What you don't know about SEO may hurt you

Understanding SEO isn't the easiest thing to grasp, and it can actually hurt your website more than you know, if you decide to do the work yourself.  Hell, you could actually hire a dedicated SEO team and they could hurt your rankings and websites image in a short amount of time if they don't know what they're doing!  This is why I research and implement every new "method" I read about, on test websites, so I can be sure it will work or it won't work for a clients website.  Remember, if you're running a service and selling anything that relates to a clients rankings, you'll want to be sure to do plenty of testing before implementing because you're never sure if this new thing is actually going to work or if it's going to burn the website it's done to.  It's better to be safe than sorry What you don

In this discussion I'll be going over the 4 things that can actually hurt your website if you don't understand what SEO is and what you're actually doing when placing a link.  Those 4 things are:

You could be building backlinks that hurt you
Building backlinks doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out.  Building the right backlinks in the right manner takes a little more work to do and can take a PHD in rocket science to do lol What you don  You don't actually need a degree to do this, calm down, it's just a funny way of saying that building the right backlinks takes time and effort since it's not something you can do immediately.

If you go around and drop your links on any website you find, you probably won't have the best backlink profile in the eyes of Google, and your time would have been better off researching some niche related websites and placing a link there.  You may have spent a few hours placing links on random sites, and gotten a slight boost, but you could have placed a fraction of the links on related websites and hit page 1 for your keyword if it's a low competition one.  So, you'll need to value your time a little better and work smarter, not harder What you don

Placing a bunch these low quality backlinks can actually have little bombs just waiting to blow up on you.  Your low quality backlink profile could have a bunch of these little bombs, or just one, but any of them that gain a penalty means they blow up and hurt your rankings a bit since you're linking to "bad neighbors".  Now, there are a lot of SEO specialist that say this won't happen, but why not play it safe and only build high quality links instead What you don

No one will actually find you through the search engines
If you don't know what you're doing, when it comes to SEO, you will likely hurt your rankings or not boost them at all.  This means that no one will find you through the search results and that means less traffic and sales for you.  You could always be a successful website owner simply through banner advertising and PPC campaigns, but that's not always the case because a lot of webmasters can't rely on paid leads the entire time.

If you don't do SEO properly, it will actually take some additional funds to bring someone in to fix the problem even before they try to boost your rankings.  If you have SEO campaigns built on top or bad SEO work hat was already done, you won't boost your rankings much and you're sort of paying twice as much for SEO or paying for SEO that is only half effective.

You might not be adding unique and valuable content to your website
I've actually send this done thousands of times, and it's because the website owner has a brick and mortar business that relies on a lot of foot traffic, not random search engine traffic.  Basically, the owner of the website doesn't add a lot of quality content to their blogs or sub pages that is related to the niche they are in.  This is because they don't think they need to, or they simply just don't understand SEO, either way it's not a great plan of action.

Not adding content to your blog or subpages means you're opening the door for competitors to come in and take over, which isn't something you want.  So, instead of letting your competitors win, why not focus on some niche related content that isn't always pitching a product or service and provides value when someone reads it.  If you can do this, you'll boost your rankings and make more money from all the search engine traffic you'll eventually get What you don

In conclusion
Not understanding SEO isn't a game killer, unless you start doing it yourself and think "I can do this easily!", which will usually turn out to be a bad decision lol.  It takes a very long time to learn everything there is to know about SEO, so you'll need to research everything possible and test out your ideas on burner websites that you can ditch when they get a penalty, if they do at all.  Research, test, figure out what works, use it for yourself, profit What you don

For small site owners, it is recommended to do your own SEO work if you have the time to learn the SEO methods. That will make it easier for you instead of hiring an SEO specialist to do it for you because it is not comfortable if you have no budget for the work that you may just be not satisfied when the result doesn’t come in at once. At least you will see for yourself how SEO methods work if you do it yourself.

I use the Zemanta plugin. It often suggests quality related links to supplement my posts. But I learned the hard way that I need to check the recommended links. Even though they show up, when you click on them sometimes they lead to nowhere. Other than that though I find the plugin very useful.

What is your opinion about using the plugins that find related content to enhance your blog post?

Do you think it's good or bad SEO?

If we are not building backlinks with the related sites or building backlinks from low quality sites, backlinks will do more harm than benefit. Therefore, we need to be very careful about building backlinks. If you are using automated tools to build backlinks, it is very likely that your backlinks are low quality.
The primary aim of SEO is to get organic traffic by improving your visibility on search engines. If you do not appear in the top results, chances of getting organic traffic become slim. You might get traffic from other sources, however, the most reliable traffic is always from search engines.

I think some of the time keyword related optimization can be really bad. Some people learn to manage the SEO but it does not work for them. I have learned things to be more focused will often tempt you to make wrong decision with SEO. I have managed to make use of the simple things with SEO. And for me that is giving me some results in terms of the links and other things.

I have heard that a lot of the time you should not use many keywords on the page as google will basically turn a blind eye to it. So I usually limit my money keywords to at least 3 at the most (and sometimes I think this is too many). So go for 2-3 keywords, and I usually use long-tail keywords as I feel these keywords are what works best for me.

Yes there is a specific weight for each page. Depending on the words used on the page. And how many of them being the keyword. I have not seen that calculation lately. Because google changes those sort of posts adding more things to confusion. So it can be hard to say how many keywords are good or bad.

As you've often reflected in your previous posts, having a few good, quality backlinks is far more valuable than having many mediocre or even terrible ones. Quality over quantity is absolutely necessary when it comes to backlinks and ranking with Google. Which is understandable; someone with low effort backlinks should not be ranked near those who actually put effort in. With regards to the idea of not adding unique or valuable content to one's site, this is an issue I've seen all too often. A lot of business owners think the occasional update is enough to get them attention, but little do they know how much effort it actually takes.

This is mostly what I preach about when it comes to SEO. Still not many people actually believe this to be so. I still see people buying thousands (and sometimes hundreds of thousands) of very low quality backlinks. What exactly does one need to do to get through to some people in regards to SEO?!

I would never ever buy thousands of backlinks (I did once before as an experiment, and did it on purpose to see exactly what would happen, and to see if I could regain rankings after I basically tried to clean up the low quality backlinks) to a money site or something else I was very passionate about. Another thing is, is that some people try to do negative seo for their competitors, when in reality they are missing out on SEO opportunities for themselves because they are so focused on tarnishing their competitor's website that they completely miss the opportunities that are given to them. So hopefully at some point in the future, google will know exactly when someone is trying to tarnish another competitor's rankings.

An analogy that Tommy had previously used for the quality over quantity argument was that it's like going to a restaurant and buying one milkshake versus getting 10 glasses of water. Sure there were more glasses of water than milkshakes, but which one would be the one that leaves you satisfied? It's a good thing that you tried the experiment for yourself, as that directly proves that the importance of quality backlinks isn't just SEO experts blowing hot air. As for undermining competition, I'm sure that Google will find a way to weed out people trying to do so, as recently they've really been cracking down on people abusing their systems - particularly on YouTube, but I'm sure they'll move on to other fields as well.

Lack of knowledge and experience is one thing that first kills your work in SEO and if nothing is done, you are definitely not heading to any positive direction. If you have no good idea of how to create backlinks, it's best to ask for assistance and get a good one that would help your ranking. It's also very important to not to be in a haste in creating a content because once it's not written well with full details and facts, it's definitely going to attract less viewers.

True. That's why sometimes it's better to pay a little bit more for professional input or assistance. Because at the end of the day, professionals know what they're doing. And if you think you're not skilled enough to get it done as of now, it's better to trust someone with the necessary skills to do so.

Or you could also educate yourself by reading guides and articles that specifically tackle the harder areas of SEO such as the backlinks.

I have learned through it and even though that I am not a pro or anything, I do know the basics.

An amazing article because many people think that just doing ANY type of SEO will automatically boost your ranks but if it is not done properly it could actually harm them.

The backlinks which you have mentioned is the best example. You should always look for the high-quality ones and ignore the spammy.

Another thing that I often see beginners do is just stuff the keyword over and over where it doesn't fit or make sense so it is overly used.
