What if someone shares my private videos online?

Recently, I shared an unlisted video with one of my friends. At the time, the video had seven views. But, I think he might have passed the unlisted Youtube link along to someone else or maybe even posted on a forum as there are now hundreds of hits to that specific video. How can I track where these views came from? What should I do?

i think that it is your friend that can answer this. tell him to tell you where he posted your videos. also maybe you can visit viewers profile and contact them and ask where they are from

Unfortunately anyone can share your unlisted video link around, though these links will not be accessible via Google search results.

You should make it clear when sharing a video with a friend or family member that the content is private and should not be shared. Maybe your friend posted the link on a forum to share with others, thinking it was worth sharing.

If you don't want that, then you should make the video private, within a day or so after sharing. That way, the person who got the link will have a chance to view the video within the one to two day time frame, but not have a chance to share it with others.

I hope that information will help you in future video content sharing situations.

You should choose your friends better, especially if they care so little for your privacy as to share your private videos with strangers.

Actually, it would be impossible for someone to share a link to a private video with anyone else as the only person that can view a Youtube video marked as private (on your account) is you. And, that's true when you are logged into your account.

No one but you could view a private video. However, it is possible for someone to share a link to an unlisted video. And, so long as others have that link, they are able to watch your otherwise private such as sharing with yoor friends and family only video.

Pardon me for asking. Why do you consider it a private video? If it is something confidential and since you said there were only 7 views then the best thing to do is to delete the video and you have the closure to the issue. I don't think you can trace the IP address of the viewer. And if ever you are able to trace the viewers, what benefit do you get? Pardon me for this comment because I think it is impractical to post something that is very personal.

If you don't want it shared then talk to your friend to take it down. But I think you like the views and you just want to know where it was posted so just call your friend and ask him.
