How important is advertising?

We all know that it is tough at the start to get people to visit your site, join it or even comment on different discussions. So we tend to advertise on different platforms to try and attract people to the site. But is advertising the only important factor for a site? I think the problem that a lot of people don't realise is that advertising is not the most important thing, they need to make sure that their users actually enjoy the website. They need to make sure that the content on the site is of the highest quality and actually interesting to read. What do you guys think?

Yes,quality and design is the key for success.
That way you will attract visitors,and then start monetization.
Once you set your advertising spaces,you have to assure you won't disturb visitors with unskippable ads or pop-up.
I would recommend banner ads,placed into a visible spot.
I tend to get out from any website with ads that cover the necessary content,although the website looks professional.
So focus on quality&quantity,then after you create a traffic,enable monetization.

I wouldn't say that advertising is the only important factor for a site (or even the most important one), but it's definitely in the top five. In my opinion the key thing would be the way your site looks when the users first get there - after all, what's the point of ads if people are just going to turn away? Setting up your site so that it looks interesting while still maintaining levels of user-friendliness so that people can jump in right away and get involved is going to be more important than advertising. Once that's set, advertising is going to be the right place to focus.

Having content to start with is important. As for advertising, it is a little important depending on how well you want your site to be. For example, if there is no traffic because it is a new website then yeah it is slightly important if you want your site to be noticed.

But if you got good content and are receiving traffic I wouldn't say it is that important it is only necessary to gain more traffic or want to be more popular if it is a business site than many do advertise.

We had one subject in college about advertising. That business becomes easier with the help of advertising. Without advertising, the business can only reach the nearest potential customers and with advertising, the business can reach far and wide. The lesson in that college subject included the aesthetic presentation of a product and the way you would sell the service. And after that, the most important part is how you advertise - posters, billboards, barker (during my college days, the barker is a popular way of advertising). But now, I guess online advertising is getting to be the standard.

I think advertising is more important for small business than big business.
Small business need to advertise in creative ways to create word of mouth referrals. I like seeing a car with lettering or a life-size fiberglass replica of a giant crab advertising a mom and pop store. Little league sports are maintained by small business and thus creates loyal customers for life.

The advertising is very important for my website, it helps increase traffic to my website and from there, I can get sales.
If I don't use advertising then I don't have more choice to promote my sites, beside SEO then it needs more time but with advertising, I can get immediately traffic to my sites.
Honestly I spent hundred of dollars for advertising on forums and social networks, some worked for my site but some didn't. But the problem is I could know advertising is effective for increasing traffic for my sites.

Very, very important. Good content/service with no advertisement is extremely hard to keep running. I've seen several people who had much better content than me get fewer views simply because they didn't have the patience to promote their content. Always give yourself some time to promote your own work, it pays off in the end compared to those without promotion.

On revisiting this discussion, I wanted to comment that I DO believe that advertising is very important, for all parties and businesses involved in online ventures, but, I must wholeheartedly admit, when I come across a site or blog exploding with more ads than good content, I immediately turned off, and most likely will not return.

I am going to throw this out there again, I know a guy who spent $60k on advertising and paid forum posting and his forum went nowhere. So even if you have a huge advertising budget your not guaranteed success. And I know a lot of people believe in this theory and spend lots of money on advertising to make nothing in return.

If you ask my honest opinion high quality content is the best advertising method there is. Write a nice 2000+ word article and submit the link to twitter and if its good enough you will get retweets and that's 100% free advertising.

You are right that the big budget for advertising is not a sure way to success for your business. This reminds me of one local movie where the producer has so much money that his intention was not to earn but just to set the record that his movie was seen by a million viewers. What he did was to advertise his movie on tv every day in major tv networks plus the ads on printed media. Not to be content, he also slashed the cinema tickets to 50% discount for the students.
