File name matters, I usually name the file as a secondary keyword to avoid over optimization and to expand my ranking potential.
Second, I implement my main keyword in the "alt" tag.
A text caption can also help Google to better understand what the image is about, so do that too.

There are a couple more things you can do the these are the most important. It's up to your website's authority after this as well as niche competition. If you have a low authority website along with a very competitive niche, you can't expect to rank well in Google Images.

It is highly recommended that you name the image using one or more relevant keywords. This can help a great deal in optimizing images, and thus helps you to rank better. Whenever possible include tags and captions as well. This also applies to videos. If I am not mistaken there was a question some time ago about how to do this and why one should make sure to do it, even though there are many images on a site and so it may get to be too time consuming, and you may wish to check it out too. I can't find it but if I do I will send you the link.

You could also point some backlinks to the images.

I have not used Google Images yet and I am glad to learn that you can optimize the images that you post with the use of the proper keywords. I know that keywords need to be analyzed or evaluated to get the maximum effect. But for a novice like me I guess it is just all right to tag the image with 2 or 3 keywords that are directly related to the image. That perhaps wouldn’t harm the image SEO.
