is a great article for somebody like me because I do lack experience when it comes to offline marketing. I know plenty of things about the online aspect but offline is a whole new world like you've said.

There are some really good tips that I can put to use and I'd like to thank you. I just wonder how effective the handing flyers out method is? Does it still work? I remember that's what everybody did way before the internet days... flyers and business cards.

I agree. I think marketing to businesses and companies may be even a little bit easier or at least that's how I feel personally because I think companies are more open minded when it comes to doing business with others whereas when you are talking with consumers it's often just a one way street wherein they know they can just demand anything. Companies are usually more open in finding ways to benefit both sides of the transaction so it really is a good thing to learn how to best find ones that you can work with.

To be honest, I am at a loss on how to do offline marketing now. The most I see are the sales people distributing flyers in the streets and inside malls, they are selling condo units or resort vacation shares. With businesses now going online, I have to disagree that it is not difficult to market in the offline way. It is indeed difficult compared to online marketing since online marketing involves just pressing keys while offline marketing involves a big budget.

I think with more online options, it's harder to do it offline. Because people don't want to be sold on to. And that can be really hard to sale the products in such case. You can see that it can be really hard in such case to make any serious money in due process. It may be possible that offline marketing changes in near future. But for now it can be done with traditional options.

I don't think the argument is that the offline marketing is easier to do, but the fact that we should take up some of these tips in making it an enjoyable experience. Sure, the presence of the internet has made things easier, but we can't disregard what happens offline as well.

Companies find it so easier to market their products or services offline than online because it doesn't cost a lot of time and money like online marketing. You have to spend a lot of hours daily online posting contents for SEO results whereas this is not so while marketing offline. The most expensive marketing you can do for your business offline is the media marketing and this is still far lower than what you are expected to spend online.

Just be sure to space out your contests. A monthly contest can seem like a good thing. But at some point - your audience might become fatigued. Especially if you're giving away too many similar items. Spacing out the contests helps build intrigue, buzz and excitement within the follower base.

Offline doesn't suit advertising much if you don't have a lot of money, I'm afraid. I prefer to promote stuff on Instagram. I'm in love with Instagrams of my favorite artists and musicians. And it's a pretty good place to start a promotion campaign for your stuff, for example, if you're a tattoo master or a shirt designer. Unfortunately, not everybody has enough time to manage all this stuff by themselves; stuff like making good posts, gaining followers, etc. I have a good friend of mine who makes AWESOME shirt-designs, but she really struggled to promote herself through Instagram. Big time.So my final conclusion is that Instagram is the best way to express oneself artistically and also a good promotion site. Can't find a reason to hate this service.
