What will you do when forum members disagree with you?

As with any community, there will be times when a popular or senior forum member won't agree with your decisions, such as whom to promote or direction for your forum. What will you do when this member makes a big spectacle of your decisions, asking other members to take their side or making public posts about what you have done?

The forum belongs to you, so really you should do what you want and what you think is best for your forum.

There should be room on a forum for debate and difference of opinion. And, you can't penalize everyone who doesn't agree with you. However, that doesn't mean you should tolerate insurrection or trolling by members of the forum. Deal with the issue privately, issue warnings if you must. Let the members know their input is welcome but only if offered in a creative way.

Open up a forum poll before making major decisions to ask opinions, but make it clear to everyone that final decision will be yours. And, this should give everyone on forum a chance to voice gripes or concerns over the upcoming changes.

No one can complain if they've had adequate time to give input but refused to speak up about impending changes to the forum. Also, some of your best ideas for change could come from this type of open discussion.

There are some things which are really no business of your forum members, such as whom you decide to appoint to staff positions. These things are not up for debate and if some people disagree with you, then that's how it is. You can't change your opinion just because one or two people want it.

I think that is out of line for a member to dispute the decision of the forum's owner. It is just like being welcomed in the home and you have the temerity to quarrel with your host. But if that happens then I guess it is time to be tactful. Maybe a message about the issue would resolve the matter. But if that offending member would insist on his opinion against the owner's decision then I guess it is time to use the axe.
