4 tricks to stay out of the dreaded "Promotions" tab in Gmail.

When you're sending out a lot of emails, you may notice that your lists with gmails in it aren't getting the same amount of responses compared to a list that has just business emails.  This is because you're likely landing in the dreaded promotions tab that no one ever goes through and thinks seriously about.  The promotions page is similar to a curse, if you land there then you're likely doomed and won't see a great return on investment from your email list.

Now, if you know what you're doing and can hit the inbox every time, you're golden and will have a great return with each email sent, but there are a few things that you have to do in order to hit the inbox and those things are:

Less is more when it comes to images
You can't fill your email up with images and think you're going to be seen as legitimate.  Google will likely see you as a promotional email and make sure you don't hit the inbox, dooming you to the promotions tab.  To fix this, only use one image or don't use any at all in order to increase your chances of landing in the desired inbox.

Don't fill your email with links
One of the cardinal sins of email marketing is to load your email with links.  This is because you will almost immediately get banished to the promotions tab and not see many clicks coming through.  If you reduce the number of links to one or maybe two, you will see your emails actually hitting the inbox.  You can't push it with this, you need to stay safe and that means you should never put more than 2 links in an email. 

Get personal with your emails
When it comes to having a successful email campaign, you need to get personal in each email going out, and that means you should be using the person name whenever you're sending something out.  If your first line of an email is "Hey there valued customer!" the email won't be personalized and the person receiving it will likely close it before they get to line 2.  Make it personal and show Google that people are actually reading your emails and they will likely keep you out of the promotions tab.

Your subject line actually matters
Your open rates will drastically affect your chances of landing in the desired inbox.  If people are opening your emails, because you're using attention-grabbing subject lines, you will almost always land in the inbox and avoid the promotions tab.  Google keeps track of open rates and will give emails more benefit if they're opened often, so use attractive subject lines and watch your open rates increase.


In conclusion
Email marketing isn't rocket science, but it can be screwed up fairly quickly, so be sure you memorize the 4 tips above and never break them.  You can't get greedy when it comes to putting in multiple links or using a dozen images, it won't actually help you out, so stick to the basics and use quality headlines that attract people and don't overdo it with images and links.  Be sure to personalize everything as well because people want to see they're actually being emailed and not seen as a "Valued Client" lol.

I am not much into email-marketing because i find it easier to reach my audience via social-media networks in order to turn it into more clicks and sales, but this tips are something we should keep in mind when doing this kind of marketing because we want people to see our emails and not just to miss them or dump them before they get any attention. Email marketing is getting the right target at your command unlike social media which is like using the shotgun that you are praying for a lucky shot. However there are things to do in email marketing. First is the building up of the email list. You have to gather the appropriate email addresses because getting any email address is like using social media that your prospects may not be into the niche of the website.

I would think that your information is very pertinent to anyone who does a lot of email promotion. I think it is important for everyone to understand the basics in terms of promotions and to be able to stick with it, and really understand what you are doing is important.

This is super helpful - I know that in my own personal gmail account, messages that end up in the Promotions tab often get overlooked by me, until well after they were sent. I definitely don't want that happening when I send out business related emails! The tips are helpful and easy to implement.

I really get irritated by seeing lots of promotion emails in my Gmail account and I never attended to them unless it's one that I personally knew to have applied for. Attending to all my mails is a serious problem for me, if I'm not mistaken at the moment, I have over 1900 unread mails. Can you imagine having that piled up with promotion mails? My Gmail account is a mess when it comes to unread mails.

Oh gosh 1900 unread mails! That's a lot - I actually made a bit of a New Year's Resolution at the start of this year to try and keep my inboxes under control. I went through about 20 emails a day at the start of the year to try and delete or attend to anything that hadn't been read. Now, my inbox is under control and I feel way less stressed! 4 tricks to stay out of the dreaded "Promotions" tab in Gmail.

It's seriously becoming a thing of worry for me, and most times I'm kind of scared to go into my mail box because I'm sure that the number would keep pilling up. Maybe be I would dedicate one whole day to read all these mails.

I think Gmail requires some level of understanding because some of the time even the inbox emails goes into promotion. Lot of email marketers are working on the settings that can bring the users to the inbox instead of the promotions. I am not sure how they all manage to get conversions these days. But it'd be interesting to see how this works out. So far it seems like few people have managed to work properly with the promotion tabs issues.

This is interesting, all this time I thought that e-mails from businesses always go to the promotions tab (except for the first time when you sign up). I guess there are some tricks that could really help businesses to get more attention from their target market.

I think that if people follow Razzy's ideas. They will be less likely to end up in a place that don't want to be, which is in junk mail or labeled simply as a "promotion." It is important to try to get the most bang for the buck when advertising and getting good email out there is important.

Generally speaking, I do not check the "promotion" tab on my gmail inbox. I use gmail for sending promotional materials even though I have a custom email address. I use gmail because I find it convenient. Since I do not check the "promotion" tab, I can assume that my promotional emails also end up in that space and go unchecked. I did not know using too many images will provoke gmail to see these messages as promotional.
I knew about links though, if you are using too many links in your email body, your email is going to end up in the spam box, if you are sending it for the first time, or in the promotional tab if you have already used that address.

I have been receiving emails with several links that my tendency is to ignore it. I am quite allergic to links because it seems to me that those links are clearly a way of spamming. So maybe just 1 link will do. And being personal is very important especially when you are sending a business email where the response is very vital to your business. Just a short mention of the location or the backgrounder of the receiver is big deal. For example, when I receive such an email that tells me I live in a good neighborhood then it gets my interest.

That is very true. even in the daily emails, we receive in our inbox we almost ignore the emails which are promoting something. although I doubt in the times of social media ruling the promotional and marketing scene how much relevance does email marketing have? I am not all an expert in marketing but this question does arise in my mind sometimes. Maybe it is still very relevant and does make a great sense in sending emails. I guess we would never have received so many promotional emails in our inbox on a daily basis if email marketing had lost its importance
