Selling less product on your website is usually a good idea in the beginning

When you start selling online, you probably think having 1,000's of items for someone to browse through is the best for your profits because it will increase the chances of someone liking something you have for sale.  I'm here to tell you that it probably isn't the best idea to start off with as many products as you can list, mainly because you could be wasting space and that means your visitors might miss what they're actually looking for or need.

A website that has 10 items will usually sell a good amount compared to one that has thousands.  This is because the smaller website is more specific and can get very targeted with their marketing.  The larger website with more products has to select specific products to run ads for, or they just do it for their homepages, but in the end the more specific you can get the better it will be for your profits.

Figure out the best of the best, then add them to your website
If you're reselling something or selling your own products, make sure you have the best performing products on the front page so everyone will see them right away.  I like to start with 30 to 50 products and reduce that down to 10 after a couple of months.  I figure out what's selling, what's getting viewed the most, and what people are asking me about the most then I'll start removing the items or services that are collecting dust.

By doing this I'm funneling people to the hot products or services that I know sell well.

Write up detailed product descriptions
People always skimp on product descriptions and it's a shame.  How many times have you been on Amazon and saw a product description that was a paragraph long?  Now, how many times have you landed on a product and saw they added images to the description as well as statistics?  Those are usually the products that sell better, and you should take note of what they're doing in order to boost sales.

If you don't want to write up a great description of your products or services, why are you selling them in the first place?  Get out there and start writing, or hire someone to do the writing for you, in order to get the best out of your product or service.

Set up ads on Facebook for each product
I really enjoy setting up Facebook ads for my smaller product websites because I can set up 1 ad for each product.  I don't have to cherry pick from 100's or 1,000's of products since I already know what sells well Selling less product on your website is usually a good idea in the beginning  After I set up my ads, I'll then get very specific on the targeting so I know the people seeing my ads are ones that will be more likely to purchase.

You should always have an email capture form on your website, whether it's static on your page or in the form of a drop-down, just have it and send out newsletters once a week to keep those people coming back Selling less product on your website is usually a good idea in the beginning

Monitor everything and rotate products if necessary
If you're not monitoring everything, you're likely going to fail, so be sure to have an eagle eye on what's happening with your website and nothing should go wrong (hopefully).  If you notice one of your hot sellers is starting to slow down, bring in something similar and keep them both on your website.  After a month or two, compare them and see which is doing better, then either keep them both or eliminate one of them.

Don't get attached to your products or services, they're not your children, so be ready to remove them if they aren't selling well.

In conclusion
You can certainly have a website selling 1,000 different products, but you can always make more if you set up 10 websites selling 10 products each.  Yes, it's a lot of work and takes a great deal of time, but just imagine if you had just 3 of your 5 websites selling dozens of products or services each day Selling less product on your website is usually a good idea in the beginning

Its nice for every one to make an ecommerce website for selling products. If you have huge and huge product sources than there have no other idea except making an ecommerce store with the all product and with all descriptions. Every product should need to have a good description and every product should need to get some reviews also.Every body wants to start with some 40-50 products but I prefer to start with some specific category. Recently I have been seen a famous worldwide fashion model has been started an ecommerce store and getting popular within short time because she has been marketing only with some specific categories. It works.

Thanks

This happens to be an area that am not conversant with. I should learn how to own an E-commerce.

There is this site SFI that I was affiliated to. It encouraged its members to open an E-commerce shop. Am sorry I never. On Seocheckout one should trade there too. Still waiting to learn

I want to indulge in affiliate marketing but the advice I got is to have my own website for convenience in promoting the products. An advantage of doing affiliate marketing with an own website is that you can also earn from the traffic that your site gets. That is like having a side income other than the earnings from the affiliate marketing. But the issue now aside from the cost of creating my own website is the time that I have to put in.

Selling less products on the beginning ia a great idea. By doing it, you can focus on the product well and advertise them well. You can give more detailed information to, which is an important factor. And when your site is running well then you can add up some products little by little.

Exactly Selling less product on your website is usually a good idea in the beginning

I had a few dozen services on one of my websites and recently reduced it to just 8. I noticed that not only my work day was getting easier, but my profits were actually increasing due to the fact I could get down and detailed with all of the services I now have. I was able to respond almost immediately without having to think of what service someone was interested in, which kept people on my website to make a purchase.

It's only been a couple months since I removed the majority of my services from one of my websites, but in that short amount of time my profits have almost doubled Selling less product on your website is usually a good idea in the beginning It's likely due to the fact that people don't have to sift through a bunch of services, figure out what is best for them, then filter down their selection to just a single service. All 8 of my services are different, and each targets a specific thing, so it's much easier for people to select what they actually need before reading the entire description Selling less product on your website is usually a good idea in the beginning

When you reduce the number of items or products on your website, you're preventing the chance that someone will get overwhelmed by what you have on there, and that means they will likely make a purchase since they don't have to sift through dozens or hundreds of products and services Selling less product on your website is usually a good idea in the beginning

That was great. It is a good strategy that you did. I am no expert but I think you did a good job, and when the time comes when you already settled those fewer services you now offer, you can add other services little by little. I am hoping for your success and growth of your business. Thanks for agreeing with me too.

So often I think people assume that having a bunch of listings for sale is the best idea, but the old saying "less is more" often rings true in this case I think. Ensuring that you know what's selling well and starting with a small product range allows you to build up from a solid foundation, and I think that's hugely important for any business.

I agree. As you start your business, more attention is needed, so to be able to that it is better to focus on less products or services you provide.

I agree and i also think when there is a chosen few managing is really easy. This will give you enough time for other matters like advertising and improvements.

This point about placing few products advertisement on one's new website is spot on. When you have your own business website newly set up, it's very important to first work on getting your site up and running with getting lots of traffic before bombarding it with lots of products. It may give the your prospective customers a bad impression about your business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree, it's better to choose the most impressive product line for starters to make your business unique and enticing for potential costumers and clients. This way, people will know that your products are with good quality and gone through a selective process.

Exactly. You have to focus on promoting your site and let the customers feed you about the idea what to sell next time. limited products is enough for newly open website.

Yeah people will get bored if each and every time you keep making advertisements. I think it is wiser to first of all establish yourself and grow the audience. When people really trust you they will easily take up the products you market to them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
That's right. The owners should focus on some limited services or products only and just read the situation if they can still manage to add more. The first thing to do is just to advertise your site and let the customers give you some details and ideas about the product they want by inquiring at your site.

Yeah, you want to develop a good following for your website when you're just starting out, so making sure that you have the best products to display will make it more likely for people to find things that they're going to buy and make it easier on your part to focus on a few products since you're not really expecting a lot of orders. It will save time and money for you in maintaining your inventory.

Having a number of products on your website will be more benefiting as you can focus on advertising them well. It also saves a lot of time, money and effort. Maintaining not too many products on some websites can be more fulfilling and basically pays off.

I don't really agree in limiting the number of products being sold in a site i don't believe in being a minimalist. But I do believe in focusing and highlighting the most viable products on your site can give you additional traffic and conversions. Also a good write-up is a must. Videos, tutorials, reviews focusing on the chosen products are also useful and effective.

I think some of the time the right products need to be there. And inventory needs to be focused on quality material. So based on that you can see that people who don't have the right set of the products, they are more likely to have their own set of the issues with the shop development. I am of opinion that people should be spending the time and money on the website that can have decent products and also product have some sort of demand.

From my sister's experience, that's completely true. You need to put the right products first, those with better quality, or more popular, all those items that can attract a lot of customers. Also, you need to update your inventory on a daily basis or at least weekly, because clients tend to get bored easily, and you need them to keep focus on your merchandise.

Yes adding products as sales starts is the best strategy. But also we have to experiment with what items sale. And that's why amazon and other sites can be handy. And we can sell multiple products in such condition. And we can make sure that less products per platform and also we can make sure of the type of the products have consistency for the sales.

Write up detailed product descriptions is actually important to help potential clients to have a more technical information on your services or products. People nowadays pay more attention on specifications and technical aspects of the product because of comparison. There are lots of products and services that are similar in nature but have difference in technical aspects, where most buyers have their decisions.

I think that this philosophy is partially why YouTube merchandise tends to sell so well. Even the most popular YouTubers typically don’t have merch stores with more than a couple dozen items. Some don’t even do that much. A lot of them will open up a store for a limited amount of time, selling only a handful of products. And what typically happens? The stuff sells like hotcakes.

It kind of reminds of the book, The Paradox of Choice. It places an emphasis on how eliminating choices that shoppers have to make greatly reduces their anxiety and makes it more likely that they’ll buy something quicker.

For me it's best to have a lot of products to sell if you have a new store because this would attract more people. If a new store only has a few products people would generally not be attracted to it since there's only a few products to choose from.

I think it won't be that much of a problem if you focus on the quality and brand of the product. It builds exclusivity. If the products you have really hits on your target market it won't be a problem selling them.

I agree, if you have unique products it's best to have a line that showcase the best of what you offer. But if you have products that are common in the market. Its wise to have them in bulk, sometimes it helps that you have them in quantity specially products that are in demand in the market.

This reminds me of the gasoline station that a friend had put up. He also put up an eater inside the compound of the gasoline station so that customers who buy gas can also be a potential diner. Unfortunately, the eatery did not last for a year due to bleak sales. One Chinese businessman says that it is better to focus on the gasoline business and think of a way to make it grow instead of including another business that will ruin the focus and attention to the main business.

That's a good point, i think management is the key point there. If you are capable of having multiple business then i think it's fine, but having businesses that you can't handle well is a waste of time and money.

In direct selling focusing on a single product is quite effective there's a lot of people who became millionaires using this tactic but, I haven't tried creating a site just to sell several products.

Those tips are great for those people who want to start a business online. The strategy you mentioned is really good and could really help a business grow. I believe that the most important key to have a successful is determination. Also, give a good review about your product so that they will patronize it. Giving them good product will also give you good fortune, its a win-win for the both of you.

That's a good technique for someone who is just starting their business. Pick the best product to sell that you think that will be bought easily. To much product when your business is just starting is a hassle, you are also not sure if you can get more customer so it's better to start with a limited product where you are sure that wont get stock. We can increase our products if our business is already blooming that way our customers can have more choose to pick to.

This is a good strategy I did not think it could work like this. Having my own website and product I will probably sell it one website because I believed that it is better to have many options. Reading your article make me realize that this could be a great strategy and it would probably work compare to my plan. Through this strategy you can closely monitor your sales in each product being more hands on the product. This tips are very helpful make more articles like this, Tommy. Thanks.

I am new business owner. For now I have few products I offer in my business. I do this because I want to focus first on improving my products as well as our services. I am trying to avoid waste of money and resources for failed system in my business. I will refer to this article for future advice.

I agree on this one. Better do some trial and error first. Get know what is the best product what the customer really love to use. Instead of making too much of product right away without even knowing it yet or by doing some surveys if the customer really likes it or not, because this can turn to waste of your money and effort. Try to make just few samples.

Greed or ignorance. That's what drives some website owners to offer so many products for sale on their website.

There is one site I knew which sold just one product - an ebook which contained a list of markets where freelancers could sell the stories or articles they'd written. With each update, they'd sell more ebooks.

Now if they'd tried to sell lots of things to writers, they probably would't have made as much as they did selling this "writers markets" ebook. There's something we can learn from their strategy.

I agree on this one. It's like a restaurant that's just started out. You can usually spot a good restaurant from a bad one from the size of the menu. A restaurant can only handle so much menu even at the start. Having a big menu means having to prepare and buy ingredients for that big menu. Usually it's a sign that a restaurant is using processed and precooked food. Not a very good sign in my opinion.

Yes, I do agree completely with your point. there is no logic in going for a lot of products on a single website. it is always better to keep it simple not only for yourself but also for your potential customer. on the other hand, it makes much sense to have more websites if you want to sell more products. I think most of the successful sellers will possibly be working on the same principle and that is to keep it simple and organized.

I agree that less is more. I have an online store and it used to sell more than 200 products. As a beginner, i find it stressful back then to monitor what's selling and what's not. And with a very minimal capital, i really find it hard to get my business going. Now, i just keep it simple and was able to build a good inventory on each product.

I agree that fewer products, in the beginning, is good. If you add too many, it can be very overwhelming. And then you are just setting yourself up for failure in my opinion.

I feel that people tend to think that if they have 100s of products, they will earn lots more. But if you are not able to keep up, or are just learning the ropes of the business, it will not be as easy for you to earn.
