I like reading suspenseful gothic stories, that have a spooky or atmospheric tone to them. Often my own stories will have a supernatural feel, as if dealing with the afterlife type aspects. These are not based on mystery but sometimes there will be a mysterious element surrounding how a person has died. I think this mysterious element causes great suspense and wraps the reader into the story even more.

Delayed gratification is a big deal in suspense and murder mysteries. You have to delay the big event long enough and string the reader along while keeping them tantalized with a few clues here and there. Don't forget that the most obvious suspect will be the person who is there all the time, right under your nose, the one there from page one even. The reader never sees it. Growing up, I was a huge fan of Agatha Christie novels-especially Hercule Piorot and Miss Marple muder mysteries. These way old timey books still hold an appeal for me. Back then, my mom would always read these books to us after school while we sat in the livingroom doing our homework. Some of my fondest childhood memories. I have friends who are story writers. Most of them are in science fiction and fantasy but there are also some who writes suspense and horror. From what I know, they are ghost writing for some bloggers and magazines as well. Yes, I consider them professional writers but they are amenable to the project especially if they like the suggested plot. Maybe I can connect you with some of them if you are interested.
