My hard drive crashed with warning

I just want to share this experience of mine about our desktop. I arrived late last night only to find our desktop acting up again. We already have noticed the noise emitted when we are accessing a big file. There is only 1 hard drive that contains the operating system Windows XP and the files. Anyway, when it didn't boot, we resorted to inserting the spare hard disk and installed an OS. Okay, it was up and running after an hour. And when we tested the internet, it was really scary because the browser can access selective websites only. This morning when I woke up, I realized that the default browser is the Internet Explorer of Windows. I installed Firefox and prayed that it will work. And it did. Congratulate me for that. The lesson is this - do not trust the installer of Microsoft because you may go astray. All the while I thought the connection was a problem with our internet provider. Oh well, sorry for this rant. I lost sleep because of the IE browser.

Well first off I'm sorry that your hard drive crashed. I had a similar thing happen to me while I was in college. For about a year I had been getting warnings that the hard drive was acting up but me being the broke college student that I was, I didn't want to have to spend money on another hard drive, so I just let it be for the time. Well, right as I was in the middle of an important video project, the darn thing just stops working, and I lost all my progress for that day. Thankfully I had a previous save backed up on an external drive so at least the whole thing wasn't lost.

But this is just another case of why Internet Explorer isn't reliable. I've had issues with it only directing to certain sites as well.

My computer crashed last year and since I had no backup I lost everything that I had on it. Obviously I learnt from this and I bought an external hard disk where I regularly back up my data.

I'm so sorry to hear that you had so much trouble because of Internet Explorer. I really hate using that web browser. For some unknown reasons It always slows down my laptop. I am currently using Google Chrome and I never had any problem with it.

Oh that is horrible. What are you going to do? This computer has a number of problems I wouldn't be surprised if that happened on here, but I do have a number of back ups so I do have that going for me! I hope you can resolve your issue. That must be awful!

I am very sorry to hear that this happened to you. It does sound weird that this happened. Did you spend a bit more time trying to figure out what the issue may have been or did you try to install the operating software from the boot CD straight away? Because if so that may have been a bad idea because it could have been a tiny issue that needed a much simpler solution.

I am sorry that your hard drive crashed. I have had a hard drive crash in the past and I know how bad it sucks when a hard drive crashes. I had super crappy DSl when my hard drive crashed and it tooks a week or more to get everything re downloaded on my PC. It was a literal living nightmare so I can only imagine what you went through.

Damn, didn't you have any backups made or? It has happened to me once before as well. It was completely randomly. One day I turned the computer on and it refused too. I took it to an IT guy and sadly the hard drive broke. I lost so much information and work and ever since I make regular backups.

I try and do at least one per week just so I feel safe. Losing your data isn't worth it.

I think a lot of people just forget to make backups which is probably why the original poster didn't have one. I mean, I wrote in a previous reply to another comment here that I was making a backup of some of the important files that I have on my computer and I just forgot to upload it to a different location. People are just too busy nowadays to remember everything so it's good to have some sort of an automatic process if you can do it.

I think everyone should own a external drive to make backups. I have a 2tb external, but these days hard drives are so cheap that you can get a 4tb hard drive for less than $150. I use my hard drive to backup my website and I back it up every 4 days.

Damn, did I just see IE browser there, damn you might have experienced some nightmares

. Back to the question, I think the drive has been corrupted, or it is not capable in capacity to handle the OS. And you didn't state the capacity of the hardware, so I will know what to tell you. But you should know that you can't expect a 90G hardware to run an OS smoothly, without experiencing hitches and windows data redundancy is quite hefty for the drive to handle.

I am always careful with my laptop and ensure that I delete any unwanted file totally from the system instead of stalking them up on the recycle bin. I learnt to manage my system that way to avoid such issues like crashing of the operating system.

It does sound bad to see the harddrive crashed. I am sure that there must be something happened on both hardware and software. And that is what led to the issue of the hardware crashed. I have seen that hard drive issues may lead to more or less of the data corruption. You should find out if there are some of the data recovery software around. And see if you can recover the data loss that happened with your data.

Those data recovery software are mostly garbage, they don't really guarantee you full recovery. And the worst of it all, is if you have already written any data into the hard disk, then the chance of recovering your data will be really difficult. But if you have not written any data to the drive, then your chance has really gone from none to slim.

Not true. I have found "PC Inspector File recovery" software to be working really good for myself. And there seems to be a lot of people having better results with the hard drive. I am sure you can find some good leads for other software. Not all of them are garbage. But some of the fake apps where they claim to recover are into this. Most of them I have not seen though. HopefullY i can see how that goes.

Well, I made that assertion due to the fact that most of the software I have used are either crap that can't find any thing or they are either showing you some files or pictures, you probably haven't sent your eyes on, but they can't find the one, you deleted of recent. I will try yours.

You're right with that assumption. There are some really bad software in the market. But software such as Norton ghost recovery, PC Inspector file recovery and few others are really good recovery software. And they can help with recovery of the restore point data. And it seems to be working good enough for many. I think on that context you can find some good out of bad software out there.

Yes there are some of the software which are fake. And they are only going to add some spyware. And that can be the thing about the such software we have to check again. And another option you can see that hard drive crashing is kind of normal these days. People are going to see that every now and then. I had a good experience with pc inspector file recovery. I tried recuva's file recovery software and it was bad.

Sorry to hear about the hard drive. My hard drive sometimes gives me the roaring sound, that is the time I have to shut down to let it rest for an hour. It has been roaring for a year now, my hubby said that it is boycotting for heavy usage. I did backup my important data to external hard drive so I have no worries about anything yet.

Sorry to hear your hard drive died. Computer problems are the worst. At least you had a spare handy. It would have sucked even worse if you'd had to wait 3 weeks for a new one to come.

Were you able to recover your files from your old hard drive. If so how did you do it? Recovering is a tedious process. Our tech guy did it for us when we faced that situations years ago.
Internet Explorer is the last browser I would ever go fo.

I was like who still uses internet explorer, when I saw it in the post, it is really the slowest browser I have ever used, some say a lot of improvements have been made, But I don't really care about testing it out though.
The browser's reputation has already been dented.

I have had a bad experience in the past when that was the only browser available. Chrome is my choice and I will not trade it for anything else. I have used other browsers too but I have now made my choice and i will stick to it.

I commiserate with the hard disk crash as this has also happened to me. It was horrible because I lost a lot of important files as not all of them were properly backed up. This has taught me to back up my files regularly. However, I'm confused with the OP's post when he/she claimed to install an OS and was surprised to find the next day that the default OS was Internet Explorer. Surely, if you install an OS, it's the OS that supposed to work on your PC. I certainly will not place the blame on Microsoft for that.

I had a repeat of what i experienced a few years ago just two days ago but this time my technician was able to retrieve all files. I was so relieved. It took hours for that activity. Atleast these days they have ways to retrieve files when they change the hard disk.

I'm glad that you are smart enough to get this your peculiar problem under control, it would have really been a serious problem had you lost the files on your hard drive, that would have completely ruined serious work for you.

I had one experience with my my external hard disk, and I actually lost all data I had on it, as I wasn't able to get it back to a functional mode.

You might think about moving on to Windows 7. Also your PC might be an older model? It sounds like you were infected with a bug previously, and considering you're on Windows XP. The version of IE you're running must be old and vulnerable to attack. Your hard drive could also have needed defragmenting or to be cleaned up with Win7 windows cleaner program. By the way, is your hard drive a SATA? SATA drives very rarely crash randomly. Any number of things could've caused this.

I agree with@judas2018 why are you still using windows Xp? That, in my opinion, is the whole problem. Microsoft does not support Xp anymore. Therefore they are no updates and that's why systems on Xp keep crushing because they can be attacked by bugs. Please update your system to at least Windows 7, otherwise, you will have the same problem again and again.You don't have to get another hard drive, you can upgrade your current one and upgrade to a higher version of windows that will keep sending you updates and keep your system from crashing.

Yup... back up is really important specially if you have important files on your system. Although there are times that backups are not on your to do list, there are lots of way to make sure that your files are safe. One example is having two or more partitions in a drive, this will separate the OS from the documents therefore giving you an option if your OS is corrupted. Another is having two or more drives in a system. I have three HDD in one system and they have different uses. One drive is for the system, the other is for files and the last one is for automatic back up.

Good thing you did everything you could to survived your desktop as early as that. We need to be more careful about our gadget especially laptop or desktop because aside from being expensive it is also our tool for working and other stuff.
