Can a brand new social network enter the market?

So we all know about the big social networks: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. But do you think there is still space in the social network market for a new site to come along and be as popular or atleast be a threat to these big 3? Or are the barriers to entry too high for any new site to even attempt to try and enter the social network market?

I think right now social networks like Facebook and Twitter are dying a bit with their user base growth slowing down. Because of this I think there is potential for a new entrant to become a threat if it is able to offer something unique. When Snapchat entered the market, no one really thought it would do well but it offered something unique and now the big social networks like Facebook and Instagram have started copying its unique stories feature

There is alway's room for others it is what makes the competition so great. Yeah, sure Facebook is the most talked about and the only way to do better than Facebook is to go beyond Facebook. But not as easy as it sounds unless you got unique skills to make programs and promotion skills out there. But anything is possible it is not "Impossible" so who knows.

Do you have plans for new social network website, I not long helped a friend with a social network script which I own. He is still editing it and making changes but he needs major work on it if he wants to have a site like a facebook.

You need to remember that Myspace was the place to go for social media before there was Facebook Can a brand new social network enter the market?

Now Facebook is much much larger than MySpace ever was, but that's because they're always innovating and purchasing more systems and services in order to increase the happiness of it's users. It's gotten so large that it works with government agencies, something that MySpace never did when it was in it's prime, or at least I think.

To make it big in the social media platform game, you need to always be innovating and cutting edge while giving away everything for free. You need to get the ball rolling and get a few hundred thousand members before you can even think of getting any sort of private investors attention. You'll definitely need a private investor to work on this scale because you're going up against billion dollar companies, and the investors have the money you don't. The only downside to this is that a big private investment firm may turn you down simply because Facebook is your main competition in this type of game. They will see it as an up hill battle and may not want to invest while other companies may want to throw millions at you lol. This is why I say you need a lot of users prior to going for an investor(s). It's because they want to see traction and growth and not just an idea of what you plan on doing. You could easily get a small investor in after you get everything designed and scripted, but you're likely going to get less than $15,000 to push your website. And if you mess up, you ruin your credibility, which is never a great thing to have follow you online Can a brand new social network enter the market?

Was it MySpace first? or Friendster? I have used Friendster before. It was messy but it was cool, as a teenager that is. I have used MySpace later than that.

Sure, there's a big space for all the eagles to fly but it the eagle that stays up that wins. For Social media to stay up and remain relevant you must be highly creative and innovative to upturn an already existing platform. So yes another platform can do well and much better if the platform offers more than the existing platform.

Hi Darth, I think there is always space for more than one socialize media on Internet. Internet is huge and there is plenty of information and sites that we vene don't notice that exist. There is something else that it must worry on someone who tries to introduce a social media on Internet and that is: the cost, advertising, the platform, the features, maintenance costs, and the cost on getting more and more members!
A simple way it would be to make a get paid to socialize site, you would gain a lot of members in no time.

I think that there is always room for new social media platforms. Just wait a few more years and you will see new ones entering the race and possibly even beating the big boys such as Facebook.

Instagram and Snapchat are great examples. When they initially launched nobody took them seriously. They didn't see them as real competition now look at those two. They grow every day and they are reaching new levels of popularity.

I agree with Razzy though. You can't expect to have a realistic shot without a lot of money/funds. You have to understand to even begin trying to compete with such social media sites, not only do you need an outstanding idea (fresh, new, unique) but you also need the backing of others, such as investors.

Yes, actually you can still add a few more of these social media network. Before social media is just a tool to help you express you thoughts. Now it's everything else. With out social media, some of the entrepreneur that we have now might not even exist. Meaning it's a new gateway to success.

There will always be room for competition. However, a big mistake for any startup would be to try and compete with the giants like Facebook. It would do well to focus on a particular demographic like what Tencents is doing in China. That's not to say, it should have a local view but in order to grow and expand out, secure a part of the world first.

There would always be room for more thy kingdom come. People will keep saying oh, the market is saturated bla bla bla and so on. We were here when facebook started, there was HI5 and myspace as at then. If facebook had been considering them, they wouldn't have made any giant stride. And then we have tinder, twitter and all sort social media sites which came after facebook and with good traction. If they were considering facebook they wouldn't have been where they are today.

Hi DarthHazard I never think any of other social network site will notplace over this big three Social networks like facebook, twitter or linkedin. The world is rising and competitive also. I think google never think for stay log in behind of this three. G+ never be more less popular compare with big 3. This is my opinion and I think so. who know facebook or twitter will come this place before they launch? It was not per before. Many other social network site was dominate before coming face book or twitter. May be there based was few different or think was different.

So, still I feel any of other social site will take placeanytime may be or may be not. We have to wait and see and it may depend on time consuming.

I personally think that social media is based off of trends. All it takes is for a new platform to offer something that no other platform has offered. And "bam" the next big thing. That's what happened with snapchat and vine, and now they are currently a couple of the newest and most successful platforms. Even though vine got sold to twitter.

Unless they come up with something new it's going to be pretty hard to break into the mainstream. There's always room for more social networks but they need to offer something that isn't already present on the other sites, which can prove to be difficult at the moment.

There is always room for more social networking sites however with the competition being so high from sites such as Facebook, Linked In and Twitter it's going to be difficult bringing something unique to the table that has not been done before. I am not saying that if someone came out with another social networking site it would not work but they would have to be superior to the competition for people to want to use them. Facebook right now seem to have a lot covered so finding something unique and different would be a task.

What we saw in the short history of social media networks, innovation is the name if the game. When i created an account in Friendster, I was surprised to learn that the purpose is just to have friends in the list. No interaction of any kind. Just a friend request and that's it. Obviously it was not interesting. When Facebook came along, it focused on interactions and later with photos then videos. The enhancement is a continuing process that's why Facebook now has 2 billion users. For a new entrant, I guess they have to learn being creative like what Facebook does.

The thing is, for a new social network to pop up onto the scene at this point and somehow manage to thrive, it's going to take a whole new level of innovation. This is kind of a problem with a giant like Facebook around, because Zuckerberg has the kind of money that leads an industry when it comes to innovation. They are going to be on top of anything that has potential, either creating it themselves or buying out those with the ideas. I don't think Facebook is remotely comparable to MySpace or other old social networking sites, as they are playing at a completely different level.

Yes of course. After facebook came tinder, twitter and all sorts. And they are doing good. Just look for a narrow niche to fix your idea. Social media is broad, check what next can be done and in what way.

It's possible. However, the marketing and tech team will need to work hard. This new social network has to come with new and unique features to appeal to the current market.

Yes! Although it will be very hard to break into the mainstream. It is possible if you narrow your focus on specific needs or people. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google + and many other social networking sites all have their specifications. So if a social network come up with something different than the other, it will definitely stand.

Can a brand new social network enter the market? Answer. Ask Pinterest. I remember when they were the "new kid on the block". And guess who else is trying to get into social networks? Amazon! I read something the other day about a social network called Amazon Spark. Don't know much more than that, but I'll bet they're aiming to break down a door to this market.

Wow, amazon is really catching up huh. Never expected them to be doing the social media trend too. But would it be successful though? I'm already thinking that if they really do have a social media, it will then be filled with amazonian ads. Can a brand new social network enter the market?

I agree with you and I was thinking the same thing when I saw the headline. Here is a more current article from TechCrunch. I'm going to keep up with this new service. I'd like to know where it's heading.

Amazon launches Spark, a shoppable feed of stories and photos aimed at Prime members

Haha right. I will read this later. If ever they will be successful, it would be a great news for most of the SEO enthusiasts because of another opened opportunity. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

That's not impossible but it can be a bit difficult as this new social network site will have to complete with established sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I remember that there used to be sites like Hi5 and Myspace but then with the coming of Facebook many people stopped using those sites and joined Facebook. However, for this new social network to be successful it have will to provide very good services and the features must be exceptional.

Before facebook and twitter, there were already numerous social networks. Long bfore facebook was launched I already was on hi5. However, facebook and Twitter knocked down most of the old social networks. After facebook and twitter became popular, many social networks arrived in the market. Until now they have not killed facebook and twitter, but they are giving fierce competition. These days facebook and twitter are being used by people in the age group of 45-55 years, however, new platforms such as Pinterest is being used by young people. There is always a room for a new social media, however, it should come up with a better service.

You reminded me of Friendster. It was the first social media that I have experienced and it was there before Facebook came around. The scheme and design are almost the same with Facebook’s design but Friendster has no interaction. It is just a collection of friends and nothing more. I don’t remember posting on Friendster because the usual chore is just to send a friend request and that’s all. When Facebook came around, Friendster lost most of its users and it closed shop.

I was not on Friendster, however, I heard of this site long before I came to know about facebook. I started with hi5. I had a friend in Australia, he sent me an invitation to join hi5. Since it was easy to connect with him through social site rather than the phone, I joined hi5. later, a friend from the US sent me an invitation to join facebook. It was in 2009 when I joined facebook and I am using facebook since then. facebook is able to outsmart every old and new social site because of the innovation. Facebook is constantly developing.

That's just it really, like fashion or tech gadgets, there will always be room for a new social platform. Not all platforms will make the grade and very few will have unbelievable success but this is the story of our lives. The age old concept of new will always have surprises in store for us, particularly when we least think that some new this way cometh from our neck of the woods. Chances are there may even be rare circumstances where the next big thing may even be one of the biggest thing that we have yet to encounter, greatest invention since as they use to say 'slice bread or Facebook even!'
