Why do I lose my internet connection when I start my laptop?

I am currently using Windows 10 and after installing some Windows updates last week I noticed that every time I start my laptop I lose the WiFi connection on all my devices. Then I have to restart my modem. I feel that this is because of the Windows Updates but I am not sure. Do you have any idea what might be causing this?

Do you get any sort of warning or pop-up in the lower right-hand corner before you lose your internet connection? Back when I still lived with my parents, I would sometimes get an I.P address conflict warning when trying to connect multiple devices, and this would result in everyone losing connection on every device. If that is possibly the issue, there are multiple things that need to be addressed in order to solve it, as different factors can cause this issue.

I get no warning in fact. It just gets disconnected. I got an idea after this post of yours. I have actually four devices connected to my WiFi. I will try to disable the WiFi on my other devices and start my laptop again and see if the problem persists. Thank you.

It typically shouldn't be an issue, but it can also depend on your wireless router's firmware. In most cases you should be able to connect as many devices as you want, and the only issue you might have is the internet connection slowing down due to lots of people using up bandwidth. But sometimes the computer or the router assigns the same I.P address to multiple devices, causing problems with the connection. I'm not particularly adept at solving connection issues, but a quick Google search has plenty of examples of similar situations, with answers from people who know far more. I hope you get your issue resolved one way or another.

That shouldn't be an issue, to be honest with you. I have a lot of devices connected to my WiFi and sometimes they will be all connected at the same time and we have never really had this problem before. It might be an issue with your update for Windows.

My laptop came with Windows 7 4 and since then, I have not bothered upgrading to a higher level since this serves me well. Probably, he needs to reduce the upgrade of his operating system.

That IP address warning also happened to me in the office when our internet connection was new. The tech said that the conflict was the duplicate IP address which means the dynamic assignment was in error. I really couldn’t explain it very well because I am not well versed with it. But it took weeks before the problem was resolved. That may be the same issue in this discussion.

I actually find it odd that it took weeks for the problem to be resolved. Back when I had this issue, I was still a teenager and I managed to find a solution for it just by doing some quick Googling. All it takes is opening the command prompt on a computer and renewing the IP address for that PC, or going into your adapter settings and changing the static IP address.

I would expect someone in the IT sector to know how to do this by heart, but they could have just Googled it and found the solution. The tech guy sounds a bit lazy, haha.

Not sure why you should lose your connection to the internet. That is strange I have never noticed windows updates affecting the wifi connection. Do you remember what update it was try going into your control panel and in programs/remove try looking for latest updates try remove them and see if that helps when you restart.

I can't remember about the updates. I will try to remove the latest updates. I hope this works. I am tired of restarting my router over and over again. Everything was working perfectly before I installed those updates.

If it persists after restarting the router, then you can restore your system back to the previous session, I don' know if they have that feature in windows 10, but try and check it helps in times like this.

I think this could be router or the network cable issue. Also it could be from the ISP side. You have to find out if this works from their end. If there is no issue on router side. And in such case find out faulty cables or connection. if that does not work. Then maybe it could be the issue on the Windows 10 side. Make sure you take help from the online guide. That way you can get them to understand this error and get it resolved.

I tried some of the tips the members suggested here and since I couldn't find a solution I called my ISP. They told me that everything seem to be good at their end and that the problem must be with the router. They will be sending some technicians over here soon. I hope that the problem gets resolved.

I think it should be from your internet provider.I don't think it from the window, I just updated my PC to window 10 and I'm not having this problem, the best bet is to bring in a technical expert to look into it.It might just be wrong or poor connections

I also think it is the Internet provider. Upgrading PC or windows does not affect the disconnection. Either the IP address is wrong or go check at forum sites to see similar problems .

In as much as it is possible that the issue of his unnecessary network disconnection mightbe from the network providers, I don't think it is right to totally rule out the effects of system updates. What is not an issue for you might affect another person.

I agree that it can be your internet provider. Or maybe there is something wrong with your laptop or with your update with windows as well. I remember mine have a problem, but I don't think it is any related to it but mine was, whenever I play games with my internet on and something buzzing sounds, the internet just go from connected to limited and I have to run truobleshoot everytime it occurs, I don't even know why.

Well, if it just started happening right after you updated your laptop to a newer version of Windows 10 then it is most likely that. I doubt that it's your internet provider or something similar. Windows updates are quite famous for messing things on your computer so I wouldn't be surprised. But it is hard to help you - I'd suggest going back a few updates and seeing if that fixes the problem.

I have issues with my DNS disconnecting all the time. They don't think it is a problem from the ISP side. My router is fairly new so that could be the issue. Maybe yours is to. There are steps online you can take to correct though if you google the issue. YOu should find something that would help.

If you have enabled System Restore, then your best bet would be to restore to a point before you installed that update. The only issue is that you may lose some files so if you created any new files/downloaded new files then just email them to yourself or upload them to a file storage site. I'm not sure why you are losing connection, to be honest. I have the latest Windows 10 update and there is nothing wrong with it.

I think one of the options to solve this problem completely is: go back to the original configuration (before the update you did). When you do the upgrade again (if you like), stay tuned during the process to see if you notice any irregularities during the upgrade.

You can also check with the carrier that offers the internet to you if there is any problem on the part of their service and it's nive to observe the places where you are using your laptop.

Try to disable the windows updates and the fire walls and the anti virus. See whether the wifi is still on. Also disconnect other devices first, you have to check which device or software that conflict with the wifi

That's a good point. Often the firewall and anti virus have the issues with the sockets. And that leads to the internet connection loss. I have seen this happening plenty of times with the laptop. So the socket issues are more or less virus issue as well. And one has to see if that can be fixed on their end. I personally think that he needs technical support now.

Of course, if you do this, make sure that you remember to enable the Windows updates, firewalls and anti-virus after you have figured out what the issue is. It would be awful for you if you didn't remember to re-enable the anti-virus and firewalls because you could end up losing a lot through a virus or getting hacked. Be careful!

Hmm, looks like this problems are one of the reasons I'm sticking with my Kali Linux machine. Well since you said you started experiencing this after you installed updates, then the problem might come from the updates. So it's either you tampered or altered the updating process and it didn't go well or complete very well.

I think this depends heavily on the country that you reside in. For us that in Nigeria, having weak network connection is part of the things we have gotten used to. So, try testing your network connection to know where the issue is really coming from to avoid that type of issue in the future.

In fact I called my ISP and some technicians came over to see what the problem really was. It turned out that my modem was faulty. Ever since they changed the modem I have not been having this problem.

Yes, It is most likely caused by the update that you ran in your laptop. This may either not compatible with your hardware so the laptop can't take and operate using that latest OS. Make a system restore and make sure to never make another update.

Sometimes, there are upgrades that doesn't go well with the system ioS but if that is not the case, then maybe you are having serious network issues. If it's proving difficult for you to handle on your own, I would suggest taking it to an expert to have it taken care of for you.

I was actually having some problem with my internet connection. I can't understand how the updates could have affected my internet connection. The good thing is that I have been able to resolve this problem. I contacted my ISP and they sent some experienced technicians. They did take some time to work on it. They also changed my router. I have not been having any problems ever since.

I remember many, many years ago finding out something most people don't know about Windows XP. If your copy of Windows XP becomes corrupted or just doesn't work right once you log on? You normally try and do a reinstall version where you don't lose all of your data. But in order for that to work properly, you have to disconnected your modem from your computer. Once XP is done with the install, then you hook it back in. Something about being online or plugged into the web while re-installing a copy of Windows XP, doesn't jive together. Causes a malfunction. Perhaps this same bug is still in play in Windows 10?

Your laptop is taking up too much bandwidth. This happened to me too when I used my mom's laptop. Whenever I switched on her laptop, my other devices could no longer connect to the internet. That was due to all the updates and other background activities running in Windows 10. The easiest solution here is to open network settings, select your wifi connection, and select "set as metered connection".

This will limit the bandwidth use of your laptop and will allow other devices to connect once more.

Probably you have experienced slow internet connections or, perhaps, you lose internet connections the moment you switch on your laptop, I can understand this as much. I have experienced the same situation at home with my laptop, though didn't figure out where the problem was initially. Later, I saw the cause of this when I visited a computer engineer to help me sort the problem out. He checked carefully and figured out that my window operating system has been outdated long ago and must be updated to start functioning well again.

It may be on your data speed, if you have 2 mbps speed of data and you have several devices connected on the router it may probably slow down your connection. For example if you browse a 10mb article it would take 5 seconds to load it with a single device connection, but if you have 5 devices connected to a router with the same event it would take 25 seconds for each device for a 2mbps data speed.

I am interested in this discussion because I bought a laptop which was to be installed with Windows 10. But upon delivery, the vendor told me that the operating system was downgraded to Windows 7 because Windows 10 has some unresolved issues with their laptop. And as of the latest, you said that it was your modem that was causing the disconnection. All right, problem solved. We have learned something. Thanks.

I think your laptop at risk. It might have virus. If you see that your internet connection has no problem them I would say that your laptop has high virus. Ask someone or bring your laptop to the technician.
