Tips For Choosing Keywords To Target!

Building links to your website is an important part of your search engine optimization.
Choosing the Keywords / Keyphrases to target and use as the Anchor Text for these backlinks is also important.
Have a read at the tips below I have put together to help you out..

  • Finding Search Volume: Use the Google Keyword Planner to get Search Volumes for the Keywords / Phrases you are thinking of using. Be sure to check both the Global Searches for them as well as the Local Searches too. Wrap each search term you check with [These] to be sure you get the exact search volume for that Keyword / Phrase. Do not pay any attention to the "Competition" column as this is for when choosing Keywords to target on their Advertising (Google Adwords) System, it is Not a measure of the competition for people targeting the keywords to link build and improve their search engine rankings. • Short & Popular vs Less-Common & Long-Tail: You can choose to target very Popular Search Terms, or you can choose to target the Less Used Search Terms. Both will get you results providing you use the correct link building SEO methods, but I will tell you some differences between targeting each of them. Firstly, Popular, Very Common Keywords / Phrases, some examples: "Promotion", "Link Building", "Advertising", these sort of search terms get loads of searches per month both globally and locally, but don't let this fool you and make you think, well I will get a lot of people visiting my website through it because it is used a lot, no, this just means a lot are searching, but most of the people searching will click on the first ranking website, then some more on the second, third, etc.. Knowing these get a lot of searches means you know a lot of people will be targeting them too, so are you really going to get first, second, third spot? You may have very good link building and other SEO methods or have a lot of money to pay others to better your rankings in your keywords, so if you want, go for it and target those. ... As for Less Common / Less Searched For keywords / phrases, these are most often longer, containing more words and/or less known / used words, the longer ones also known as "Long-Tail Keywords / Phrases", these do get less searches per month, but picking up on my earlier point, these are easier to rank higher on as they are less targeted as they are less used. Now it is not as simple as choosing less known search terms and hey, you will rank top, but this is just a tip about not always going for the best, most used / popular ones Can bring you just as good or better results. Tips For Choosing Keywords To Target!

  • Amount & Variety: Don't just choose one or two keywords to target, search engines like to see a good variety, don't choose too many either so that your targeting and link building efforts are spread very thin across them all. I suggest you choose 3 or 4 main ones to target per page of your website and another 5 or 6 per page too, these should be a variety of different search terms not too similar. For example, I wouldn't suggest targeting "Link Building", "Link Build" & "Build Links", as an alternative to these I would choose "Link Building", "SEO Backlinks", "Build Links For My Website".

  • Think ahead: You are starting your link building and SEO work today or whenever you finish choosing your keywords, so depending on what type of website your are promotion, will your keywords be relevant and as used by the time your SEO work / results start to kick in? Remember, SEO isn't an overnight job and things take time and so does your website to rank. For example, right now it is Feb 2014, currently everyone is taking about "Dancing On Ice" (a TV Show), but they wont be next month when that's all over and the next show is on, so if you run a TV Show Website, and your wanting to start targeting new keywords today, knowing it will take some time for ranking well to kick in, do you think people will still be searching as much for that then? But instead, you could target lets say "Big Brother 2014" as this show starts in 2 months or so time, so providing I start my targeting campaign today (and do it correct / good), betime the show starts and the searches are at their highest, I will be ranking well and the best time for that keyphrase. This tip doesn't really apply to those targeting keywords that the time of year, etc.. doesn't effect them, although the time of year can effect search volume on most terms. A quick note:
Do not pay any attention to the "Competition"

When your main income of a website are Adsense ads and you are targeting very specific niche and competition is low, you might get many not very related ads on it, this means lower CTR and CPC as well.

I had read in one discussion about the short and popular versus the long and less common keywords. There is a balance between the 2 and you cannot say that the short is more effective than the long. In other words, they both have their own qualities regarding the search engines and the search results. But for me, the shorter keyword is better because it is not easy to think of a unique keyword.
