Are you a web designer or developer? Have you have plenty of clients and know the ins and outs of what to ask? Well not many people do and I'm here to help you guys and girls through it What kind of questions a website designer should be asking potential clients before getting started.

Now you may already be asking these questions, and that's pretty awesome, but there might be a few you're missing and this post could help you out What kind of questions a website designer should be asking potential clients before getting started.

Below are a list of what I put together. Some questions are very basic and others may seem intrusive, but are necessary. The questions work for most clients and it doesn't really matter much if they're getting something big or small, they just need to answer the questions in order for you to get the best understanding of what they want or need.


Here are the questions I came up with that you should be asking each potential client.


General:

  • What are you and your company all about?
  • What is your end goal for all of this?
  • What do you need in order to achieve your goals?
  • Are you able to measure the success of the new design?



Target Audience:
  • What is your ideal customer?
  • What demographic are you trying to target?
  • What would you like the first actions of your visitors to be?
  • How do you customers react to your product?
  • How does your traffic normally act on your website?



Project Features:
  • Which of your competitors do you find intriguing?
  • Will you be needing a database for registered users?
  • Are you going to be selling items/products and need secured transactions?



Administrative:
  • Do you have an estimated budget for this project?
  • Do you have a specific deadline for this to be finished by?
  • Is it possible to break up the work into different phases?
  • Do you have someone in charge of adding content or are we doing that?




Remember, these are general questions and you may not need to ask all of them. I'm sure, if you're already a freelance designer, you're asking a lot of these. But you may miss some since you're already loaded with work and have to focus on a ton of things that you may miss something What kind of questions a website designer should be asking potential clients before getting started.

You'll need to make your questions sound like you're not trying to be intrusive, you're just trying to get basic information to get an understanding of how you're going to set up the timeline for the project.

This is a great guide to go buy when shopping online for a web designer. If you are serious about making a website these questions along with the cost will be most important. Putting everything is writing is also something important to do is this designer willing to do that? Putting a timeline and following budgets are key to success. We all know that the amount of hours and time it takes to make a website can add up and be very costly. I also would never give a designer more than 30% of the total estimated cost upfront. You never pay more than half upfront to avoid scams and other problems. Thnak you for sharing.

Great list Razzy! I've saved all the questions we've written! This is good stuff, not only for web designers but also any web related services you may offer.
It is very important from my point of view to ask as many questions as possible, knowing as much as you can about what the clients wants and what is his end goal should be a top priority before you start any kind of project.
We already have a pretty decent list of question a client must fill and answer before we start working on its online strategy and it saves us a lot of time, especially useless "meetings".

That was a good list of questions a web designer should make a point to ask a client. Designing a website is no easy feat. There are so many things to consider, and it has to be done in a tailor made way so that the client is truly happy with the final result. After all this is sort of his virtual shop. So the web designer should be fully aware of the client's needs and preferences so as to take these into account when designing the site. This can greatly help in simplifying things, avoiding problems and improving customer satisfaction.

Nice Razzy and I have learned something myself just from your post.

I love your question of what would you like the first action of your visitors to be. I don't think I have asked myself that really, I have just been focused on writing my content and saying what I think needs to be said.

I think perhaps I should ask that of myself every time I write a post or add any new content to my website and keep in mind throughout the entire process of content creation.

I believe that a new ordinary buyer, customer or client doesn't know the difference between a webdesigner and a developer. Probably they heard that you are a guy that knows how to build websites without actually know that you can do only the coding part or just the design part.

For sure, you will have to tell them from the beginning what you can do and what not.
I apply your questions to my services since they cover a more broader of subjects, not only the design part.

I think there are lot of questions on the management side. For example many clients want revision till they are satisfied. And that's not something we can consider for the good business. And for this the right question to ask is how many revisions one can take. And how many times we have to change small things. So the best approach would be should you revise the orders. That's the part one has to consider as well. I think that potential clients need to work on the communication part. Because designer jobs and the business requires that type of the thinking.

For normal buyer you don't have to work so much hard. You should give them what is in offer. That's the way things can be improved upon.

Knowing the target audience is very important when designing a website. Take for instance a website that has a niche about anything Korean like their pop singers and drama programs. The audience are varied although it is dominated by the millennials or the teenagers. That means the design should be appropriate for the teenagers. What if the designer doesn’t know the target audience? He may create a design that is good for the old folks huh. What happens to the audience?
