Do anything they ask of, as long as it is legal to do in terms of SEO.

I would say that you need to deliver on time, the time that you have promised to have everything delivered by.

Deliver whatever you promise! If you promise something, which you can't deliver your customer will not be happy. Basically, this mantra is true for everything in your life How to keep an SEO customer happy

This is interesting. In my experience, the best way to make sure your clients are happy is to communicate and understand keywords very well.
If you can accurately analyse a keyword before the seo begins, you should be able to make a basic estimate yourself as to what should be expected with whatever type of seo you have planned.

Seo for your own site is one thing, but seo for clients can be extremely complicated as its quite unpredictable at times

Do what they want done. Do not do things your way 100%. Be willing to work with them.

Dumbest thing to do is promise #1 ranking really..

Easiest thing is to promise first page ranking and that's it. But before promising it.. make sure you do your research. Otherwise when you promise to rank your client on the first page for.. for example "weight loss" for $150 per month.. you are going to have a bad time.. if you know what I mean.

Totally agree here. I tend to steer clear of first page guarantees even though a lot of my clients hit page 1. The thing is, you can't stop a client from making changes to his/her site while you're doing the offpage work, and some clients will even order other services at the same time you are trying to do your job.

Best thing in my opinion if you are offering affordable services, is to show past example of your work, but do not guarantee page 1. Do your absolute best to get them there within budget and once they do, they'll be your client for life anyway...everyone's happy!

Communication is very important. You have to make sure that you know what your customer wants and they need to know that you can do it.
