Social media and business, what you need to ask yourself in order to be successful

Everyone knows they need to be active on social media if they're going to be as successful as possible online.  No company can solely be successful with just SEO or PPC campaigns in place, you can definitely get a lot of traffic, but you will always need social platforms in order to be as successful as possible.

You need Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, SnapChat, YouTube, etc. if you want to be successful online.  You may not need all of these platforms, but hitting a few hard will never hurt your profits in the long run.  You can build a dedicated following with just one platform, so hitting 3 of the bigger ones can triple your followers, and will likely boost your profits enough so you can target more platforms and keep going Social media and business, what you need to ask yourself in order to be successful

Below are 8 questions you need to ask yourself before you get into social media marketing, and they are:

Question 1: Why does your business even exist?
If you don't know why your business exists, you likely don't know what you're supposed to sell or write about.  Now, if you do know why your business exists, you likely know who you should be targeting, what you should be talking to them about, what they would prefer to read or purchase, and how to convert them into a sale.

Question 2: How did you get started?
People will buy your products or services for various reasons, but they will always be encouraged to purchase from you if they can see where you came from.  A lot of major companies around the world will have their journey typed out on their "About Us" page for everyone to see.  They might even make a few videos and show where they came from to where they are now, and that will always increase your sales because you are now inviting people into your past and see you through your journey.  They will begin to trust you more because you're opening up, and we all know that trust can increase your sales, so figure out where you came from and let people know Social media and business, what you need to ask yourself in order to be successful

Question 3: How do you measure your success?
Are you measuring how many likes you get per post, how many sales you're getting, what your net profits are, how many recurring buyers you're getting, or all of the above?  If you don't know what you're supposed to measure, you won't know if your social media campaigns are actually working.

With email marketing, someone needs to see you in their inbox an average of 6 times before they actually make a purchasing decision, and the same goes for social media marketing.  If you can get noticed more by people, they will be more willing to purchase, so stay active and know what types of metrics you want to measure in order to see if your campaigns are successful Social media and business, what you need to ask yourself in order to be successful

Question 4: What do you sell online?
Dive deep into what you're actually selling and understand how your customers are viewing them.  You may need to edit your images or your descriptions in order to please more of your targeted demographics, but this means you need beta testers or just step into their shoes and see what they see.  If you can do this, you will be able to push it through social media and watch the traffic roll in.

Question 5: Are you aware of what is happening within your industry?
The industry around you will essentially be your greatest teacher because people will react to new product launches and services of your competitors and that's what you need to watch.  If you can monitor what they're doing, and how the customers and community is responding, you'll know what you should be doing.  You won't have to worry about launching a new product and promoting it on social media just to be ripped apart by the community because they hate it.  Let your competitors be the first through the wall, while you play it safe, and always know what will work and what won't before you even think about posting.

Question 6: Who are you trying to bring into your website?
Know who you want to target before you start any sort of social media campaign.  If you aren't sure who you should be targeting, and you just start posting or advertising through Facebook or another platform, you could likely be wasting your money on visitors who won't convert into a sale or subscriber.  If you do your research, you'll know who to target, and that will save you money as well as bring in more profits along the way.

Question 7: How many competitors do you have, and can you beat them?
It's inevitable, you'll have competition, but can you beat them at their own game?  So many times I've seen people start up a website and then complain because they can't beat their competitors, but it's usually because they're copying them word for word and expecting the same results.  Be unique and the community will see you as another authority, and they will flock to you just like they did you, competitors.

Question 8: Can you sum up your branding strategy in a couple of sentences?
If it takes you a few paragraphs to write up your branding strategy, it's likely too complicated right now and needs to be reworked.  Yes, a detailed branding strategy will likely be a few pages of content, but you need to focus on the Now and not the Later because you're just starting off.  Know what needs to be done first, focus on those few tasks, then start evolving your branding campaign off of the initial results you've gotten.

In conclusion
Social media, SEO, Branding, Marketing, and Sales are 4 different beasts that need to be tamed if you want to be successful online.  All of them take time, and all of them require dedicated work, but if you go into social media without knowing the answers to the 8 questions above, you'll be lost and likely waste a bit of money before you realize the direction you should be going in.  Play it safe, understand what you're doing before you do it, and profit more in the long term Social media and business, what you need to ask yourself in order to be successful

The pointers you mentioned here by means of questions are well supported of reasons why we need to know the answers before we dive in. These are the things that require deep thought process as you mentioned yourself to play it safe because there's a risk involved that we will just waste money if we are not anchored with the basic things we need to be certain about. Among the things you mentioned are the purpose of the business, our target market, and the stiff competition which are all essential. I've also seen some businesses who shared their business journey and in doing so it creates confidence in them.

When you fail to have these information on the purpose of the business, the target market and how to reach the desired clients, and the stiff competition that comes from other dealers in the industry for the prospective customers, then your online business is already dead on arrival because there is no way of getting past the first phase of the business. Information is power and it should be taken very seriously when setting up a new business.

Correct my friend. When you are not truly connected to the business you will rarely enhance its growth. The questions are important and the first four are practical even more at the initial stages of any business.

I agree this questions really need a lot of thinking before answering it. You should be really certain about your answers and goals. You will be avoiding loss if you really know this basic things because they are the foundation of your business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
These are very important questions to ask, however, some questions do not have an exact answer. For instance, you might ask yourself how many competitors you have and can you beat them? You will never find the answer. If you opened an online store selling various items, your competitors are ebay, amazon, alibaba, aliexpress, zazzle, etsy. These are big companies you can never beat them. Yet, they are your competitors because people will always choose these companies and might never trust yours. Your competitors are also the lesser know stores that you may have never heard of.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
I agree that we cannot really ascertain the exact figure of how many competitors we have nor a rough estimate. The closest answer that you can get perhaps is how stiff the competition is or how high the demand is for a certain product or service is. Perhaps what is really being asked is how can you fare or defeat your competitors.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
It is true that it is difficult to know everything about your competitor. However, this does not mean you should not research on your competitor. You should try to find about how your competitors performing on search results, how they are marketing their businesses, how much they are charging for the products that you are also selling etc. If you know the tactics your competitors are using, you can easily outsmart your competitors.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
I agree. Knowing your competitors will help you know your advantages and disadvantages. You can maximize on your advantages and try to eliminate the disadvantages to give you the upper hand in the competition. You can also learn from them and apply some of their tactics on your own.

In order to be successful, you need to do your business in a successful way. Every aspect including the social media must successful. Being successful I believe is hitting your target.

HItting your target is really important. I am actually impressed that Seocheckout is showing in my news feed on my FB account even if I did not provide my details. It really does have a way to reach its target and that can be advantageous for the business.

I think the target market is the most essential part in the evaluation of your marketing plan. Social media is one fertile place to do your marketing but you need to have a good discretion and disposition on how to identify the market. You cannot just post on your timeline about your business. My best bet is for you to create a Facebook Group with the same niche or related to the niche of your business. Members of that group will be your captive market.

All I can say when people want to get into business and dive in to social media as well to market their business to more people is to have a great self confidence and make your self strong to any possible risks that you may encounter. Your personality towards what you do is also a necessary consideration in order for you to be able to achieve your main goals and go on the right track. But all of the important ideas in your article are really cool and a reminder to be acted, or some reminders/suggestions that you and we need to think of.

There is no way one can take off or exclude the use of social media in one's business especially when such business is to be carried out and managed online. What is the best medium to promote and market ones online business products and services that is not through the social media sites? So, the social media are core to the success of any online business.

Completely agree. Social media has become the best asset in business. I have to be honest, I was somehow reluctant to use them in the beginning, I guess it was because all the fear about not knowing how to use them in a proper way, but it has turned out great. I can't deny, there's a lot to face while on social media, but it will bring a lot of benefits too.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think that social media sites are interrelated with one another, business needs social media sites for them have a place to advertise or sell their product and services. Social media sites have a lot of uses not just for leisure of information purposes but as well for business which is now one of the trend in the market.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
That's the best platform. I can't think of anything else which comes close. People have to put in some information before you can send them emails if this is another option. Most people would find it uncomfortable if not intrusive. I agree that there's no way you can take social media out of the picture.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
Yes, you're absolutely right about how important social media sites in promoting a business or anything. But it is just you should also be good enough to market it so the opportunity won't be wasted, and I just read someone also said that social media sites can never be taken lightly which is also definitely true.

You can use social media for your offline business as well as online business. Recently, I was checking facebook and I saw an ad of the bank that happens to be across the street from my apartment. The bank that does not even support online banking is promoting the service through online means. The ad was so powerful that the other day I walked in to the bank. This is the power of social media. The ad was targeted towards the people who might be the potential customer. The ad reached me because it was targeted well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
Good to hear that. That's one good example of the advantages when it comes to the benefits of social media sites now a days for the business. It is not only helpful with the businessmen but also helpful to some people who are looking for their needs or anything they need in everyday life. Social media is really powerful.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
Another major benefits of social media advertising is advertising cost. You need a lot of money to advertise on newspaper, but you can advertise on social media with a small money. For instance, you can start a good ad campaign with just $15, however, you will need at least $150 for a newspaper ad.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
It only goes to show how powerful social media is even with offline businesses. It's also important that it has the system to target specific people or potential customers because quantity doesn't really help much if they're not likely to avail of the products or services. Facebook is one of the most influential and widely used Social media and the bank did see that potential and took advantage of it. That's one good example you've shared.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Sometimes, you really only need confidence to market yourself. When other people see you very confident about your company or product, they will be convince to buy your product or service. Your confidence to your product can make the customer to believe that it will be worth it and their money will not be wasted when they purchased it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
You are very correct my friend with that assertion on having the confidence to market your business products and services online by yourself and once the prospective customers are satisfied with your business promotion, they are most likely going to pick interest on what you offer and patronize you. But you should put into consideration how good your products are because any sign of flaw would be detrimental to your business success.

Attitude really goes a long way as compared to knowledge alone. It's inevitable that we'll encounter risks and lots of decision making and innovation. What he's given are ideas. It will still depend on the person how they will be applied.

You know there is actually a great quote I love which states the importance of the founder in any business. Only them have the deep enthusiasm for the idea and hence they are the people who push the company forward at all times and especially in times of hardships. Someone might even still your idea but they will never steal the enthusiasm and motivation you have to do it.

I think having a clear cut idea of what your business does and what other businesses in the industry also do is key to having a successful social media platform. I think without those your social media posts can end up pretty directionless and that really defeats the purpose of creating a brand on those channels, in my opinion!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Basically, I was told that before joining any business, I would have to conduct a detailed analysis and research on the business strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). By having such information, there will less room for any kind of surprises in managing such business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Yup, I think the SWOT procedure is an "oldie but a goodie" - it's so important to understand what your own strengths and weaknesses are, and any external opportunities and threats. Once you've established those things it's a lot easier to set goals and also to set yourself up for success!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Exactly! SWOT analysis have been invogue for a very long time now and it's still as useful as any other business tool and strategy that would help you get the best out of any new or old business proposition that one wishes to venture into. Without carrying out the SWOT analysis, you leave your business open to failure.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It basically implies that we need to be ready into the obstacles that we need to pass through to attain success. To have a top notch product means having a planned smooth platform that will make your chosen procust into the top and willsurpass your comperitors because of the demand of the product that you are marketting. We need to choose a product that has a BIG MARKET into it to have a lot of future prospects that will help us to reach success. That's all!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Exactly! Every business both online and offline business comes with risk and challenges, there is nothing like a smooth hitch free business on 100% daily running of the business. Trials and challenges are guaranteed in every business, so planning and being prepared to tackle such issues is the only way to prevent such problems from taking your business down.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I have online business as well as offline business. I have spend more on offline business than online business. I even acquired bank loan for offline business. However, my offline business is not going good. There is a risk on both types of business. You need different strategies for these two business types.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Before getting into any form of business, especially the ones that are to be carried out online, all the questions listed and discussed above are very important to be asked and answered very well because it's the only way to know what's needed to be done in order to make the business succeed. A lot of people make the grave mistakes of not having all the facts at hand before jumping into a business of their choice and they end up paying the price for that decision.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You are absolutely correct on this as I have seen some business people that think that all that is needed is for you to have money before becoming successful in a business without the knowledge that you need. Understanding and answering questions is what is best for people to become successful in the world today.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
That's right. You're not supposed to know everything because you also learn in the process. But you need to have a good grasp and be able to address these basic questions before putting up any business, both online and offline. Unless you have a great deal of money to waste, then you can go ahead and start the business at your whim without contemplating on the possible risks.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Nobody becomes very successful by knowingly wasting their money on fruitless business investment. Money and time lost are never recovered no matter how hard you try. You may recover the money over the course of time but the time lost can never be recovered again but instead you will keep wasting more time.

You should never start on something that you do not know thoroughly.

I also agree that you really should know what is success for you so you can keep track of your improvement.

I used to think that advertising on social media will costs you a fortune. Yes it can in a way specially if you're paying for ads and stuff. But what I didn't realize until recently that advertising can be free. It doesn't have to be all fancy and expensive. Just the fact that you made a page on Facebook and tagging a few people is advertising in itself.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The reality is that advertising on facebook and other social media is always going to bring a whole lot of benefits to you as you are looking at making a whole lot of people know about the business that you are doing. Social media can be the main core of the business' marketing strategy. Traditional means like posting a flyer outside, buying an ad on the newspaper and word of mouth are becoming obsolete. We really need to look at other ways, one of them is through social media.

When you are doing online business you will have to do a lot of things. As an online entrepreneur, you are not only the owner of your business, but you are also content developer, seo expert, web designer, social media marketer, internet marketer etc. If you have budget, you can hire experts, however, you cannot always rely on other people, you must also have knowledge and skills in order to operate your business well.

Information is a key component in business. That's why companies spend so much money on marketing research and the current and possible trends in the industry. That's why knowing your customer acquisition cost is sometimes the make or break point in a sales pitch to an investor.

These are all important questions to ask yourself, however, I believe #5 and #6 are very important. When I launched my travel website, I did not know there were already so many websites in that niche. I was not aware of what was happening in the industry. Therefore, my travel website failed.
You should also know your potential customers. I launched a lingerie store and did not know who was my customers. I was selling a lingerie piece for $250 as well as $10. No one came to buy at my store.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Absolutely - knowing your customers are huge, and knowing what your competitors are doing too! I think you've got to cover those bases and have a good understanding of what your clients want, what they're prepared to spend and so forth.

I learned from my mistakes. Therefore, when I launched my health website, I already knew about the target audience and my competitors. I chose the niche carefully. Health is a broad topic, therefore, I focused on different kind of diets. My website is doing quite well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I think that's such a huge thing in success though - learning from your mistakes! I think it's naive to think that a person will never make any mistakes, we're all human after all. But being able to learn and grow from those experiences that may be seen as negative is a really important thing. Glad to hear your website is doing well now!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You must also have a knack for learning. Ten years ago, if someone had asked me whether I was interested in web designing, I would have bluntly said NO. I was a writer and I was only interested in developing mu writing skills. However, these days I am also working as a designer. I am still a writer. however, when I launched my blog, I had to change my roles very often.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think certain skills are also handy to have together - writing and being able to do graphic design are very useful, especially if you're creating your own website. I also think both of those skills are very transportable no matter where you're living in the world, so that's a nice added bonus too.

I think having social media account can be helpful for your website for promotion. I mean you can test out some of the assumptions. And see where you are going wrong. And how you can get people to click on the links that you need for conversion. Lot of assumption can be tested on the social media. It's a bit harder though.

Lingerie is a hard market, since that topic is a little taboo for some. Another thing to note is the success of Amazon. Amazon is killing the retail niche. Stores are closing down left and right due to it's massive success.

You should thoroughly investigate your niche before you decide to make a business. You should investigate for quite some time too, say a couple of months. You do not want to start something and then quit it, and having your time wasted when you could have been doing something else more successful.

This is a challenge with most people who want to create a business. They do not know which niche is right for them. I always tell people to start a business in the niche you love. Love coffee? Create a business surrounded by all things 'coffee'. Love aliens? Start a business around all things 'alien'. Just don't even start a business in a niche you hate, that's a little depressing, really.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

No doubt about that, the influence of social media on business. You should grab the opportunity of free advertising on social media to improve and get more traffic to your website. Only thing is just, to be honest about your content.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I do sometimes wonder about how many businesses misrepresent their products on social media - it can be easy to do that in this day and age, with doctoring photos or things like that. As you said, being honest with your content and what you can provide is hugely important and building a trustworthy business is priceless.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, because sometimes, owners just posting some intriguing content and heading which is not even close to their products. All they wanted is someone to click their site which is not really helpful for them.

In every business, there's always a questions that can be answer by yours. How will you confront people who have guts to question you about your business? How will you deal with them? So basically before launching anything, you must know how to answer those kind of questions as you are the owner of that particular business. It's like a thesis that needs information for you to say that your business is efficient to the market. This article is very convenient for those who are entrepreneurs or those who wants to enter into the world of businesses.

Such a good point. There's a lot of thought that goes into running and operating a business, and often that involves having to come up with answers to questions before those questions have even been asked! I think with social media, especially if your business is on social media or you are using social media to promote your business, for it to become more successful you need to make sure that your business is clearly defined and show how it clearly helps people. Social media runs on engagement and people's interest, so tapping into this is the only way to be successful. I agree that the aim of your business needs to be quite succinct and clear.

Social media/social media marketing goes hand-in-hand with businesses. You have to take advantage of things such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. to give your company the needed exposure and bring even more customers.

I still don't understand certain business owners that have so much potential but just refuse to expand onto the social media platforms.

Yes, you should have answers to all of these questions before starting or running a business. I also think that almost people are using social media on their everyday life which can help you market and grow your business. You can also post it if you have a blog/vlog or a Youtube channel. It can help you a lot. If you have a tight budget, social media is very helpful. You can post your business for free and share it on all of your friends. Internet is growing and it's more easy to advertise your business through social media like Facebook.

I like this sort of analytical breakdown when it comes to establishing a game plan for your business. I’m a guy that likes lists, the kind then can let you really take things a slow step at a time, so posts like these really work for me. It’s really practical, down to Earth advice for anyone looking to start an online business.

I think a lot of people get into starting their own website/business and find themselves lost or failing, and it’s most likely because they wouldn’t know the answers to some of these questions. This is basically a roadmap to success.

In 2015, I launched my self hosted blog, after three months I lost interest.
Based on my experience, I can say that if you want to do something, you should always have a clear picture in your mind about the things you are going to do.

“…I can say that if you want to do something, you should always have a clear picture in your mind about the things you are going to do.”

I think you’re absolutely correct. I always make the comparison to driving a car. If you get in your car and then just start aimlessly driving, who knows where you’ll end up. You might find yourself somewhere nice, or you can end up hopelessly lost.

On the other hand, if you get in your car with a destination in mind and your road mapped out, you’re far likelier to end up where you want to be. Sure, you might take some wrong turns or hit some unexpected bumps, but you certainly improve your odds significantly.

Yup, going in without answers to these questions is like driving around on a dark night without your headlights on. Sure, you might think you know your way from A to B, but it makes it a whole lot harder (and more dangerous!) without them!

You actually use a simile that’s quite similar to one I use myself! I’m not going to type it out here so as to avoid being redundant, but I made the comparison to driving a car in my reply to vinaya in the above comment.

I think it’s why so many life coaches recommend people to create vision boards in order to attain their goals. You need to know what you want and constantly remind yourself of that. If you don’t have a vision in mind, as well as the steps you’re going to take to achieve it, you’re just going to be spinning your tires.

That's a good point you make, that social media is not just an advertising tool but also a networking tool. Back in the day people had to network by going to conferences or dinners with their peers, but these days it can all be done online!

We must know the nature of the business that we wikl take so that we can visualize your future into that business. It is hard to come in into the business without knowing the pros and cons of that business because if we know it we can plan accordingly in what to do when we start up that business. We must do research to gather data thatwill help us to make a better draft of our chosen business.

If we understood more of our customers and what we sell. I think there are lot of things to be learned in that case. As you can see that there seems to be a lot of small things to be learned. But overall you can see that it takes a lot of experiment on how to make small business and the brand successful. That's what I have learned so far from watching others and also experimenting on my own.

Understanding who your customers are will help you drive sales. When I opened a lingerie store I failed to understand who were my customers. I listed lingerie that were priced $250 as well as $10. I did not know women who looked for $250 product will never come to a store that is not yet established properly. And those who looked for $10 a piece may also never come to the store because they will also see $250 product.

Yes that is right, we should try to understand our target customers for us to have greater sales. We should try to figure out there need and wants when it comes to a product. Giving them the best treatment that they should receive is an advantage to establish trust and loyalty to them.

This is true. More and more understanding of customer gives us an idea what to and not to target. Some of the time it can be easier though and some of the time you have to focus on what you can do better. I have learned from the experience that customer research is very important.

I think there is always age, marital status and the place criteria. That's where things work. You can see that some of the time not doing that research costs the most. So depending on how you managed that it'd be definitely something you'd learn. Social media is a tricky beast to handle.

Must know the product well before you sell it out to social media. Totally agree, you see for yourself first how exactly your costumer and the media can view your product so you get to know if there are some details that you need to fix it or work on first. Always try on the product you are selling and be the model of it. In case the customer asked about the product, you know how to explained your item - you already knew how it works because you already tried it too.

One good question would be...Are you educating readers correctly about your company/business/products/services/goals? Because if the answer is no, you might want to reassess the situation and tweak things up a notch.

That line of a question about who you are trying to bring to your site is a good question because in business, especially an online business, you have to identify your market. It’s not enough to post on your timeline the ads of your business because not all of your friends and followers in social media may be interested. You can create a Facebook group to gather people of the same interest that is related to your business and from thereon you have an audience to speak of.

I am a firm believer that people who have the same interest will eventually attract each other. People searching for a specific service will find ways to find those services. The problem is sometimes these services are hard to find and it falls on the business owner's hand why they couldn't get to the customer.

The line statement that say that what do you sell online is one of the crucial thing that needs to be addressed in own opinion because people should be clearly aware of what you are trying to sell to the public. We should used colorful images if possible so that it can create a sense of attractiveness to our prospective customers. Giving them some choices on the product that is available could be also a good idea to start with.

I agree. But for people to know you and what you are selling, you must first do marketing. There are a variety of options, ranging from PPC, influencer marketing, social media marketing, and a whole lot more. People fail to recognize this, and they believe that as long as they have a great product, it will go far. No, the buying market should know that you exist first. Like for E-commerce platforms such as Amazon, do your best to land on page 1 or 2 of the search results on your keywords.

How many competitors do you have and can you beat them? This is the phrase that caught my attention because this is a fact that needs to be addressed properly. First of all is that we should know who are our competitors and what are their strength and weaknesses so that we can come up a strategy on how we can eliminate them in the competition. Many businesses do not succeed because they do not understand on what are the root cause of their problems. Identifying the basic steps are crucial to company's success.

I agree. Running a business or profession is like playing sports. You research the competition to come up with strategies and tactics to beat them. You train hard and practice everything you have learned to be better. Repeat the same steps over and over. Your business will never get successful if you get complacent about it.

What's great about social media ads is it's targeting capability. You can target those people who see your ads based on their demographics, age, sex, and a whole lot more which can lead to conversions. And it costs a lot less, too. It has a ton of advantages compared to traditional ways of advertising.
