Fake it until you make it with online marketing

When it comes to online marketing, you need to fake it until you make it when you're the new guy to the show.  No company wants to hire a new person to help them with their SEO and Online Marketing because you could be inexperienced.  Now that doesn't matter if you tell these people that you've been working online for years when in reality you've just started.  Of course I wouldn't recommend doing the work yourself, you should definitely outsource the work to a credible agency that will white label their reports so that you can put your own logos and info on each page.  You may think you know what you're doing, but there's an ego that people have in the beginning when they rank one or two websites and they think they know everything.  If you just started, you don't know what you're doing really.  So you should get clients, outsource the work to a credible company and be the middle man for a while until you're extremely sure that you could be doing all the work on your own.  To be honest, you may even fall in love with being the middle man anyway.  You make a little less money depending on how much you mark up the services, but you do almost 90% less work because all you have to focus on is the client and what they're questions are lol.

Is this a good or bad thing to do?
Well if you're saying that you're the best in the world and you get a few clients because of your lies then you burn their websites because you're inexperienced, it's not good.  If you set up your system so that you'll be working with a company that will do all of the work and give you white labeled reports, it's a good thing.

This is more of a grey area when it comes to selling.  No one wants to work with someone that is new, but you can't tell them you're outsourcing their work.  If you tell them you're working with a different team, they will think you're just jacking up the prices of something they can find online.  The people you're outsourcing to is Your Team and you need to refer to them as so.  If the client asks "How many people do you have working for you?" you'll obviously have to give a response and you could always say something like "We have 10 people working with us and we also have freelance designers and programmers at the ready in case we need them to come in and help out.  For your campaign we will have 1 person doing (something), 1 person doing (something) and 1 person doing (something)".  If you tell them "Well I'll be the only one working on your campaign" they will think that they can spend their money elsewhere and get better results.

Why can't I just tell them I'm the only one working on their campaigns?
Well that's simple, people want to think you're further along in your profession than you actually are.  If you're a seasoned vet in the SEO world, you will likely have a team of professionals working with you and that means the client will have the best results.

Yes you'll be telling them a lie, but it's sort of a white lie if you're outsourcing the work to people who are already good at what they do lol.

Is it illegal?
No, definitely not!  Faking it until you make it as a middle man on an SEO campaign with your client is perfectly normal.  People get paid thousands a month for just consulting, which is insane, and you'll be doing them one better by actually giving them rankings along with a type of consulting along the way.  You're not going to be breaking any laws when it comes to this because there are no laws saying you can't put a digital product on your website and pay someone else to do the work.  This happens all over the world and you can do it as well Fake it until you make it with online marketing

Is it easy to do?
It is, but it isn't at the same time.  When you're outsourcing the work you will need to find a great company to work with because the quality of work is what defines you.  If you just do whatever you think is right, without prior knowledge, you will likely screw something up and piss of your clients when you drop their rankings.

It's not that easy sometimes because you'll have to obtain clients, which is the hardest part of all this.  You need to learn what to say and what not to say in order to close the deal, and this is never easy because one little word can turn the client into a spectator and they will back off lol.

Razzy, have you ever faked it until you made it?
Oh hell yeah!  When I started out I didn't do everything by myself lol.  I had a few teams of people that I would outsource work to if I wasn't 100% confident that I could do it myself.  You have to remember that there are always better people out there and if you can accept that, you can usually build a pretty sweet setup with overqualified people across the board Fake it until you make it with online marketing

In Conclusion:
You need to have the best setup in order to get clients, and if you're new to the aggressive SEO world you will need to fake it until you make it.  Get a few clients under your belt before you start giving out examples because the potential clients will likely want to contact your examples prior to signing up.  This is a legitimate business, people have been middle men for years, and you might like doing just that without having to do the SEO by yourself.  Be the manager on the project instead of actually doing the work and you will notice that you have a lot of extra time on your hands lol.

Well, I personally believe that being honest matters more. Sure this might work well, but if you really wanted to bring strong community, being honest as much as you can would only make people believe in you and your work more. It might be a slower process, but it would definitely pay of in the end.

I agree with Makefort on this one. I understand all the pros of faking it till you make it or the so called white label SEO but I am still not convinced that it is the best thing to do.

I know the SEO business can be hard to get started in because there are so many people and companies offering their services but regardless, what you said sort of feels like cheating on an exam in school. I think I prefer the slow but honest way. But I guess, to each his own. Some people just want quick money without any real effort.

Though I would always like to be honest and sincere even when it comes to business, and do not like the idea of faking, after reading your post, I understand better how to "fake". Perhaps that's not so much of faking, but more about how we "package" ourselves. I like the idea of being the middle person. It does help the clients, and also help to bring work to the people who can really work well in the industry, which is good for everyone. Moreover, I can also learn from both parties.

Thanks again for your useful post!

Well, the more you practice, the better you become. But, do remember that giving your customers big promises and not delivering them can result in many problems, so the fake it and make it tactic should be applied only to a certain degree Fake it until you make it with online marketing

This might work in politics, but when it comes to business it won't last that long for sure Fake it until you make it with online marketing

You will eventually reach the point where you will get buried with your own lies if you continue using that strategy Fake it until you make it with online marketing

I agree with you Razzy but I think it would be a good idea to provide the services and products that were promised to your customers. It will help to get the loyal customers. It may take some time but it will work. So faking it may not work in a long term. I have seen many people applying the same strategy but they never got the success.

Oh, nice article Razzy! I haven't seen such transparency in a long time!

Personally, I never faked it, kind of strange because I have nothing against this idea, I even encourage it to anyone around me, especially in the SEO industry.
I got my current job BECAUSE I claimed I had SEO experience as a freelancer for three years. That was all true but I could easily lie about that and still got the job if I said everything right.
It also depends on how far ahead of you the employer is, because I was like a few years behind with my SEO when I got the job, I was out of the industry for about 2 years and I had some catching up to do, but the thing is, my employer was even further behind, using very old SEO techniques that weren't applicable anymore.
So even if I was rusty, I was still better than what they already had and it took me a few months to get up to date with everything new in the industry and then apply and implement a total new SEO strategy.

Interesting read.

Have you come across people calling you inmoral because of this or have you had anyone finding this out and threatening to "expose" you? Even though it minimizes the amount of technical work to do, I assume putting up a facade is also time consuming.

Finally, do you ever get impostor syndrome? People with "legit" careers and positions get it all the time so I assume the risk here is even bigger, I'd love to hear back from you on this.

I would prefer the honest way, if you want to succeed don't start your business on lies.

I think fake it till you make it does not work all the time. You have to understand that some of the time people have to promote. And often faking that would lead to more of an issues than solutions. So faking it may not work. You have to understand that online marketing requires some results. And you can't fake that part.

I think faking it will not make it. About a year ago, I told myself I will create a website, fill it with contents, monetize the site, promote the site and earn traffic and revenue. I managed to earn traffic and revenue. However, I could not sell the website. I have been faking for a year, but I am unable to make it. There are things that purely depends on luck.

Faking it till we make it is part of our life or living. A lot of our people fake it till the become outstanding so we can do same till we make it despite being incompetent. The great idea is having competent people that deliver on all our promises to our clients. if we have such backbone then we have no problem faking it till we make it.

Pardon me but I wouldn’t be faking it when it comes to work. I have had some experience with the staff that I hired before. They were good in the interview and even convinced me that they were perfect for the job. And you can guess what they really are when they were hired. Anyway, honesty is still the best policy so I will just stick to the truth. That will at least lessen the burden on my mind, lesser pressure, lesser stress.

Well I do agree with you that sometimes throwing a few white lies could help you uplift your profile and business getting you more customers and all. But the most important thing is to maintain your authority by delivering your end of the bargain.
