What can you do if the domain name you want is not available?

As per as I know domain name very importance for any website for several sense. And for establish brand name, domain name very importance. Beside your domain name will help to other for searching according to what they want. And I think on-page SEO should start with domain name too. But, what you will do, if you do not get domain name of your choose? I think you will not leave the name, if you do not find domain name with your existing brand. And may go for buy from other who already purchased before you, I mean from current owner. And it is common sense that person who you will see the listed, he should charge more then as normal price.

On the other hand, you have to try to get other similar alternative domain name with cheap price. And that should be best option for you.

So, what will you do? Will you go for purchase domain from current purchaser with high price for establish brand name? Or , Will you go for search alternative domain with cheap price?

Share your thought.

I guess that decision depend on two things, how important or big is your brand and how much domain holder want to sell it for. If the price is affordable i would rather buy from seller to have my brand name in domain name, other way, if it's too expensive i would buy some similar domain name from domain registrar like Godaddy.

Hi anweb really I agree with you. This decision depend on how much domain name require previous domain owner? If price is too high, do not need to get for that one. If affordable within budget, just for branding that should be considerable, Either I also go for alternative domain with similar name with my branding. I think ;the' or 'my' forms can work there. Or I will choose hyphenated domain name. But, I saw some of branding company purchased existing domain with so much price like fb.com one of the highest and top level domain ever. I think it is also matter of afford.

I would just pay the owner of the domain that I want if it reflected my business, or just go the easy route to take them to court for using my branded, trademarked, or copyrighted domain, or brand name. Which I do believe is allowed, as Google has done this many times over.

Hi Everett thanks for nice reply. And Yes you are right! if anybody used your brand, you can go for court for taking action. But, you must to have registered evidence or trademark or copyright legality for your brand. If you do not have how you will appeal against them, I think you cannot. It is very difficult to do such thing. And Google one of the largest search engine, and that is why they could success. But as me, It is not possible and I should go for alternative option to choose similar domain without hassle.

Well what I did with my online store is first check the name I wanted was available as an official business name for me to register and then I searched for a domain name the same and then I did a Google search to see if anyone else is using the name for anything. After that I registered my business and bought my domain name easily.

I am not sure how it is usually done but I think in this day and age with the internet being such a vital part of life any company should check if they can get the domain they want before they even register their company name.

If you can't get the domain name you want, you'll either have to settle for a different one and brand it or you can play the legal game What can you do if the domain name you want is not available?

Similar but different domain: I've done this a lot because someone who owns a domain I want, is trying to sell it to me for a ridiculous price. One domain owner told me $40,000 just for the domain name I wanted and I laughed at him over the phone and hung up. I soon found a domain that was similar to the one I wanted to buy and branded it myself. Doing this is usually a better route because you save a huge amount of money. My domain had two words in it and one was an adjective. The first domain was taken so all I did was change the adjective to something similar until I found a domain that was available. I purchased the new domain and spent a little extra on domain privacy. What's even funnier is that after about 6 months I had the first domain owner contact me and let me know that he had his domain for sale and wanted to know if I were interested. I responded with "No thanks, I don't want to pay $40,000 for your domain when I branded this one on my own" he didn't respond back because he remembered who I was What can you do if the domain name you want is not available?

The Legal Game: If you want to go the legal route when a domain is taken but the person either doesn't want to sell it or they're asking for a ridiculous amount of money in exchange for it, you can always contact a lawyer. If you business name is trademarked and the domain owner won't give up the domain, you can pretty much force them to do so through legal action. Normally you can get the domain for a couple hundred, sometimes $3,000+ if you're feeling nice. If you look up a domain and the person is selling it for too much, you can look to see if it's trademarked. If there isn't a trademark, you can register for one and once you're approved, you can force the person to sell you the domain for pennies What can you do if the domain name you want is not available?

That's a very interesting story. This guy trying to get twenty five thousand dollars from you, so you can have the domain name. And then in the long run finding a similar domain, and branding it. It's quite hilarious too, especially after he contacted months later, and didn't realize it was you until you mentioned the amount he wanted for it. LOL

This is why people try to find alternative domains, ridiculous prices, and it's just best to think of alternatives that will fit your desired domain name. But if you have a business, and a name that really can't be changed it's much harder to actually get the domain name that is the same as your business name. When my husband had checked with the dot com for their preferred domain name, it was not available so they got a dot org instead. And maybe if the dot org or any other domain name provider cannot provide that preferred domain name then they will have to change it. Why insist on a domain name of your choice when it is not available? And it’s not a good idea to wait for it until it is dropped by the one using it. If you are creative then you can think of a better domain name for your purpose.
