The most numerous SEO problems young SEOs face daily
Once upon of time the world of SEO was fairly easy, with some quick technical implementation you were able to achieve good positions and outrank a lot of your competitors that had no idea what SEO even was.

In 2016 the SEO world has dramatically changed and because the numerous outdated information on SEO that exists online a lot of young SEO are making huge mistakes, here are some of the most common problems they make:

1. Researching and implementing the wrong keywords. This is crucial, especially for new websites, a lot of young SEO go straight for the keywords that have the most research but are also the hardest to rank for. They ignore long tail keywords with a smaller number of monthly searches that have a lot more potential to rank for.

2. Using too many exact keywords. Their content tends to implement their main keywords excessively and in unnatural ways. This leads to keyword stuffing penalization by Google, results into pages that gain poor positions.

3. The content should not be all about keywords, it should be about the whole topic, in today's Google, we need to produce content that targets an entire subject, not just one keyword.

4. They cheat by copy pasting keyword from other places and not stating the source. You can expect to rank with unoriginal content.

5. They don't implement custom title tags and meta description. This is a huge part of good SEO, I see a lot of websites having this problem, they leave it up to Google to snippet the title tag and meta description.

6. They tend to buy low-quality backlinks and don't focus on obtaining a few but very relevant and strong backlinks that could do a lot more good than a huge number of low-quality backlinks.

7. They have websites that are not mobile-friendly. A responsive design is everything in 2016

8. They don't invest enough time into analyzing their traffic and how users interact with their website. This is a crucial practice for modern SEO, user experience rather you like it or not has become a part of SEO now and figuring out what your website lacks or where the problems are located can only be done be analyzing you traffic analytics.

Thanks for sharing this. These are very good points and I personally made some of these mistakes in the past. For example, I didn't realise the importance of a mobile friendly website and just didn't bother making it user friendly.

Very interesting post. I think your list is spot on. With more Google penalties to bear in mind, this has become increasingly difficult. Moreover, I think that many still place too much importance on keywords, as they were sort of used to this. Before the most important element was keywords, and sometimes this easily led to keyword stuffing, which as we know is not good at all.

Moreover, mobile friendliness has become a challenge in itself. As more people use tablets and even smartphones to look up sites, it has become literally imperative to invest in a good mobile friendly site.

Google has often said it's search engine algorithm is becoming more 'secure' and mobile friendly. Apparently, if you have HTTPS instead of HTTP you will rank higher because this is now seen as quality by the engine. Also, if you have Google Search Console, you will notice that there will be a little text link that says "Your page is not mobile-friendly.". So you best be certain that Google will rank upon mobile responsiveness, too.

Today, a lot of internet users are browsing the internet via smart phones. If I looked at my website device statistics (basically what devices were being used whilst a visitor was on the website) I will notice that a lot of the traffic, about 60% comes from a mobile device. If your website is not responsive to mobile devices, you can kiss your rank, success, and all your hard work good bye, because you are in with the old skool crowd who doesn't have a responsive design. Now, I'm not saying that all your hard work will go away instantly, but I am witnessing my rank, slowly go down the search engine ranks because i am not using SSL, and the website isn't mobile friendly. This kinda sucks especially if you don't want mobile traffic, or don't want a responsive design. But we have to make our offerings to the Google gods, and they want mobile responsiveness along with secured HTTP protocols.

Great post Cristian and I have seen the same with so many people. I have had some people ask me to help them with their rankings but they haven't filled in their meta title or meta description. I always fill this in myself and I leave nothing to chance.

There are so many small things that make a difference to SEO that people don't implement, like adding alt tags to images, adding tags and categories to posts, using bold and underline to emphasize keywords and phrases and adding lots of headings.

Another biggie is to name all files (images, pdf documents and videos) as your keywords.

And another biggie is that I find some people just creating content on their websites and not promoting it in any way, for example on social media. This really does make a huge impact!

In one technical article, I had read that mobile internet users are now the dominant force over laptop and desktop browsers. That clearly means your website should be responsive to mobile browsers otherwise you will be left behind by the competition. Think of how many visitors you are missing when your website works only for desktop and laptop. So if you are an SEO specialist, you should be aware of that issue that the website should be responsive in design.
