How long between forum posts?

How long do you require a person to wait between forum posts? And, does a waiting period help deter spammers?

I think it use to in 1999. Now spam bots just see the wait flag and wait. Haha

I usually put 10 seconds. I think default is 30 on many forum software platforms.

If someone is determined to spam, they will simply wait the required time and spam post anyway, rather than actually posting better quality content.

Doesn't really matter how long you make them wait, a spam bot will simply wait and spam away. There are much better ways to stop spam on a forum including an active forum staff with mods that come by daily to clean up spam or delete spam users.

Making forum members wait awhile between posts could lead to more high quality posts. If they know they won't be able to post a quick response, (right after the previous one), they are less likely to do so and might put more effort into each post.

I agree that giving time for the poster to write his post will lead to a higher quality. However there are writers who are very enthusiastic with issues that they tend to lose their enthusiasm when their post is not accepted at once. But for me, I would rather wait for at least 2 minutes to at least give myself ample time to understand the topic and think of a good reply. Although I have to admit that I sometimes post quickly and that is due to excitement and not really because I was hurrying.

I agree with Dayton. No matter what you have on your site a bot will do what they want to do and find a way around it no matter what.

10 seconds, no more than 30 seconds though.

10 seconds seems legit to me.

If you wait too long though it is very annoying, or at least I find that it is.

Most times, it takes me longer than a minute to write a forum post anyway, so I don't really notice if a time restriction is in place. And, even for shorter responses, I'm still browsing the forum for a few minutes afterward looking for an interesting discussion to contribute to.
