Continuing to write when you are sick

In my daily schedule for my online work, I cannot afford to be sick because no matter how small, I still regret to let the day pass without earning. Fortunately for me, my husband is willing to lend me a hand in times like that by typing for me. I would do the dictation and he would do the typing. Much more, he is good in grammar so it is like I am dictating to a software with grammar checker lol. Sometimes he even adds ideas although it is always for me to decide. Last month when I was in the hospital for 2 days, I continued working online thru our dictation method. One friend said that I seem to be addicted to my online work. It’s not really for the money but more for the financial discipline that I impose on myself. I hate to waste time by simply staying on the bed and not being productive. As long as my mind is still doing well that I can do the dictating then the only problem is the typing. How about you, how do you continue working when you are tied to the bed?

When I take a day off, I lose money Continuing to write when you are sick

Unfortunately, around 2 weeks ago I was sick and had to take some medication that made me drowsy. I would take the medication and then sleep for an additional 6 or 8 hours on top of the 8 I was already getting at night. Basically I was sleeping more than I was awake lol. For this time, I was not working much, but I was writing down everything that I needed to get done for when I didn't have to take the medication anymore.

I could have outsourced the work I had, but I wouldn't have made any money. Since I didn't have a time crunch, I could afford (sort of) to wait out the sickness and work on the projects when I was better. I do write everyday for my clients, and since I couldn't be online doing that, they weren't getting new content daily Continuing to write when you are sick I had a few phone calls asking why I wasn't producing, and luckily they were all understanding when I told them I had been sick and taking medication that makes me sleep more than a hibernating bear lol Continuing to write when you are sick

A trick I like to do when I'm sick and don't have the motivation to work, is I will try to brainstorm and work on my other ideas that don't take much out of me to do so. Sure, typing all day doesn't seem like it's very strenuous, but it gets tiring after you look at a computer screen for 8+ hours a day. So when I'm sick, it's even more tiring, and I get drained much quicker. To counteract this, I will expand on some of my R&D projects and do some research on them. It doesn't feel like work and most of the time I'm not even typing, I'm just thinking of how I can streamline a project or bring in sales for a new website that I plan on working on in 1 week, 3 months or even a year from now Continuing to write when you are sick I'm sick, but I'm still getting something done instead of just sitting on the couch with my chicken noodle soup and ginger ale lol Continuing to write when you are sick

In the end, it's up to you whether you want to work or not. I'm getting back into the swing of things now, after my illness, but I didn't feel defeated since I was technically getting stuff done each day. Sure, the work I was getting done won't help me until later on, maybe a year from now, but it will help eventually and I'll be happy I did the work back when I was sick instead of complain and blow my nose Continuing to write when you are sick

On the other hand, there are people out there who are hospitalized and can't work because they can't. I luckily haven't been in that situation, and I hope I never will be Continuing to write when you are sick

Your husband is a saint for picking up your work and getting it done even though he didn't understand it 100% Continuing to write when you are sick

For me I work all the time, and because I hardly fall sick so I'm always working but I believe even if I was to be sick I will still do my thing because I just like sharing my ideas,if I can still chat with friends even When sick then It almost the same thing I do at my job.So sickness cannot deter me from working unless it a life-threatening ailment which I hope never to go through but if not my job continues.

Considering the pace with which you say work is as if you (in this case, your body) had created some kind of adaptability. But you need to consider how sick you are, because in some cases it's totally impossible for you to work (however much you want, haha).

wow, you are a super man or woman! I couldn't even touch my smartphone not to mention my laptop when I am sick. I rather go into snooze mode to recover. It would take me several days to recover from cold. I am prone to cold and cough. Once I get back my feet to work online, I noticed that my earning had dropped drastically.

It's probably better to rest when you're sick - even a little sick, assuming you don't have to work, like say the boss won't give you time off. Anyway, plenty of rest and fluids will allow you to recover quickly and then you can get back to business. However, be sure to contact clients because deadlines can be massively important.

You're right on the path of contacting clients to update them on the current situation on ground. I always tell my clients that how things are going and whether I can still be able to deliver the job at the agreed time.

Yes, plenty of rest when you are sick better than forcing self to work and take a longer time to recover

I don't think that I'm going to take the risk of continuing writing when I am sick. One thing that I've come to realize in life is that we have to put health in order before thinking of working. One thing is that it is going to affect the working performance of the person.

No matter what the job is or whatever the situation... Health should never be put in the background because sometimes it may be too late to try to reverse a problem.

Of course there is a sense of frustration about not having to do the work on time or having to give up of it, but that is part of life after all, right? No one chooses to be sick.

I'm telling you, I think the poster was not really sick, she was just not feeling well at a low concentration of body functionality, because when you are sick you won't even think of typing talk more of dictating grammars though.
Sometimes, you will probably won't even have the strength to speak. And if you manage to type, your writing will be too bad, that your tenses won't even be put together.

With working online, you do not really get days off. Surely you could just go ahead and take a few days, but you will not earn any money. If you do freelancing online as a way to pay the bills, then you probably should not look forward to taking any days off, and look forward to working 24/7/365.

Whenever I am sick I try to work online just to pass the time and lay in bed while sick but sometimes I may feel too ill to do so. However, guilt sits in and I will just go online to get something done. I can not go a day without doing nothing, it feels like a wasted day. Another thing about working online full time is that a 'real' 9 to 5 day job will allow for sick leave, and may also offer benefits after working X amount of days.

Freelancing online you do not get that luxury and will most likely have to work and be sick in the process. It's basically a catch-22 type of situation. You're damned if you do, and damned if you don't (a saying meaning youre to blame whether its your fault or not).

So if you're working online as a full-time job by freelancing you already know the struggles. :/

I suffer from migraines and whenever I have migraines onset I can't really work. I can't even concentrate when I have migraines and I have to stay away from the computer as this only makes things worst for me. So when I am sick I have no choice but to postpone my online works. However I try to catch up on the following day by working extra hours.

I know how that is as I suffer from those as well, and it is not a thing I would wish upon my greatest enemies (if I had any). Whenever I have such migraines, all bets are OFF. The only thing I want to do is to sleep, and be in a VERY quiet room, and underneath a warm blanket. My migraines use to get so bad that I had to take a prescription on a daily basis. This prescription didn't react very well with my body and I stopped taking them. What I did do however was drink a LOT liquids and this seemed to really help my migraines. I do not believe I was drinking enough water which led to my migraines.

Well, I often just push through my sickness if I'm honest. Unless I catch a really, really bad cold or flu then I do all the writing myself. I just take more the breaks more often and prefer typing in bed. What I do is, set up the tablet and plug in my USB keyboard. That way it's really easy to type at almost exact same speed as I would on my computer.

I never really asked somebody else to write for me or told them what I want written and let them type it out.

It's good for you to have your husband helping you to write. If I am sick, I really can't work as there is no one else here to help me out. Moreover, I don't think I would like to think or talk much if I am sick, I would prefer to stay in bed and just rest.

When I gave birth to my youngest child, I thought I might have some time to work online while I was alone in the hospital and baby was sleeping. I also brought a book with me. My husband asked me to just rest, but not do anything else, as it helps me to recover faster. I agree with him that we should really take a break when we need to, but I can understand what you mean by wasting time not to work or earn.

At least your significant other is willing to help. Mine knows nothing about the internet, and doesn't care to learn anything about the internet either. Mine still thinks what I do online to earn some income is illegal. I just laugh at them, because they clearly dont know the inner workings of the internet. But they decided to take the stance of not learning so the jokes on them.

To be honest, I hate it when sickness affects any of my activities. Especially in regards to work. The beauty, however, of being a freelancer is that even though you have deadlines, you're pretty much on your own schedule. So there is a flexibility aspect that I do appreciate. At the same time, I dread a day going by without any earnings from my online work like yourself. Therefore, I respect the dictation method you've developed with your partner when you're not feeling the best. What I have come to realize though, is that sometimes it's best to take a day or two rest. In order to be at your optimal for your projects at hand.

Same here! To me, the worst thing is when I get so ill that I can't even work. Then you know that I'm feeling really, really bad. It makes me feel so unproductive though and stresses me out. I am used to working every day for years now.

It's hard for us freelancers because sometimes we have specific deadlines and the illness can postpone those.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JonathanS98
Personally, I think that's the worst feeling for me when sick; being unproductive. Because on normal days I have a constant schedule of productivity. Being ill slows me down more than 50% on my daily routine. Which is why I normally take the time to rest in order to heal as fast a possible.

I am thankful though because usually, I can shake a cold within a few days.

Well... Unless the deadline for delivery is knocking on my door (with incessant beats, haha), writing when I'm sick - considering how much sick I am, of course - this is something that I definitely don't do. After all, this is not something that will be worth it because health always has to come first... No matter what.

I wouldn't let being sick slow me down unless it was a major illness. Like the Flu or a very high fever for example. You can still write and earn with a cold of fever. Just break out the chicken soup, cough drops, hot tea and go to work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Everett
You sound like me, lol.

I definitely break out the hot tea, cough drops and soup. Some days I can work, and some days I refuse to because I feel like death. With a very basic cold, i can still work. However, when i had strep throat -- NOPE. Couldn't work, throat literally burned like it was on fire..

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Well yeah, strep throat I mean I wouldn't try or attempt to work if I had that. I'd be at the doctors office getting the necessary meds. That stuff is contagious. Better knock it out quickly. Colds and fevers can be done away with by simple household remedies, certain foods or drinks. Pharmacy stuff too. But strep throat is a trip to the doctor for a prescription.

When I'm sick, I black out. I become alien to every thing around me except food, even my phone and laptop becomes a tug of war and an eye sore to me. I won't even think about touching them, till I have recovered fully.
But it really depends on the level of the sickness, and for you to still have the strength to dictate and administer grammars, means your are not really sick, you are probably not feeling fine at a low tempo.

I am writing on one site everyday and posting articles. I have only not posted there during the sick days or when the internet connection does not allow. So you can see that I work hard and give the performance every single day. And you can see that sick days we have to hold some energy. Having content ready for the future days is another thing to handle the downtime. I have that approach and it works out for some of the time. It's worth to think about such sick days and write in advance.

I believe our ultimate goal should be to earn while sleeping or even we are sick. So we should not stop and be contented of writing for someone else to earn money.

It's good that you are so determined. Unfortunately, I am the exact opposite of you when I am truly sick and feel like I just cannot get out of bed. I will just be lazy for that whole day or even a few days and just not bother to do any work. It's good to hear that your husband helps you out with your internet work and it's great that he puts in some of his ideas as well which must give you some ideas for the future as well.

Sometimes I stop when I'm sick or feeling too lazy. I don't have that many responsibilities yet so I guess I can afford to more than others, but sometimes I am also feeling very good and wanting to work all day so I just catch up on those days and work off the days off I took. I know I'll have to work harder soon if I want to become more successful but for now I'm just enjoying my freedom a bit because sometimes I feel too stressed and unmotivated.

It's always hard to do things when you are sick and writing is no exception to this rule. It is good to have someone to help you when you are ill. However, it would probably be better to take the time to recover fully before you try to engage again so you can put all of yourself into your role.

Writing is a job you can still do even while you are ill so far the passion is there. It's such a task that can be performed even at the comfort of homes or bedrooms. So, health conditions may not stop you from doing it in as much as you only have to sit comfortably and write. The passion will simplify everything for you, but that wouldn't be real if the passion is not there. What you do with passion is what you make fun doing. Due to the health condition, you may just reduce the amount of time usually spent on the job to avoid stress.

Sick or not, I love working with my laptop on the bed. It's my most relaxing work position and the one where my creative juices are at their highest. If the work involves something as enjoyable as sharing something that one has enough stock knowledge of, that's not really work and certainly something that I can do in my sick bed. I am pleasantly surprised though that the OP now admits to taking his/her online work seriously as a source of income as he/she has consistently claimed in the past threads that his/her main purpose is to practice writing in English. That's just being practical and realistic, I suppose. Personally, I think that you and your spouse(?) has identical writing style and that your English skills is not far behind at all.

How do you continue working when you are tied to the bed... and sick?

I don't work. I stay in bed. I know myself. I am not a sickly type of person but when illness hits me, it's big time. So, I need to recuperate seriously as not to get worse.

Money isn't that important all the time. Your health is. Health is wealth.

I always skip writing when I am tired, fatigued or sick. I always take a rest, relax and do what is necessary for me to get better. I haven't set any goals that would require me to always be busy everyday. But if there is work available and it can wait, I will always finish it immediately I feel I have the strength to do it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You can possibly write even when you are sick. You just have to apply some strategies while doing that. You can be on bed and go on with your writing and you will never be able to continue earning if it is something you love doing at the comfort of your home. Writing is something like fun for some people while to many others, it's a very difficult task. So, one man's taste is another man's poison.

I see what you mean. This is especially true when your main source of income is from online freelancing. I work everyday including Sundays no matter how tired I am, I always find a way to fit my work in. When I am sick I take a break. When I am sick I find myself very unproductive,so there is no use of me forcing myself to work, it takes longer for me to do the work and it doesn't turn out very well. I wait until I am recovered for me to start working again.
