Why backlinks are a staple of Googles diet when it comes to search engine rankings

A lot of people are saying that SEO is dead, and that's mainly because they're stuck in the mindset from 5 years ago when we could build a bunch of backlinks with SEO software and rank for what we wanted. SEO is evolving but the need for backlinks is still there, we just need to focus on higher quality links than what SEO software can produce. Think of backlinking and SEO as a popularity contest, the more people who give you their vote, the more likely you'll be prom king and rank atop the search engines results pages lol

You will never rank without backlinks, I've actually tried and it's not possible, so by getting only high-quality backlinks and feeding the search engine algorithms a healthy diet for them, you will increase your rankings over time and see a much more stable ranking compared to if you were to blast thousands of "high-quality" links at your pages lol.

Backlinks are like votes but ranked according to popularity
Just like I mentioned above, each backlink is like a vote into a ballot box to see who becomes president or prom king. The person with the most votes usually wins, but with SEO it's not quite the same, each backlink carries it's own score in the eyes of the search engines. The only thing that drives a lot of people crazy when it comes to backlinks is that you can't build 1,000 low-quality links and have it equal 10 or even 1 high-quality link. The values of these links can't be scaled up in a way that if you build a lot of low-quality ones you will eventually overthrow the websites only getting backlinks from websites like entrepreneur.com and forbes.com lol

Getting 1,000 low-quality links will mean you're just a low-quality website. Getting 1,000 high quality links over time will show the search engines that you're not some garbage website and you should be atop the search engine rankings like the king you are You could even get 10 high-quality links and reign over any website within your niche that has 1,000,000 low-quality links, it just depends on how good your links are and if they're niche related.

Google needs to see people talking about you
When the spiders set out to find new content, they tend to crawl through backlinks in order to find new pages or websites that have yet to be indexed within their own SERPs. A dofollow backlink will tell the search engine spider to go through the link to see what's on the other side, and that's how they find your website.

The more backlinks they find online, the more they see people talking about you, and the better your rankings will be because of it. This is why people target dofollow links that are publicly viewable and not stuck behind a login page. Of course, you'll still need some nofollow links to make your backlink profile look more natural, but that's going to happen regardless of what you do

If you boil down everything with SEO, you get backlinks
If you remove all the fluff and marketing it will all come down to some sort of mention or backlink to your website. You're trying to place a link on a 3rd party website in order to get traffic to your own and the spiders will crawl through that link and see your website as well.

No matter what we do, backlinks will be a part of the staple diet that Google is eating every single day. Once business and website mention become more prevalent in the search engine algorithms for ranking a website, there will be fewer backlinks out there, but people will still place them to get actual users through to their pages in order to make a sale. And this means backlinks aren't going away anytime soon.

SEO isn't a dead art, it's just evolving, but you'll still need backlinks
Everyone is moving away from backlinks because of how much people are saying you don't really need them anymore, but that's just being said by the people who don't know what the hell they're talking about lol Backlinks will be here for a long time, at least until Matt Cutts says they're not relevant anymore, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

A quality backlink is a vote, a notch in the belt, an award, or anything else you can think of that's good. They will always help your website, even if the algorithms change to focus more on something else, so you should always be building them.

In conclusion
Even if the algorithms change to rule out any sort of backlink and it's value, you should still be focusing on them now in order to build your authority in the eyes of Google and bring in traffic. Not focusing on backlinks means you just don't want traffic or you're too stubborn to listen to other people who say you will always need them in order to rank. If you don't want to build backlinks, I hope you have another stable business making you money, because the website you're neglecting won't be funding anything of yours in the future lol

And rightfully so. As we all know, there are plenty of shady ways of gaining popularity and “working your way up in the ranks” when it comes to SEO and climbing the search engine ladder. If these shady means actually worked, then Google would be an unreliable mess and not the valuable resource that it is today.

It’s kind of a harsh way to put it, but if you’re a low quality site trying to gain popularity by low quality means, then you’ve earned your low quality rank. Only top quality effort and networking deserves to be rewarded.

Quantity of backlinks do not add value to your website, quality backlinks do. Quality backlinks means you are generating backlinks from high authority sites and the sites that are related to your own site. For instance, if you generate backlinks to your travel website from gaming website, it does not add value. Automated backlinks ot using bots to generate backlinks also do not add any value.

From what I have been reading about quality backlinks that example of 1,000 versus 10 backlinks is what’s on my mind. Why bother in posting a thousand backlinks to small sites when you can post 10 backlinks on quality sites? That is actually a good advice that I remember from the other discussions that I have encountered. But the problem now is how to determine the high quality sites where to post the backlinks.

I think some of the backlinks need to be niche to your website. Generic backlinks only help to get the page or website indexed. For the page to have some weight, I think google has started to make use of the niche backlinks. So people need to have proper backlinks. This way they can consider the backlinks to be making more sense. So in near future I think backlinks with proper page themselves will bhave weight too.

Yes, I have created backlinks on websites within my niche and I have seen good results. A lot of people still create thousands of spammy backlinks and then wonder why their positions have drastically dropped in the SERPs.

Yes most of those public web 2.0 websites and the blogs. Those links don't help much. At the most some forum links may help. That is only in case if you want to drive some traffic. But apart from that I don't think there seems to be much value out of the links of that type.

So, and you are talking to a novice here, it is better to try to get just a few really superior backlinks rather than just get any old backlink. What I want to know now is exactly how you would tell if a blog or webpage is one of these superior places? I am sure everyone else knows this, but it would be interesting for me to understand things a bit more than I do. I post on a popular chat site which gets a lot of traffic, but would that alone make it a good backlink? I am probably misunderstanding the whole thing. If i was a cook making a cooking blog (I a not,) would the thing to do to be to aim to get a backlink from a cooking show host?

Search engines rank websites based on the quality of the content that is posted on that site. Wikipedia for example is a considered by search engines a reliable source of information and for that reason will always be on page #1 of the SERPs.

What I want to know now is exactly how you would tell if a blog or webpage is one of these superior places?

When building backlinks there are tools which one can use to determine how well sites perform in such. If a site ranks higher in the search engine results pages then the search engines believe it is a superior place.

According to wikipedia:

The domain authority of a website describes its relevance for a specific subject area or industry. This relevance has a direct impact on its ranking by search engines

That I believe is what you should look for when trying to build your backlinks. If a site in your niche ranks high in the search then that's where your backlinks should be. There are SEO tools that can do all this (hard work) for you.

The more quality backlinks, the more chances of getting more traffic, backlinks has a direct effect on traffic plain and simple and that means more backlinks = more concersions. Don't just post your links anywhere, because doing that can harm you. Just stick to quality sites and you'll be okay.

Yes but the content has to be good enough to get linked. Otherwise google won't be much paying attention either. They have human reviewers for the website. So they do see which of those are affecting search ranking at the top.

Well, everything depends on who was contracted to help create backlinks for your friend - the site owner. If someone who doesn't have good knowledge of how to create quality backlinks was given the job, the individual will definitely make a mess of the whole job and some poor backlinks invite spams into your site.

I have noticed that the better thing that matters to search engines is the way that real people will try to discuss about the things that you are doing. I am still quite confused with backlinks although my understanding is better now than a week ago. I am focusing on how to create quality backlinks because I find ordinary backlinks as not that effective when it comes to SEO. However posting on authority sites is not easy and there is a tendency to waste time especially when it is a huge forum that prohibits signatures.

Sharing the link to your website here, there, everywhere does not help you in terms of getting quality backlinks. backlinks are effective only if they are generated from relevant sites and the sites with higher ranking. Furthermore, you should also get dofollow backlinks, Nofollow backlinks do not add any value. Most of the authority sites do not give you dofollow backlinks. While generating backlinks you should tae care of this issue.
