What are the risks of using a fake name on Facebook?

I don't really want to use my real name on Facebook. I don't want my family to know who I'm talking to there. Is there a way to just use a fake name on Facebook so they don't find my Facebook account and try to add me? And, are there any risks in doing so?

Some accounts get banned on Facebook due to using a fake name. If there is a security issue that would cause you not to want to use your real name, you should email Facebook and explain the situation. Tell the staff why you can't use your real name. This will be important to document just in case there is a dispute over your choice of names.

If Facebook locks your account for security reasons, they would ask you to upload an ID that shows your real name. If your real name and Facebook name are the same, your account would be unlocked.

If you are using a fake name on Facebook, there would be no way to prove the account is yours as there is no documentation to support that fake name. That is one of the risks as you would lose that account.

You can use any name you want on Facebook. Just don't put too much into the Facebook account. Just use the account for chatting by PM with friends and playing Facebook games. But, don't actually store priceless photos on your account. In that way, if your account is taken away by Facebook, you won't be losing anything of value.

Facebook will allow you to use nicknames such as first or middle name variation of your real name. For instance, Hank for Henry.

You can also list an additional name, such as maiden name or professional name.

You can find out more about that here.

As suggested before, using a fake name or pretending to be anyone else on Facebook can result in consequences including ban. Some people will get away with it. But not everyone. If you do this, then you accept the risks involved.

Facebook has always had a policy of requiring users to supply their real name on the site. Enforcement has been lax, but there's still a risk of getting caught. ..

If your account gets locked, you will be required to upload photo id to get your account restored. If you are using fake name, you can't provide photo id proof.

It seems that every Tom, Dick, and Harry are using fake names. And I find it funny when someone would spell their real name backward like Tom Cruz, the profile name would be Mot Zurc. That just goes to show that the name in the Facebook account is not material because it can be changed and most are changing their profile name once in a while. But to be honest, my Facebook name is my real name because that is my connection to my circle.
