How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks

Physical businesses are ones that have an actual location and don't rely heavily on digital sales like an SEO company, web design company, or online marketing company.  You may also have heard the term "Brick and Mortar Business" which is the same thing.  Setting up a physical store front is much more difficult to do compared to setting up a website, but they're very similar when it comes to getting the sales rolling in.  You're ready to make money, but you need to get people to come in and pay for your products or services, and this is where marketing comes into play!

You can take the quick route and set up some PPC campaigns in order to bring people into your store or website, but that won't get them to actually open up their wallets.  What you'll need to do is use some marketing tricks in order to continue contacting them, get a product in their hands that they will love, and basically get them to remember who you are and what you do.  It's not the easiest thing to do since a lot of this will usually cost more for a physical business, since you will need to invest in product as well as marketing tactics, but it's worth it!

In this discussion I'll be covering a few tricks you can use to boost your sales through little marketing tricks, and they are:

Restaurants giving away free food for profits
A lot of successful businesses will give away something for free in order to keep customers coming back time and time again.  This isn't exactly a new trick, but I'm going to go over why it works well.

It works so well because people never really want to spend money on something new that they might not like.  So if you're giving something away for free, that they were already interested in, you will see a lot of people coming back multiple times and spending a decent amount each time.  Think of it this way, McDonald's gives out free toys in their happy meals because they know kids want them, and the parents don't want to deal with their child yelling "I want that McDonald's toy!!!!" so they go and purchase the crumby food for their child lol.

Another way to give stuff away for free is to have a members card, or stamp card, that you will mark for every visit the person has to your establishment.  You can give away something for free whenever they come in 5, 10, or even 15 times because you're basically saying "You're such a loyal customer that you've earned this for free".  Of course, the higher number of times you require them to make a purchase from you, the less likely they will come back to fill out their cards.  Between 5 and 10 times is pretty standard, and you'll see more success with a number closer to 5.  If you want to use this method, be sure to start off with a lower number and increase it over time to see what the best success rate is and stick with it.

This method actually works with plenty of business types, not just restaurant or cafes How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks  Be sure to give away something that you can afford to lose in order to keep them coming back in.

Loss leaders are your friend
If you don't know what a loss leader is, I'll give a quick explanation of it.  A loss leader is something that costs you more to produce than you sell it for.  It's basically an investment into a product or service in order to get customers to come in and buy more than just the loss leader.

I'm going to use McDonald's as an example again because they did this right, and I use to work there a long time ago so I know they use loss leaders to bring people in How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks

McDonald's uses loss leaders to get people into their establishments, and not just any loss leader, they use chicken nuggets to get everyone in.  Yes, their chicken nuggets are loss leaders that bring people in to spend even more money.  McDonald's does this really well, because they target children in their commercials and they always show the kids eating chicken nuggets.  Also, they run commercials when kids aren't in school, which will increase the chances of the kid actually seeing the commercial and asking their parents to go to McDonald's because they now want some chicken nuggets.  How many times to you think a parent will cave in and get their kid chicken nuggets and not purchase something for themselves or even the entire family?

Basically, that loss leader just pulled in an entire dinner order for a family of 4 and McDonald's only lost like $2.25 from the nuggets but profited on everything else How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks  If you can make your own loss leader, you can skyrocket your sales How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks

First visits are free
Not many businesses will go this route because they have to front the money it costs for the service or product every time a person comes in to buy something.  You'll need a database of clients who have come in before in order for this to work, otherwise everyone will say it's their first visit and you will go broke really quick.

What you'll do is give them their first meal or service for free, which will get them to come in and try you out.  Remember, people love free stuff and if they end up liking what you're giving away, they will usually come back and spend money at your establishment.

One way around the downfall of this method is to only give away one thing for free from the entire order.  This works well if you have people purchasing multiple things, such as automotive shops as well as restaurants, since there is usually a plethora of items on the bill.  Of course, you won't remove the most expensive item on the list unless you're absolutely sure they will come back and spend money.  One way to figure out if they will likely come back is to guesstimate how much money they make, and you can do this easily with an auto shop because you're working on their car lol.  A Mercedes or range rover is a better option to remove the most expensive service and a Honda civic isn't.  The person driving the more expensive car will likely come back whenever they have a problem with their car, and you know they can afford to pay for the better parts How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks

Avoid discounted items on the first visit
Many experts will tell you to avoid discounting items on a customers first visit because they will expect that same discount every time they come in.  If they come in a second time, and the discount is gone, they will see your service or products as overpriced since they paid much less the first time around.

Discounts aren't to be avoided, but they're not the best thing to give away when the person is coming in for the first time.  Giving away something for free is much better than giving a first time discount because people won't expect you to always give away a free product.

Think about it, if you're giving a 50% discount to someone who purchases a $75 product for $40 and it costs you $25 to get it yourself, you're making $25 from that sale.  That's not a bad thing at all, $25 profit is a nice chunk of change, but it could be more each time when the customer comes in for the third or fourth time.  If you're giving away a 50% discount to them each time the come in, you will make much less than if you just gave away the item in the beginning.  Lets say the customer comes in 10 times and expects a 50% discount, you're going to profit $250 for those 10 visits.  If you gave away the first $75 item for free, then every visit after that is profit and you would make $700 for the 10 visits.  So, how much would you want in your pocket after their 10 visits?  How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks

In conclusion
I didn't write up a huge list of marketing tricks, because ones like these are few and far between.  Sure, there are a lot of these that could be written about, but not many of them work lol.  The few I mentioned above are sure winners if you implement them the right way, so get to work and see which one will bring you in the most sales How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks

I like the ideas of freebies rather than discounts on first visits because obviously people know that they are not going to get items for free every time, but you are right in that they might expect a discount every time they come.

There are actually a lot of restaurants that give away free items over giving out discounts. This is because it's easier to pay for a mean than give away discount over and over again to the same person. Just like I said above, if you give away something that costs you a few bucks, it's always better than losing a few bucks with each sale How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks

Think about it, if you had just one person coming to you for something and you're always giving them a discount, they will tell other people that they get a discount each time and that spreads like a virus. You'll get people coming in saying "Well John Doe gets a discount every time he's in here, how come I don't get one on my first visit?" and of course, you'll have to discount them to keep everyone happy. If someone happens to be within ear shot, you now have another person that could say "Well they got a discount, how come I'm not getting one?" and it will spread.

That example is just with one person, imagine if you have 100 or even 1,000 customers each day wanting to get a discount because someone else did? Even if you're just losing a few bucks with the discount, it stacks up over time and could be an exponential amount of money compared to if you just gave away something for free How a physical business can skyrocket their sales with simple marketing tricks

I think if they start giving out some freebies they might really be surprised at how fast their sales will take off. It just seems to be one of the things that successful entrepreneurs use.

The word of mouth is still very effective. An actual example is the recent Halloween where we were deluged with 86 trick-or-treaters where last year we only had 33. When we asked the kids how they got to know that we were giving loot bags for the Halloween, they said that the kids who came here told them so. Take note that Halloween is not in our tradition and it is just starting here for 5 years or so. The word of mouth is truly a great way to spread the news.

Thank you for the tips of growing physical business. I've always believe the fact that people will not be addicted to free stuffs, but addicted to discounts. So, giving out certain things for free can be a way to keep them coming back.

Greats ideas to just test the waters and know when to stop, because humans can so be Oliver twist if one doesn't put a break , fast to see how the plans are working or if there are working at all.It one thing to put all these tips to test or work but it another to be sure it really working out as planned.if it working out I will say fine but if not it time to move away from it.It seems a bit bogus for my country though.

The truth is that not all the tips will work in most of the countries and that's a serious concern, but the ones that work need to be implemented at the end.

FREE is a powerful word that is being used by marketers to entice people to look into their products or services. It is an irresistible offer to prospective customers. Who would resist FREE giveaways? People would rush to get theirs when they heard that something is given for free. I like also the idea of giving discounts when the customer comes back and not on their first purchase. I actually have an experience of going to other stores when the store I used to buy gives a discount on my first purchase and do not give any more on my repeat purchase.

Giving things out for free is a way to make the clients connects and that is a good way to do it at the end.

Yup especially in holiday seasons or anniversary celebration of your business. It's a way of giving back to your customers for patronizing your products or services. Business is not always about gaining, it is also about giving to your valued customers.

I agree most with avoiding discounts on first visits. Some of my relatives are retailers and I always wondered why they never just gave out discounts earlier in the year like all other places so they could potentially gain more customers and get ahead of their competition. Then it was explained to me that customers start to get used to this and will refuse to pay regular price once they set the discounted one as a standard, and that made me realize why not more companies do this to get ahead of the competition, which is simply because they can't.

Discounts are addictive and some customers doesn't value it and that's the reason companies should avoid them at the end

I think restaurant business can be challenging. You can see that some of the time such business have to work really hard on small things. And they have to get things in proper order. If not done, then that is going to affect the way they are doing business. I guess we learn that from our experience. I think physical business requires a lot of social understanding. And then that can be one way to do the business. You have to work on those things and get the business in proper order.

The freebies in restaurants is popular here. The most common are the free dish when your order reaches a certain amount. A free dish of noodles is not bad so diners tend to go back. There’s also the free soup that comes with your order of the free pitcher of iced tea when there are 4 of you dining. That means you don’t have to order drinks anymore. Thinking about it, the diners show their gratefulness by coming back and patronizing the said restaurants.

I am thinking to set up a physical store for local customers and online store for the distant customers. Having a physical store can become very costly because you need to have a front store as well as warehouse, you need to spend money on rent, staffs etc. , however, you can promote your online store through the word of the mount if you have a physical store.
The tips mentioned here will definately help me.

This was really interesting, especially in terms of your "loss leader" commentary. You could write an ebook about "Chicken Nugget Economics" or something, lol. I think it is genius marketing and just smart business when we learn how to effectively market such products which may have otherwise fallen by the wayside or become a huge financial waste or financial liability upon the company. This takes creativity and vision to do, but I liked the example you gave, even though I really don't like McDonald's as a company overall. Still, you have to acknowledge their savvy and longevity.

Nice article! Here in my country most commercial establishments resort to raffle contests which usually runs for a month. Well known establishments go for an annual raffle which usually starts every June coinciding with the start of classes and ends on March which is the end of classes. June is a lean month for businesses here, people just spent their last money for their children's education that's why businesses do raffles to attract customers. Prizes range from cars and suv's to family and digital showcases.
