What did I need to create my own web hosting network if it is possible?

Hi Alegyanhovik.

Starting a hosting company asks for a lot of money to buy servers, and materials and maintain all of this in a safe building etc.
The best solution to start is to resell existing hosting services or to buy a dedicated server and resell spaces, buy a rack then a gate and then, i hope for you, you'll earn enough money to have a complete infrastructure.

Look at Hosting providers websites, they generally have resellers programs.

Starting a web hosting company is not easy to do. There are a lot of teenagers that go out and buy a simple reseller shared hosting, and try to make a fortune on it. This is just not going to work. Most new web hosting companies close within their first 6 months of operation. Out of the ones that stay open, very few make it big enough to not sell out. If you are looking to create your own web hosting, there are a few things you should consider. The first one I always would ask people is:

Do you have the money to start one?
If your not willing to put money into your site, then you should stop now. This is not an instant profit niche, and it could take several months to a year to even start to break even. Even if you start on a small reseller, there are still other things you need to buy, such as other domains, SSL's, hiring staff members for great support, uptime reports, security, billing and support software (Provided your reseller don't provide one), marketing etc.

Okay, so you decided you have the money, and your willing to invest.

Should you get a Dedicated server, or start off as a Reseller?
Pros of a reseller:
- No hassle of managing a server.
- Much cheaper then buying servers.
- Not as much knowledge required (However, should have every aspect covered anyways)

Cons of a reseller:
- You do not have complete control
- You are on a shared environment with hundreds, sometimes thousands of others.
- You are a middle man of having to contact your host in order to deal with real problems.

Having a reseller can be great to start off with if you don't have the complete knowledge or understanding of how the business works. However, you have to be careful when choosing your provider. Reseller hosting does not entitle you to any other special treatment as a client compared to their shared hosting clients. You are still a shared hosting client, and your uptime can reflect it.

Pros of owned servers:
- You have complete control of your servers and clients
- No middle man involved.
- You have the resources that your server has.

Cons of owned servers:
- A lot more knowledge required.
- Server technicians may have to be hired.
- Much more expensive then reselling.
- Security is a major issue. Know what your doing!

Dedicated servers, though more expensive, are much more targeted by clients then people who use resellers. You will always have complete control over your servers and clients. The down sides of having dedicated servers is you will always have to maintain them and keep them up to date on everything yourself. (or hire someone which cost even more money).

Both the pros and cons for reseller and servers are only a short list of a very long one. These are ones that I think would stand out from the rest. Anyone is welcomed to add more.

Honestly, I don't want to sound rude, but to say it bluntly, if you have to ask what you need to start up a hosting company, perhaps you are not cut out to do so.

However, to answer your question, I'm going to assume you are going to be on a reseller. So, make sure you choose a provider that has an amazing uptime. If you are the middle man, the least you can do is make sure your clients are not going down. Do some research before choosing your host. Do not go with one that is offering a huge sale just because their price is low.

You are going to need a support and billing software (I would say WHMCS), most reseller hosts provide this to their reseller clients. Don't expect clients to purchase hosting off you if you leave a contact forum and your paypal email. You should also have a domain reseller to sell domains to your clients. These can cost money, or again, your host may offer you one. SSL is very important. You will not get any clients if your billing area is not secured. You are always able to get a cheap $15/y SSL to start.

Don't forget if you are unable to provide support, you will need to hire some. I can recommend Bobcares. They do offer a plan for those who are on a reseller.

That's the gist of it all. Hopefully you can make some right choices if you decided to go through with making a hosting company.
