Do you take holidays off?

Do you take holidays off?

I am very interested to hear what all the freelancers here do during holidays, especially the freelancers with kids.

What do you do when it is a short holiday like 1-2 days for public/ bank holidays?

What do you do when it is longer holidays? Like for example over Christmas in South Africa the school holidays are about 4 weeks long and a lot of businesses close for 3 weeks.

Do you keep working during these times or maybe continue working just not full steam ahead?

Do you shut down completely and then what do you do with your services here? And if you have a website what do you do then?

I am on vacation right now! Do you take holidays off? I will only work for a couple of hours mostly in the early morning before the family wakes up. I really don't call this work because I love it even when on vacation! I am using RDP to connect with my servers so I can work on things and have everything like (software programs) at my finger tips. I kind of like working remote. It is a nice break from the norm. If only they made a beach proof laptop because that is where I will be very soon. Do you take holidays off?

Oh now that is something to design... a beach proof laptop specially made for freelancer. It must be easy to see the screen in the sun (this is a big gripe with me working outside) and the battery life must be very long so that you can stay right on the shore without having to plug in.

I am the same Webguy2024, I just don't stop working. I do take time off and work much less, but I can't remember the last time I didn't turn my laptop on in a day.

Well, maybe for me I don't see my job as work because I can turn my laptop anytime and anywhere.

I just started out and I have not taken a break since since then but what I do is to take breaks in between my working hours. I enjoy what I'm doing,so I will hardly take a break.

I do not take holiday off. I wish I could do it. It cost a lot of money taking a holiday off and going somewhere else. Its better for me to stay home and work still in front of my computer laptop.

During the summer holidays I end up working fewer hours because there is more noise and activity with the kids at home. The same applies in Christmas holidays - I basically try to reduce the workload a bit so as to keep up with the limited time. On those few public holidays I tend to work very little or none at all as it is just 1 day. But longer periods can be devastating for a freelancer. I try to be as flexible as possible, while keeping some time for the family.

I also treat myself out on short holidays. I only go and visit our rural home with family on long holidays. I never fully postpone work unless there is no much work to do.

I usually do take time off. But if I'm not going anywhere, like away from home, I usually can't help myself and I'll still work for my important clients.
If I'm away like in a vacation or something, I do check my email and respond to people, but don't quite deliver until I get home.

Now that I think about it, I haven't got myself a vacation bigger then 1 week in years now.

LOL that is exactly what I am seeing here from all the freelancers, nobody here truly takes time off like in traditional jobs! I only took 2 weeks off to have a c-section with each kid and I still took my ipad into hospital with me each time and worked a bit!

Hi Lynne thanks for your nice question. I am working for long times as freelancer but I never work off for long like a week or more except sickens. I do not take any holiday chance for 1 day or 2 days. I tried to do work for everyday. Though it is feel like boring and sometimes my wife comment me a robot man. I have really no chance to leave the work for long. Even our religious holiday, I try to do work at least few. So life is now work and work and work. I am sure after achieving my goal, I never do such nonstop work.

If you are working towards a goal then there is nothing wrong with working hard and long hours for a period of time. Just remember though that you are not a robot so you could burn out. Make sure to monitor yourself and take some time off when you can feel things are getting too much!

I have had that thought of taking holidays off in the course of my work. Imean working as a freelancer over time has not been an easy task and it is for that reason that I would have to take a break in the future. I work offline and combing both has not been easy so there is a need for a break sometime in the future.

I had a vacation 7 times this year to 7 countries. When I am on a holiday, I allocate time for my freelancing as much as possible. It is usually in the morning when I would wake up early. Another time before bedtime when I am not very tired. I am used to that kind of work schedule and it is comfortable for me.
