Using edu links is all you need for ranking. Is this true?

Surely, Google would trust a site linked from a university (edu) more so than from any other type of site including a .com site. Do you believe that's true?

Well an .edu TLD is definitely a good link to have, but they aren't the only type of link you need in order to rank high. Sure an edu link is seen as a rare and highly treasured backlink, but you can also get great backlinks of equal value from a .com .net .org .gov and so on. It really depends on various statistics the websites has. If you have an edu backlink and it's on some crappy website with not traffic, domain age, authority, etc. the link won't be valued as high as a good .com domain.

You'll need to get a larger link diversity than just edu links. Having all edu links and nothing else will not look natural and Google will probably hold back your rankings until they can assess you more. If they see all your edu links are from educational websites where you could easily post them by yourself, then you'll probably get a little less value from them. Now if you're on a state university website and get a dofollow link from them, this is seen as great because these websites are ran by the college and they don't mess around when it comes to linking to third parties. This is why Google will value certain domains more than others.

When setting up a backlinking campaign you'll want to focus on various types of backlinks like blog links, forum links, profile links, niche relevant links, and so on. As for the TLD, you'll want a variety of those as well. Naturally you'll have more .com domains linking back into your website because that's the most popular TLD.

Definitely not. What really matters is not the .edu or .com or whatever type you opt for. To rank you need to make sure that you work for great on page and off page SEO, and the backlinks, to mention a few. Also I agree with Lynne about the importance of valuable content. At the end of the day this is what Google will be looking at for ranking.

No, I don't think so.

I have had some of my content rank #1 on Google within minutes of posting it without even one backlink. Adding backlinks after it hit #1 certainly helped that content stick there though.

There are so many things that count towards ranking and I recently posted a discussion about on-page seo... if you have .edu links to rubbish content well it won't ever rank will it?

Yes .edu links are great but there are so many things that go into ranking so I wouldn't say "edu links is all you need for ranking"...

Hi sanfora thanks for your nice question. I never want to say only .edu backlink will make your website high. It is just a kind of backlinks and I agree it has demand as off-page SEO. But, do you believe only off-page SEO can rank your site will high? I do not think so. If you want to get good result on search engine, you must to do on-page and off-page SEO by combination of each other. You cannot expect any result without on-page SEO planning. Even if you get many more high quality backlink. So, if your on-page is not well optimized, you never get good result of search engine. So, again I want to say .edu backlink is good backlink for off-page but you can make your site good rank either using .edu backlink, if you insist on other term of SEO.

I have been reading that a backlink in an Edu or Gov site is considered high quality and it would be great to have a backlink there. However it is not that easy to place your backlink there for obvious reasons that they are authority sites which have a high filtering for submitted information. Regarding quality backlinks I agree with the comments above that you can also get quality backlinks from other sites which are popular.
