Q2: Are You Happy to Leave Your Comfort Zone Working as a Freelancer?

This is Question 2 of my 10 part series on 10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Becoming a Full Time Freelancer.

Question 2: Are You Happy to Leave Your Comfort Zone?

When you're starting out as a freelancer, and even when you're a full time busy one, you'll have to see it for what it is and that's a business. So you'll have to see it and treat it like you would running a business too. You may have to do everything yourself at first such as actually finding clients to work for, advertising yourself and your services. And of course, working for your clients and handling and completing all their orders and delivering them on time to keep them happy.

You may not be used to all of this at first and some people aren't cut out for it period. You may find that you're working very long and unsociable hours fulfilling and working on clients orders. And you'll have to deliver all your work on time and to good satisfaction of the client in order to get paid for your work too. Plus some clients might not be in your time zone so you may be up taking orders at 3AM which could be their 6PM when they're home and buying SEO or whatever for their site!

Basically, working as a freelancer can require and take up a lot of your time and you might not be used to or even ready and prepared for all of that.

So you have to ask yourself; am I comfortable with this and can I work outside of my comfort zone for long periods of time?

What about our current freelancers here already?

Do you find yourself working long and unsociable hours as a freelancer?

Would you have it any other way? Q2: Are You Happy to Leave Your Comfort Zone Working as a Freelancer?

Damn, I hated not having a freaking schedule. I was a full time freelancer for about 3 to 4 years. First 2 years were fine, but eventually, I started getting bad at managing my working hours. I would sleep most of the day and work most of the night.

I didn't like the fact that I was becoming more and more of an antisocial character and had to put work first over pretty much everything else.

For any rookies out there: you need to have discipline, makeup and normal working schedule and try your best to keep it. Even though I'm pretty sure you'll probably end up just like me, having chaotic working hours, lack of good sleep and a general lack of having fun.

Bottom line: Full time freelancing is no easy task! And definitely not for everybody!

Well I think being a freelancer comes with loads of the same responsibilities as any other business.

I have personally worked some crazy hours and times to keep my business going and to keep the level of service that I strive to give.

Some of the craziest and most stressful bits for me revolve around trying to be a good mom and run my business. When it is December holidays I don't have the luxury of having a few hours a day alone to work. This last December I was up at about 6am every day with my kids. I focused on them for the day, then when they were in bed I spent an hour or so with my husband and only then could I work. I worked every night from about 9pm to 3am, then slept for a few hours.

Was this worth it? Mostly yes. I nearly made it like this through the full 4 weeks but at about the 3 week mark I could feel my body and mind beginning to really take strain so I took the rest of the time off because I had to. Fortunately I didn't disappoint any clients because I am a blogger.

Things have gotten a lot easier now, but I really must admit that there have been some tough times.

Is it worth it? Of course it is!

Right now my answer is no. It is a big gamble for me to be freelancing in exchange of my full time job. This is not to brag but I am earning good money with my salary and my online earnings is just a small fraction compared to my salary. Besides, I am not yet comfortable in writing and I have yet to gain confidence.

I just started out and I'm not complaining because working for someone also take more freaking hours and in fact, they're in control of one's time.So whatever it is I'm seriously enjoying my freelancing job. There's no hassle at all for me.My problem might be making more money.

If I was not happy to work outside my comfort zone I would never have become a freelancer. When I started freelancing, I began working at night. I am based in Asia and my Clients were in the US. There were almost 13 hours time difference. In order to catch up with the clients, I worked late night.
I also began writing about the topics that were not my forte. I even wrote an erotica for a client because I could not refuse the high paying writing job even though I did not have any experience and was not comfortable in this niche.
