Buying and Selling domains: Is it still profitable?

Although you can always put any website behind a domain, it will still take a lot of time in generating the content which you may need for it to be profitable on which it can potentially attract visitors. When we buy domain names, you surely need to invest into it. It may cost you up to a hundred dollars more or less - which you must try to earn back and also try to profit a little ( or a lot ) upon selling it. Of course, the selling price should always be higher than the cost when you registered it.

This sort of strategy has been famous for quite some time now and I am curious though, is it still good to invest nowadays on such practice?

I have paid for a whole bunch of domains which I only sold one so far. But there are many sites out there which allow you to sell domains or websites. Making them popular first is a good start to create more authority on the domain its self. Which I am working on doing on a few popular domains of mine.

I have a freelancer friend who also invested in some domains but he is now beset with loans that he couldn’t pay. He thought that domain flipping is that easy but in the actual game it is hard to sell a domain. Perhaps it is easier to sell a website because it is already operational and has contents to speak of while a domain is just a name. So how can you popularize a name? It is just like an address of a vacant lot and nothing more.

There are actually plenty here. If you just try to read some of the posts and comments here, you will notice that they are giving the name of the sites who offer buying and selling domains.

I heard that you need to buy domain names that are short and catchy, dot com would be preferable. If other sub domain, very hard to sell, might as well turn it into a niche website

Dot coms, dot nets, and dot orgs are the most famous domains nowadays and they sometimes cost a lot depending on what the contents are. But yeah, probably atleast 10 or 15 characters would be acceptable excluding the Ws and dot coms though.

I am familiar with the whole concept of domain flipping but I think that it used to be far more profitable than it is right now. The problem was that it used to be not so common to do this... not many people were aware of how much easy money you can make and therefore didn't use it. Once the word spread, everybody jumped on the train and started domain flipping.... so the market is a bit saturated right now.

However, it is still possible to do it but it might take more ''creativity'' and knowledge. You need to know what will sell and what won't. If you buy a domain and don't end up selling it, you only lose money.

I never had much luck selling a website that was new. The buyers always wanted to know how many people use the website, how much traffic was going to the website on a daily basis, how much profit the website had, etc. So I decided instead of selling websites, why not create the code that makes the website operate the way it does. And this is what I do. I have made a pretty penny doing exactly this, selling PHP scripts. However, a lot of the times people want to start doing the same thing but do not know much about coding and it creates this type of issue where the script is of poor quality and it really hinders programmers especially if you are freelancing. These type of 'coders' usually sell scripts for like $10 just to get quick sales, and then buyer usually ends up removing the script because it's basically crap.

This is somewhat how I feel about cheap websites. I do not believe any quality was put into them and the seller just wants to make fast cash. Real cash takes time, energy, sweat, and tears. So if you are selling websites, please make sure it's quality. Remember folks, quality is better than quantity. And with that in mind you may have repeat business!

There are plenty of people on flippa doing this for everyday earning. You can find that some of the people on the domainpros also doing this as a day job. So it can be a good earning. You just have to find out the good rate. Also you have to establish good domain strength. That's how you can easily promote your content to others. I have seen some people making some good money out of domain sales alone. If the domain is properly developed with blog then even more money.

This business is definitely profitable. However, you need to put in time and effort to make your domains sell-worthy. Patience is required for newcomers as selling domains are not exactly guaranteed. Take time to create quality websites to ensure they appeal to potential buyers.

I am holding many domains since two years. I registered these domains for the sole purpose to sell them and make money. When these domains were expiring, I renewed them. On some domains, I have invested more than $45 for registration and renewal. If I have to sell these domains I need to ask more than I have spent on them. sadly, I have not found a single customer for my domains. I have used services such as sedo and flippa but I have not been able to sell a single domain.

What do you think is the problem why no one is buying your domains? Could it be the cost? Or the content? Have you tried expanding your search for a good domain market?

I think it is still profitable because if you have a good domain or for what that someone is needing then you can sell it with high price. I bought some domains with $$$ and it is really worth for developing website so I don't care how much it was.

I know of someone who created website after website. They were actually forums that I get invited to join. That’s how I knew of his business style when it comes to selling domains. When the forum is already up and running with a few contents but with a semblance of an active forum, he would sell it with the promise to help in getting new members to the forum. I guess he is earning money from that scheme because he is still around and still creating new forums.

It was relatively easier for people to make profits from buying and selling domains in the past but everything does have its time.

While in the past people could have been desperate to get the perfect .com domain for their sites, that isn't the case anymore. If you want a catchy domain name and it's taken even if you don't get the .com domain, there are numerous other domain extensions to choose from.

Nonetheless since there are people who might be keen on obtaining specific domains it still possible to profit from buying and selling domains but you won't make as much money as others did in the past.
