Because you have done something wrong against google. This is because google panda and hummingbird effect.Check that if you are blacklisted by google from online blacklist checking tools. You can get your site to 1st easily by fixing the error.Mainly duplicate content and low quality backlinks causes that.

Do you think that the backlinks have violated a Google policy? Maybe there is a violation if those links were paid and the person who spread the backlinks was not a person but a bot. That’s my take on that. However, there is a reason for the dwindling backlinks when the site would be deleting such. I have read one discussion that says some forums have the habit of deleting backlinks that they don’t approve of and that also goes with popular blogs.

This is actually not uncommon, and depending on your situation, may or may not be a cause for alarm
The explanation for the drop you are seeing could be one or a combination of several things. For example, it could be that you paid for garbage links that are ?expiring. It could be that you had a news story break or a press release that got a lot of short term attention and now it's naturally dropping off. It could be that you are being hit by an algorithm change. I would audit the links that you are losing to see if they have something in common
