My web host claims their up-time is over 99%, but we have some downtime every day on the forum. Maybe every forum host has downtime for repairs. Though I wish they took care of these repairs at a time when my forum traffic wouldn't suffer.

Don't be fool. There is a huge difference between 99% uprime and 99.9% uptime.

In case of 99.9% uptime your website will remain down for 9 hours in a year.

and for 99% uptime your web host will remain down for 3.65 days in a year.

So now you can calculate the amount of loss you are going to make from this.

That's why all website owner should subscribe to a good website monitoring services to make sure that they would get the maximum up time for their business.

Forum downtime is inevitable if you have a bad host. I'm considering finding another host for my own forum but not sure how to migrate my databases.

Yes, downtime is inevitable but you can compare before to migrate. Check who provides the best up-time.

Don't be impressed, if a hosting company says that they provide 99% uptime.

Since

Up Time

Down Time / Year

90% = 876 hours

95% = 438 hours

99% = 87 hours, 36 minutes

99.9% = 8 hours, 45 minutes, 36 seconds

99.99% = 52 minutes, 33.6 seconds

99.999% = 5 minutes, 15.36 seconds

99.9999% = 31.68 seconds

So you can figure out yourself if anyone try to impress you by saying that they provide 99% uptime, sine you know the difference now.

Downtime is inevitable in web world.

How can you be so sure that you don't have downtime for 4 months at a stretch? Do you monitor it 24/7?

Even the web host offers 99.999% uptime will face a downtime of 5 minutes, 15.36 seconds in a year.

So you didn't face downtime in last 4 months doesn't mean that you won't face downtime throughout the year.

And if you have high traffic website then 5 minutes is enough to bring huge damage to your business.

I have never seen my websites down and I have also never received any complaints from my visitors that my sites were down. Therefore I believe my host provides 99.99 percent uptime. I am with namecheap.
