Best SEO pratices for my new forum

I am designing a forum like site, where people posts and others can comment....not too complex just a board where people lay complains and ask questions, i am 80% done but have not really looked at any SEO practices...all i am doing is code, code and code because i am coding from scratch...now i am worried, before launching....what are the things to put in place? like titles of posts should be in h1? ETC

The important part of you can control over your forum is structure! The link structure and niche are important for SEO! As you can't ask user to search for popular keyword before starting a thread; You just can set the structure of your link to be SEO friendly. No my-forum.com?id=X; use my-forum.com/forum-title instead! Then, use a niche forum, not general forum; you'll rank higher with a specific niche discussion board!

You already know that forum domain is important and must be close to your forum topics.

My take on the forum’s design is the comfortable look of the boards. I have visited some forums with a cluttered home page that was full of images which makes the display slower. There’s also the forum that I had to click to an inner web page only to find the sub menu that I had to click again. The list of boards that is neatly in a row or column is best for my eyes.
