Does similar content count as duplicate content?

On a niche site, it would not be uncommon to reference same or similar themes on multiple pages. For instance, for a parenting website, you might talk about babies or cribs on numerous pages. Does Google consider similar content to be duplicate content or are they looking for an exact (or very close) match?

I'm assuming they would classify duplicate, or extremely close... On sites like that, they would probably SEO their content by the post rather then the site overall, but then again with the constant changes Google makes, it's really hard to say what they look for exactly...lol

To take your example further, what about a baby stroller review site. On every page would be reviews of a different baby stroller. That would all be similar content, but not duplicate as they are talking about a different stroller each time. However, there could be a lot of things on each page such as specific phrases that are duplicated, especially if the site uses some type of review format for every page, such as name of baby stroller/specifications/manufacturer, etc and all those things repeat from one page to another. But, that's not so much duplicate content as to what Google is concerned about. Otherwise shopping sites, which use common phrases would also be in trouble.

After all, the theme of that site is 'baby stroller reviews', so it makes sense the pages are about that.

I'm not sure what your own site is about, but so long as your over all content on each page is unique and doesn't closely mimic what is on another page, you should be fine.

Similar contents are of course duplicate contents. Google does not like duplicate contents, it might not only down index your site but even block your site from the searches. If the two articles uses more or less similar sentences, are on same topic, they will be termed duplicate. You can rewrite the content to avoid duplicate issues. .
