Should SSL certificates be enforced?

I'm not sure if everyone is aware but you can actually get a SSL certificate for free from LetsEncrypt. The only downside is that you have to renew the certificate every 3 months but considering how much money it actually saves you, it is great. Because of this, I think hosting sites should force users to use SSL with their sites because it makes everything safer. Considering Google now punishes sites that don't use SSL as well means it is good for site owners to have SSL. What do you guys think?

Of course, I am using LetsEncrypt for my websites and it is free, just some clicks from your hosting control panel and you could enable it for using.

I think hosting sites should force users to use SSL with their sites because it makes everything safer

It depends each website owner, if they like using SSL then they will go with it.
I don't think hosting sites can force their users to use SSL.

Considering Google now punishes sites that don't use SSL as well means it is good for site owners to have SSL.

Google doesn't punish sites that don't use SSL. You should research this information before saying everyone about this.

The current approach of not having SSL could lead to unsecure forums and the sites having unprotected scripts too. So it's worth noting that if you have protected scripts and want to use SSL. That would bring the site more credibility. So I think people should go for the SSL. You can use the Let's encrypt SSL in that case. You can get it for free from the hosting company that you have.

Great post, Cool iTommy I didn't know you could get them for free I been paying for them lol. Cheers for the information will check it out right now.

The thing is if you don't have SSL most sites always say not secure one of my sites doesn't support SSL and always says unsecured even tho it is 100% secure.

I believe that they should be. Internet security is already pretty bad as it is and websites that don't use the SSL certificates don't truly care about their customer's safety. I really think that all e-commerce businesses NEED to have SSL. Customers care about it and so should you - especially if you want your clients to trust you. I don't know why some businesses still aren't using SSL when it's so easy to set it up. It also protects all of the internal data. Therefore, it should be a must.

I don't think hosting sites really want to have that much more on their plate than they already have. I think SSL is a good thing, and that it should be enforced, but I don't think there's enough upside for hosts to enforce it.

Having SSL certificate is good for your site, especially if you provide products and services to your visitors/Clients. They will feel more comfortable, to purchase from you knowing their personal information is secure and encrypted. So SSL is a must for any website that wanted to protect their customers.

SSL certificates shows users that you mean business. They'll know that you value their security and they'll trust you more.

I do not know if it is a factor in your Google results rank though.

I have reviewed this question and the answers thoroughly. I am of the opinion - its' can only be an opinion as I don't have enough knowledge to provide an expert answer - but I am of the opinion that SSL Certificates should not be enforced or forced.

I reviewed the link shared by aqibarif74 and I didn't get the impression that Google was "punishing" webmasters for not adopting HTTPS, but rather encouraging people to convert.

I agree with itommy in that it should be a choice.

There are bazillions of websites that are HTTP instead of HTTPS. I think this is a transitional period. It's not as easy as "Oh just switch from HTTP to HTTPS!" I created a blog and in the dashboard I was given the SSL option. All I had to do was check the box. But there was also a note that said "In case your website started acting screwy, just uncheck the box." That tells me that it's not that simple to make the change. Should SSL certificates be enforced?

It is good to know about LetsEncrypt, especially that it is free. It is an item on my "To Do List". Perhaps if I use it my website won't start acting screwy! Should SSL certificates be enforced?

Understood. I wasn't referring specifically TO you. I was referencing the language or wording that was utilized to initiate this discussion. Sorry if you took offense. Wasn't aiming AT you. Should SSL certificates be enforced?

If I can get it for free, why not get SSL certificates through LetsEncrypt? Thank you for this information. Personally, I think the SSL certificates should only be required for websites where people have to key in sensitive or financial information. Though Google isn't directly punishing websites without SSL as many of you believe, I find it odd that they are shaming websites without https with the label 'not secure'. For first time users of the site, that can be a disincentive or discouragement for accessing the site.

SSL certificate should be reinforced on websites that process sensitive information.You don't expect me to renew an SSL certificate on a website a created for my dog.It should be made compulsory to website that requires personal information.
SSL certificate helps users see that the connection is secured so they can trust your website or blog.Moreover, Goggle lowers your ranking if your site is not secured.It should be encouraged and not reinforced or rather reinforced to sites that requires personal information of users.

SSL certificates are a good way to help your websites be secured from outside attacks. I am not aware that we can get free SSL from that website you have mentioned and if it's true, then I've better try it out also for my website to be secured. But I think, Google doesn't punishes websites without SSL but it is a great factor really to help increase your site's visibility.

Thanks for your query. I do not know or I do not think SSL certificate should enforce on Google for ranking factor or other. But, who do not appreciate good things. As security purpose SSL site more secure for anti spam and anti various. Today I obtain an SLL certificate for my website smmlikeview.com and before getting this certificate always notify on my browser this is in secure site and do not put any payment or personal information there. But, after having this, it is now showing safe and secure. Here I understand, for business concern SSL certificate also help to client for secure and safe payment. I do not have much more information, what is internal function.

I will put it to you like this, LetsEncrypt is free and it makes most people feel like the website is safe. Because the first thing someone does is look for the lock if they feel like the website isn't safe. And with all of the recent credit card hacking going on, it's a no brainer to make people feel safe!

Are you sure with that statement that Google is punishing sites with no SSL? What if my site has no SSL, would it be sanctioned by Google that my site will not rank in the Google search list? Pardon me for this contrary opinion but I don’t think Google will employ that bias for SSL. Even if Google owns the SSL copyright they will not force it on our throats.
