Poor website design but good quality of services and products

I haven't actually tried this one so I am hoping you guys could enlighten me about the possibilities of still getting customers and clients even if you have a poorly designed website but your services are really good and trustworthy. I have seen some websites who offer services or sell some products and the website/designs are in low quality but the feedbacks and reviews are very good despite the lack of enhancements and modifications of the website.

I used to ask myself how come they can't update or make their sites look pretty and catchy if they are doing good business? Does that mean people don't just look at the appearance anymore as long as the quality of the product or services are top notch?

If they have such a bad design/look of the whole website then I really wonder how they even attracted their clients in their first place when there weren't any good reviews yet? Perhaps through paid traffic... no clue but I wouldn't attempt to do this myself.

I really believe that if you have a nice design of the site, you increase the chances of getting customers or and more traffic. Let's compare though. Let's say there are two websites;

- one has amazing website design and great reviews,
- the other one has bad design and great reviews.

Which one would you pick? Poor website design but good quality of services and products

I think we'd all prefer the first option which proves that we do care about overall appearance. My point is, are the websites you're talking about in a very specific niche with low competition? Then they can get away with it.

How about bad design but highly recommended? Sure it looks bad or not pleasant and catchy but if it gets the job done and it does more than expected, we wouldn't complain, would we? But yeah, of course having a good quality website would really get more views.

You are right though - probably they have paid traffic. But still, it's their own way of promoting their website.

This reminds me of one site that have interesting products but the literature is not detailed as if it was soliciting a comment for the question in my mind. The design was standard and ordinary though but I felt like it was an attempt to trick me in getting comments so I exited that site. Until I remember that gimmick because it may not be ethical but in a sense it is one good way of getting more traffic.

I do not think so that anyone would look up for a poor designed website that put them off at first glance. The traffic must had come from external sources, maybe social medias or forum sites. However, in order for a website to succeed, a moderate quality , designed website with user friendly buttons are compulsory.

People "don't just look at the appearance anymore"?? Uumm ... I would not go so far as to say that. But! Anybody who is looking for a good product or good service shouldn't and probably wouldn't just click on a website and go "Nope! It's ugly! Don't want to know anything else!" Poor website design but good quality of services and products

These days there's Yelp and Angie's List and all kinds of sites that share reviews. It's easy for people to do research. Sometimes and this may sound weird, but if the company provides a top notch product or service, after a while that "bad website" sort of becomes a recognizable badge. Word of mouth advertising? People start directing other customers by saying: "Just look for the ugly website!" Poor website design but good quality of services and products

It may not be the norm but if gets the job done and has a lot of positive reviews and feedbacks, why not right? People nowadays tend to go for whatever gets the job than and if possible, more than expectation. So probably the dudes who are selling their services don't have time to beautify their sites. Maybe most of their traffic came from word of mouth. If they have a quality product and people like it, they will be likely to give it a good review. People who have great products can get some traffic even if they don't have the best caliber websites. I think it happens all the time. However, it is best to have both of course!

Most probably. I mean, that is probably the main reason why a lot of people are still patronizing their products and services despite the appearance of their website. Probably that site is just a reserve of them. They probably have a main advertising website.

Well, I've asked myself that same question. To be honest, I think a lot of it has to do with the niche. A straightforward business product/service doesn't need a fancy designed website in order to help make the sale and attract potential new customers. Though some can be rather basic and dull, yet still produce quality leads and good data feedback.

Personally, I like to have the website's design match the content displayed, along with the product/service equally. That way all the components involved evenly support each other. Instead of it being one sided. You don't need a good quality website in order to succeed in facilitating sales for your product/service. Although it certainly helps the campaign in general!

Yep. We all love that - a website design that matches the content displayed. But not everybody does that now specially those people who aren't even making much from their services or products but still has to keep moving on since it is their only way of income. Then there are those who don't give a crap about designs because they are too busy polishing their products or services.

If members of your target audience have already heard of your products and services from other sources, and are convinced and ready to buy from your website, the design of the website might not be that important. Just provide them an easy way to place an order. Just the other day, I saw a website which consists of nothing but a few product images and affiliate links. And the owner says that he is making money out of it. Turns out that he promotes the products on social media, and directs them to the website when they are ready to buy.

It's all about the reviews, feedbacks and recommendations from other people specially from the ones who have really done it. But I think today it would be kind of hard and challenging unlike having a well modified website with good quality theme and photos.

Good design and good quality services and products both are important to drive sales. However, if you cannot have a good design because you don't have skills or budget to do it, you should stick with good services and products. After all people don't come to your website for design, what they are looking for is quality services and products. However, goog design will of course make them stay on the site for some time.

True. But in this case, the entrepreneur has the budget clearly because he is earning a lot judging from the number of positive reviews and feedbacks he receives from his former clients and newer ones. So I guess there are still people who prefer to have lame designs. And there are also people, as what you've said, who prefer to have good services and not care about the design of the website.

There could be number of reasons... Some of them have sales going anyway so they not paying attention to catchy design because they are happy with what they get by selling. Probably catchy reasonable prices keep them going. Some other reasons may be possible too but to be honest some people want to keep website as simple as possible.

Some time ago i had customers who wanted new website with old looking design, so it could be very very simple and looking like made in 90's Poor website design but good quality of services and products

I said it could turn away some potential customers away, but he explained that his customers mostly going to be 60 - 70+ years old and they are looking for simplest possible navigation, design and product descriptions... After few months i realized he was totally right about it Poor website design but good quality of services and products

I think it all encompassing, whatever one has to do,it must be done well.Maybe those with poor designs but with the volume of traffic could just be sheer luck.I don't get putting a good wine in a damaged bottle.
So if one's need good traffic to drive sales despite good products and services I think the design of the blog should be appreciative as well.

Some of the time the website design is very much important. And as you can see the issue with the website design is that people have to think of. Often it is the product that matters. So one has to consider how the design of the website needs to be adjusted in that case. So poor design does not mean the people are going to have poor service too. That sort of logic never works out today.

I'm not saying ugly sites can provide a good service or products but I do think the appearance in a website is the key to get a lot of traffic and to actually LOOK trustworthy! I don't want to risk my money into a really crappy looking site when I got one that's so much better design and actually look trustworthy. These days apperance is all and that includes websites too...

If the website design is poor then it will be difficult for the company to attract customers. There are some websites which are in no way user friendly and I try to avoid using such sites. However, there are cases where the website design may be poor yet the company can attract customers. This can happen if the company has been in the market for a very long time and is well known, if there is a monopoly situation, the company offers discount, they offer good customer service and members have requested others to join the website.

It could be that the blogger has first built a group of people he has gathered from an online writing site before he finally has a blog site. So, the not so good appearance and design are sidetracked.

For myself, I don't judge a blog with its appearance actually. I would see what it can offer by my being there. And if I see it to be a good site where I can get good tips and suggestions then, I will surely be a regular of the blog.

I guess they base their site on references and people who have already used their services. For a site to attract people it needs to have a good design and UX that attracts people, otherwise everyone will be put off by the hideous theme.

I can see how poor web design would initially keep me from exploring the products and services of a potential new site. If I knew of the site through word of mouth or through personal networking, that might be one thing, but if it is a brand new one for me, and I have just encountered it, its appearance and design, if poor, might drive me away before I give its business a real chance. Just being honest.

I think poor web design can turn off potential clients because some clients who know about web designing will not find poor designed webs professional and they will think that the reviews might be fake as well, I also think that As long as they have good reviews and provide good services then some clients will not care about the structure because they don't understand much about coding and whatever that goes with it all they will need is to be able to use the website friendly and then access the services, So for a business to look professional and trust worthy we need to invest in attractive themes and keep our webs up to date.

The design and appearance of your website are extremely important nowadays. A few years ago, it was the content that mattered but now apparently is as important. If your website doesn't look modern or doesn't look appealing then people may decide to not continue browsing it. You may end up losing potential sales and customers and that could become a very big problem in the long-term. It's not difficult to have a well-designed website nowadays because of the thousands of pre-made templates available and content management systems that make building a site extremely easy.

They maybe have a very excellent copywriter that writes very enticing copy in their websites. Their contents are really compelling and could convince that the products or services they offer is really necessary for those who able to see it. Or maybe their products/services has been tested and proven that whatever benefits they promise are really true. And those who experienced their products/services creates and review or just even leaves a good comment that helps to promote to other people.

You are like telling us the proverb of the carpenter. That he makes good houses but his own house is not good. When you are confident that your service is good then why not take the effort to spruce up the design of your website? Take note that it is not exactly the service that you are identified with. The website is your business card so if you have a nice business card, that will certainly attract attention. That is applicable to the so called walk ins that are usually the result of search engines. Of course, a good design of your website will be the magnet to hook those walk-in visitors.
