How to rank for google images?

I'm planning to create a website based upon images, there users or I can share posts, quotes, poems, images and etc. Now my question is how would I be able to rank the images in Google for their keywords? What are the factors behind the image rankings on Google?

Normally, I used to rank for keywords and never had experience to rank an image. I need some help on this.

Ah, that's a bit more complicated and more time-consuming SEO than the normal, website ranking one. That's why I'd like to refer you to this great ''how to'' article that was written by the one and only Rand Fishkin - the co-founder of Moz. On the link, you will find everything extremely nicely explained and he even guides you through the process with a video. If you watch and read that you will have no problems! ;)

Thank you for sharing that link which can be an additional knowledge for us. With the ranking of images not only by Google but also by other search engines, my take is the keywords because I don’t know how the crawlers would rate the images per se because I don’t think there is a way to evaluate the pictures on the web page. Maybe the crawlers will just rely on the keywords that the images were tagged with.

Few things matters:
It must be a unique image
Keyword centric image name (the file name you use for saving the image on your comp) keyword phrase in which the words separated by hyphen
Use phrase containing target keyword as Image Title (option to give a title to image is available with Wordpress CMS)
Add Alt Text description to image....best to give the target keyword
Having Keyword as text on the image have some advantage.

Why needs to be unique image because I saw more same images but they are being ranked well on Google.
I don't know what is the reason after this.
Maybe they used some special SEO methods for that.

Keywords inside the photo name always helps. Also some people make different folder in their host. And they sort the images based on the niche. For example food images inside the food folder etc. So you can see it helps google to sort the images properly. And as you can see that images can easily get indexed and more people click on relevant images to the keyword, it helps get more traffic. I think it takes time for ranking images.

So, I should create proper folders and putting images into them?
I saw and checked some sites that having good rankings for images but all their images are being putted in a same place, for example, images folder.

Yes, rankings of pictures and things like that are something that I know little about. It is just one of the options that we have. It is just one of the things that I need to learn about to have an effective blog and get a good ranking. I will read the above article with interest.

Thanks but I would like to get short tips than reading long articles because I don't have more time for articles.
Just curious, after you read it, what points you will want to share to everyone?

Yes, right keywords for the images do help to get into the rank. Besides that you need external traffic which depends on the niche of your images. I would recommend you to try uploading images that are related to How to. Most people are keen to know how to fix or do something but instructions alone are not sufficient. This is where how to images come in and gain more traffic in the Google rank.

Hi there,
Thanks for your query. Google always insist on good quality of content. If you made any image base website, I think SEO term will not change for your image base site as well. You must to follow on-page SEO rules for your site. I mean meta title and meta description with good niche for each pages. Specifically when you upload any image, you must to use image alt tag for each image. Usually google do not detect any image without using tag. So, for getting google result for search ranking, you must to use image alt tag and description and title too.

And other SEO term you need to follow for off-page SEO and on-page SEO.

Thanks for your advice and to be honest I tried alt images but I tried to find my image on Google search but they didn't appear there as on top of image search. I think there are somethings to need to do to have an image high ranking on search results but I still don't find out it.

If this is not a trick question then I am really confused. But in fairness to me, I have read in one discussion that images in the webpage also can give some points to the search engine capability of the site. But with an image to get a ranking in Google, I guess I am lost on this discussion. I just don’t know if the image is plain image or if there is a word that is embedded within the file name of the image. Sorry if I am not making sense.
