What You Can Learn From Your Competitors

In order to eventually outrank them in the search engine results pages, you need to know what your competitors are doing, what they did and if possible what they are also planning to do so you can obtain valuable information that could get you the success you seek.

What should interest you:

1. Monetization

Assuming that the sites that interest you make money for the owners then they have to be doing something right. Try to find out how they make money. Is it from ads? Affiliate sales? Selling ad space directly on the site? 

Apply what you learn.

2. Traffic

Where do your competitors get most of their traffic from? Search engines? Social media or elsewhere?

You'll need to focus on that specific area first but diversifying your traffic sources will work to your advantage too. 

Backlinks

For SEO you'll need quality backlinks. It will be easier for you to know where your content can be published if you already know that someone in your niche had their article published on that site. This way you'll also be reaching your competitor's audience in the process. Depending on the quality of your content, you could get them to visit your blog regularly.

I agree with all the three points shared. Actually, these are the most important factors that any successful blogger has worked on so much.

Apart from the above points, I also check the keywords used by my competitors, and how the competitor is playing around with the words when it comes to common topics. The writing style of your competitor is also something you can borrow.

I have been reading about the keywords of the competitors that you have to check and probably evaluate on how to beat it. First question is this – how do you know your competitors, is it by the search list that they are ranked near your position that they may be ahead or behind your ranking? I wonder how much traffic you will get with that keyword based on the competitor’s keyword compared to the traffic you get when you just think of the best keyword.

I am glad that the first thing that you mentioned is monetization. Sweet, that a site is commanding a higher traffic is never enough. There is need for the website to be generating money for the owners as well since that is all that matters as long as having a site is all that matters.

I think it’s always important to take note of your competitors. After all, you are dealing with them directly and they are who you’re up against when it comes to making sales or gaining more web traffic.

Finding out how they do things - like monetization - can be huge for gaining more money from your site yourself!

Yes, that's true. One can learn a lot from his competitors and use it to his own benefit. If your competitor is more successful than you then it is very essential to know where you are going wrong and what are the right things that your competitor is doing. If you fail to do this exercise then it will definitely benefit your competitor and he will surge ahead of you in the competition and leave you far behind.

It would be interesting to study the weaknesses of your competitors but that knowledge probably wouldn't help you outrank them or divert some of their traffic to your site.

What you ought to focus on is what they do well. Try to do it better and I'm sure you'll outrank them eventually.

Back before I learned to do anything I use to get inspiration from my competitors website design. This was way back when I did not know how to create website templates or did not even know what exactly HTML or CSS was at the time.

By learning HTML and CSS from competitors websites, it helped me grow and learn to code other languages (well HTML/CSS is not really a programming language but still).

I think it is fairly okay to learn from your competitors but just do not ever copy them. Be unique and original. No one wants to be copied, so keep this in mind.

You can learn to be strong and to be strategic with your competitors. Because what your competitors are thinking is to make you or your business down, it's like a battle of the fittest, so you need to be strategic and mindful for you to get rid of getting down.

I'm not sure i'm a fan of spying on your competitors. You need to have a rough idea of what they are doing, but basically need to keep it original. I think if you concentrate too much and what they're doing you run the risk of being left behind, even the risk of killing your own innovation. I don't think you want to build your business around your competitors. Build your business around your own original ideas. I think you need to be very careful about this.

There was a time Technorati was the best blog directory. They just didn't list blogs in their directory, they also ranked them. I don't know what criteria they used but in this blog directory you would find most of the sites that you had to compete against.

For research purposes it would be a great resource because in addition to everything else (including the traffic you'd get from the site), you would know how your blog fared popularity-wise when compared against other blogs in the same niche.

Something like this could at the very least motivate bloggers to work harder for the traffic that will come your way when you outrank your competitors.

I agree, other than time and insights, monitoring your competitors can really prevent you to waste tons of cash in the end. If you befriend that competitor then you can probably learn the style of his SEO or the way he conducts his business. Other than befriending him, you can do some spying to check on his keywords and the frequency of his new contents. In other words, you can learn from your competitors on how they gained success.

Take for instance one competitor that is getting the most amount of traffic. If you befriend that competitor then you can probably learn the style of his SEO or the way the conducts his business.

And not just that.

I've heard that the easiest way to befriend someone is by following them on social media. When they post content which you are certain will interest your social media connections, share it. The traffic you send to their site will grab their attention. They might want to find out more about you and eventually they'll share your content too.

I think that we can learn a lot from our competitors, we can adopt their strategy on how to earn more profit and we can also improve it to become more interesting.Sometimes competitors give us the motivation to work hard on our business since we don't want to late in terms of profit and innovation. We really find ways on how we can compete with our competitors in a fair and just manner.

What you can learn from your competitors: In doing business(selling goods/services), there is always a competitions. You should learn how to play/compete them fairly. You should try something new in your business to attract more and more costumers such as good services at low price.

Nice text. Yeah a agree with you, you really can beat your competitors by knowing their weaknesses and strengths. But you have to know hove to use that information against them and that's the key.
