    I think the crawler or spider bot is just a tool of the search engine to help in the evaluation of sites for the inclusion to the search list. The main function of the search engine is to produce a list of relevant links to the search based on the supplied keyword or key phrase. The algorithm of the search engine is the major function that decides on which is which of the sites to be placed on the search list. The work of the crawler probably just helps in determining the ranking of the site in the search list.
