5 things you might be doing that will hurt your list growth

We all know that list growth is something you will need to focus on if you plan on being as profitable as possible down the road. If you're not building your list now, you're just setting yourself back an undetermined amount of time, which is never good. Imagine what you could be doing today if you had captured the email of everyone that came to your website since you went live, you could be making a lot of money from those emails via email marketing 5 things you might be doing that will hurt your list growth But that's not what this discussion is about, I'm here to talk about what you could be doing that is hurting your list growth.

Your content is the first thing that will hurt your list growth since it's what people are interacting with as soon as they get to your page. Big corporations don't seem to know about this because they constantly post fluffed up content that doesn't do much for the reader. It doesn't matter if you're a big brand or a little mom and pop shop, readers can only take so much before they swear to never come back to your website.

If you aren't already seen in a good light by the majority of your readers, here is what you will need to work on, and avoid, so you don't hurt the growth of your lists.

Stop using sayings like "Avoid like the plague".
Back when the plague was a thing, this saying held some weight when it was said, but now it does not. When people started saying this online it was just fine, but it seems like every single person with a blog is saying it, which makes it watered down and hold less weight. I can say "This dog bed is horrible, avoid it like the plague!" or "Cigarettes cause cancer, avoid them like the plague!" and both sayings are dumbed down to a point that people look past. A bad dog bed is now on the same level as a cancer causing product, and neither should be on the same leve or even near each other in terms of negative reviews.

Lazy writing is a rampant thing on many blogs because the writers are getting lazy. If you can stick to your guns, and not be lazy when writing, you can usually build your lists pretty well. Using trite sayings like "Avoid like the plague" just shows you're giving up and can't think of something clever to put in it's place. Stand out from the crowd and write in your own way 5 things you might be doing that will hurt your list growth

Your visitors get tired quickly
When someone gets to your website, they shouldn't get bored after just 5 seconds of reading. You will need to craft your content in a way that keeps them engaged and interested, in order to grow your lists. Your first sentence needs to be engaging enough to keep them reading all the way down the page. This isn't the easiest thing to do, but you can learn it over time as you keep writing 5 things you might be doing that will hurt your list growth

Tweak your first sentence so it keeps people captivated. Something like "We all know that smoking is bad for your health" won't have as much of a pull compared to "10 million people die each year from smoking". If you're invested in your writing, get right to the point and make sure people know what they're about to read, as soon as they start reading. Don't run circles around what you're trying to say, if you're the authority, people want to see you say it up front and with that authority they think you have.

Lackluster Subjects
You need to be writing on subjects that entice people to come in and read. It doesn't matter what you do, if you're trying to spruce up an old, out-dated, ugly title you'll likely fail and no one will read it. You'll want to think of everything yourself and use some tricks to make your title more engaging.

If you're writing about something old, make the title new and enjoyable in order to make people want to read it. Sure, they may already know everything you're writing about, but your title can boost their internal flame of love for the subject and the will come read your article or post.

If you're unsure how to write your subjects and titles, go with your own personal narrative. Your own narrative is always unique and people will be more attracted to something they haven't seen before compared to something that has been rehashed a few thousand times. People always like to read about personal experience, so use that to your advantage 5 things you might be doing that will hurt your list growth

Boring Language
I can't tell you how many times I've gotten to a website to see the most boring articles I've read in a while. Usually this happens when I'm researching a topic that I'm writing for a client, so I tend to read a little longer than normal when landing on a page like this.

People always think that they need to sound sophisticated when writing, which backfires 99% of the time because they aren't sophisticated themselves. It's like trying to be a fashion model and you're a geek living in your moms basement, it just doesn't work.

Write like you're a human being behind a keyword that has something to say. Add your own personal experiences in there, laugh out loud if you want, add some smileys, throw in some humor, and do whatever you want as long as you get the point across and the content is easily readable 5 things you might be doing that will hurt your list growth

You're too Timid
When you're writing something, you're putting yourself out there in a way similar to someone getting on a soap box and yelling "Hey! Look at me!". Now, I know it won't feel like that exactly becasue you're behind a computer screen, but it's similar lol. If you think you have something important to say, and you're passionate about it, then show it!

Stop hiding within your own words and express yourself. People want to see emotion within an article they're reading, they don't want to get bored because it seems like you're trying to please everyone. If you are trying to please everyone, you're still pissing someone off lol. It's impossible to please everyone, and as soon as you realize this, you will have better content going on your blogs 5 things you might be doing that will hurt your list growth

In Conclusion
These are just a few reasons your lists could be suffering. You need to stop being so timid, avoid any boring language, write great subjects, entice them to keep reading, and avoid using trite sayings in order to keep your lists growing. Now, I know that this list isn't a huge burden for you to work on, so I expect everyone to start churning out quality content that helps build their lists lol 5 things you might be doing that will hurt your list growth

I totally agree with you. Whenever I go into a site I always look forward to a great content. As I am a person who gets bored easily, I always look for an interesting subject and usually an interesting title catches my eye. If the content does not satisfy me, I go to another website. I don't waste my time with contents that bore me. Usually, I read only the first sentences and I'm out if its not interesting.

Same with me when it comes to the content. Even in forums, what I look for are interesting subjects of discussion. Why would I waste time when the topic is not interesting to me? It will just make me lose my balance that I may be posting something that is nonsensical or not substantial at all. I want my comments to be interesting as well and I just couldn’t make an interesting comment when the post is not interesting.

This article is right on point and very brutally honest! Aspiring bloggers should take down notes from this article. I like it how you point out that readers are so quick to get bored which is very true. In writinh you must know how to keep your readers locked in and stay tuned. Using timid and plain words makes it worst. A good article keeps its readers hooked at a break neck phase as if they would let go of the article until they finish it up to the very last word

These five things are really a welcome pointer to help us stop freezing out people from your list. It is funny about 'Avoiding it like plague'. I had thought it was just a language.

The article is a welcome relief. I need to set up a website and this will come in handy.

A good way to summarize this article is that if you aren't assertive, you will hurt your list growth. All the points stated above are all good points and could be avoided if we have something. That something is assertiveness. If you are assertive then you can't be lazy. If you are assertive then your visitors wouldn't be bored. If you are assertive then you'd do everything it takes to make it interesting.

Assertiveness is really a good communication skill to achieve your objectives. You're not playing it too safe nor complacent nor are you being aggressive. There's a lot of advantages to it including what you mentioned.

I agree completely about the fact that some people feel like they need to sound sophisticated when they write - and if anything, that turns me off their writing style! I feel like being approachable is key, and I much prefer things that are written like I'm having a conversation with someone. If your writing sounds too unapproachable it's likely that I've already tuned out.

I have the same thoughts too. There are some who is too conscious and concerned with their writing style to the point of self-promoting instead of communicating effectively with the readers. That level of sophistication is okay with newspaper articles or journalism but not on contents. People want to have information at a minimal time and feel you're speaking with them directly.

Being brave to write the things that we think that are necessary is one of the ways that we can keep things working out. I have come to realize that you can't always make this work especially when there are situations where the owner of a site is trying to be very careful with what they write.

This is so true my friend. In many instances you will find that a lot of writers fear to disclose their views for fear of being discriminated. However a lot of clients are always waiting to hear how their favorite writers think about the respective subjects.

The best articles are always those which can make a complicated subject understandable and exciting even for people who have no interest in that topic. It shows great skill to be able to write like that and also indicates that the writer have such a great mastery of the subject that he/she can explain it in simple terms.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
I will really admire someone who can do that because the complicated subjects or topics and those which we don't find interesting are the same ones will avoid reading. So if someone can get us to read and spend our time with those articles must have really good skills. They will need to capture our interest first and also maintain it and deliver by providing a well-thought and informative content.

Such writers are really rare so they stand out even more. We see a lot of websites try to draw our attention to topics we don't really care much about with the use of clickbait titles, only to get disappointed with the article. Good writers have titles that will pique your interest and continue to hook you in paragraph by paragraph, and by the end, you want to read more you actively seek out that writer's previous works.

I like your point about avoiding the use of boring language. It’s actually an issue I sometimes catch myself getting in to. I’ve always had to keep my writing very academic and to the point, so once I started expanding my body of work, I found it difficult to not sound so robotic.

A lot of people act like you need to sound like a professional at whatever you’re talking about, but the truth is that people don’t want just sophistication, but character as well. I’ve found that writing the way you’d speak helps a lot in adding some character to your work. Most of us don’t speak like we’re writing an academic paper.

I write a lot of blogs and one of the major requirements with such is for one to include humour in the writting. This cannot be simple at all times but its inclusion can mean that you get to engage the clients better.

What you write and how you write really have to go hand in hand. You have to capture and maintain the interest of the readers or they will quickly shit away without batting an eyelash. The ones given above are things you must do and must avoid in writing good content which doesn't stand on its own but must be adapted or done altogether. One way I think is to put ourselves in the shoes of readers and observe how contents or articles are written. We can do mental notes which ones are successful and which ones bored us or wasted our time. We can make use of the good techniques and avoid the tendency of writing boring subjects and ineffective writing styles.

I agree with "Your visitors get tired quickly" will eventually affects your services or business. Having your clients and visitors entices on your site will definitely increase the possibility of profit. Unless you create a site that is both informative and enticing, your clients and visitors will just be a passer by.

When you say the visitors get tired quickly that means there is something wrong with the web page he is reading. My take is either the bad design or the bad contents. When I say bad, it’s not really that bad but something not right. Like the contents, it can be not bad but not interesting and the reader will not be enjoying the contents when it is not well written especially for new writers. My take is that you just write the article straightforward and always think that you are not writing literature.

I agree on this article because I already experienced before such things wherein I leaved a certain site due to its inappropriate words used which makes it more boring and uninteresting to have. We should used as much as possible words that are attractive and express strong opinion without so much ado. It is mainly to attract more visitors on your site and makes it popular to everyone.

I appreciate your tips and I can say that this is very informative and helpful. It is true that you should keep on discovering ways to develop more of your writing skill. You must show creativeness in writing content for you to have more readers. A content must be informative that on the same time, it is entertaining. So that your readers will keep on reading and would want to wait for your new and other contents. Just always keep in mind to have some room for development.

It appears that the first few seconds the readers landed on your page are vital. They can already assess if it's worth their time and they will leave quickly. It's more than your way of words but the overall package of your content. It's a skill that can't be mastered overnight. Learning is one thing and being able to employ all these tips is what really matters.

Yes, the most crucial part is the introduction of your work because it will determine whether they will be continuing to read it or not. When the first few sentences of your work is not enticing enough they will surely not finish reading your work. You should really need to put an effort in writing your introduction to attract readers.

When I'm writing something I always read my work after completing it to know if It will not be boring to read. To make sure that it will not be an another bad article I will let my sisters read it. They are a very savage critiques but it is okay because I'm having a very honest review about my work. Then, I will rewrite my work again taking note their recommendations to my first draft.

You can really get the honest critique from people you know and although they will be very straightforward and less kind so to speak. Even if this is the case they have good intentions that's why it's worth putting value on their comments or suggestions. So before you allow others to read what you've written you can have them checked by people you trust. Much better from an expert.

I like how you explained your conclusion or the summary of your article for your topic. I strongly agree with how to explain why it is not advisable to put a boring language to your work as well as showing yourself too timid because it may cause for your reader to not getting what it is you want to convey to your readers. Also, people easily get interested if you put some emotion in your work especially if they relate with it. By that, you will also easily gain a little support from your readers. Well, the primary goal of the readers is to understand the context of your work and also to identify if it is the one they want to read or if it is suite to their taste.

One thing writers have to remember is the people in your mailing list may decide they no longer want to receive your emails if you no longer create content that interests them. When you start a blog you'll need to narrow down and choose a specific topic you'll be blogging about. Content you create will be about that one topic.

The easiest way to retain readers therefore is to give them exactly what you promised. All the time. If it is tips on how to lose weight you promised to send then never veer off and write about current events or anything else. That would make your email list shrink really fast.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
You are very right and I really agree with you on to give them exactly what you promised. In the first place, you are the one who give the topic or the idea to be tackled later and yet you talk about other things beyond what is supposed to be discussed. It feels like you are just doing a click bait. I have click on to different articles doing that trick and I'm very disappointed, how I wish they do what you have just said. By the way, the context of your comment is very on point.

True all about you just said. Always make sure to double check your list if its really good to discussed with what you have on your website. Better try first with your family, make sure men, ladies and teens can do the survey and let them hear what they can say about your website. Its better to hear these comments from your families and close friends first before other people and critics will give you the feedback about your site.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
Yes, because friends and families are the closest one and who you can approach and ask a favor easily. You will also have a QUICK feedback and suggestions from them so you can also modify your site right away. With that, you can show less mistakes to other critics who are unrelated to you.
