To start up, join major, most popular social media sites like:

Facebook
Twitter
LinkedIn
Google Plus
Pinterest .....

Create your profiles with professional information. Build large list of friends / followers (REAL PEOPLE!) Don't buy bot and fake followers!
Send real and useful information and links to your followers to build their trust. Interact with people, chat, replay, like, share...

Depends...u need to start social media marketing for ur self or u want to do it for others to make some money.
U have to get some tools to do things what other regular people cant do.
for exmpl....i can post to 2000 groups in a single day...i can hit INBOX of fb users...10000 users every day..with a text message.

There are hundreds of social media sites, it is quite impossible to use all of these. Therefore you will have to choose handful of social media sites. When you are choosing, choose a site that is ranked high, gets better traffic, and has more users. You can start with facebook, Twitter, Google +, LInkedIN, PInterest etc.
Create accounts and build followers. Building followers take time, promote your social media links to various sites to gain followers,. You can also start a paid campaign to build followers.
Once you have good number of followers, begin to promote your works.
When promoting, always remember to write a teaser.
