Don't share anything such as personal contact details in any public or private place as you never know when Facebook will accidentally allow someone else to see it. Your family and friends will already know how to contact you by address or phone so no reason to list this on Facebook.

Do not post stuff that is personal to you, such as address or phone or email. And only have your pics set to friends only so the public can not see them.

Don't tell the world about your relationship or family troubles. There is a false sense of friendship online and it can seem like everyone on your friend list actually cares about what you're going through when that's not really true. Just keep some things to yourself and don't expose your family in any way online to strangers.

Leave anything personal off your page and never give out any info that others can use against you.

This is especially true of incriminating photos. Don't get photographed by friends doing stupid things or they might end up posting your pics on Facebook just for a laugh. Then you will be embarrassed.

Some people will act friendly and tell you 'secrets', until you tell them a real secret and then they have real ammunition against you. For that reason, don't trust people on Facebook you don't know in real life.

That's true of real life too, don't assume friendly people are your friends just because they are smiling. Even friends can get wicked on Facebook.

Many people feel safe on forums due to the anonymity of the format. On Facebook, you are likely to be sharing photos of yourself, family and friends, so you are very open to Facebook friends. So you are exposed personally. On a forum, most times you don't share photos or know anything about the other people. So in that way it might feel safe for some.

There is no real privacy on another person/companies website. Think about it, all of the staff can see all of your private info regardless.

The best and proven method is to add only things where you do not need to set privacy! Privacy is something you can set according to Facebook users, not Facebook visitors (like search engines bot)!

Just assume all communications including 'private' chats are being monitored. And, it's possible something you say in private could be broadcast publicly if the other person decides to do so. Just don't trust too easily if you don't know the person offline.

Don't share your personal information on facebook. You may use your real name and location, but never give your exact location and phone number.
Set your privacy as "can be seen only by friends." When you activate this option, your account will be visible only to your friends. Letting "friends of friends" option could expose you to strangers.

My sister has set her profile to private such that her posts and comments can only be read by her friends. I am telling her that it is not good to be paranoid. If she is afraid that people would be stalking her then just quit Facebook. Protecting your privacy is as simple as not posting personal information. Why post your home address or even your employer’s details? Think of what could happen if your account is targeted by criminals. But anyway, that is being paranoid already.

Don't chat about personal stuff more so your phone number and address. Always set your account to Private, this would limit the people who can see you.
