    You need to contribute to the blog with quality and relevant comment, respect other blog commentators on the page where you are commenting, including admin of the blog too.

    Comment on recent posts too. If you are commenting on year old posts, they probably will not be approved.

    Thanks for adding this point, YES, we need to be careful while commenting that we are using only recent posts so that our posts would be approved soon.

    Old posts will most likely never get approved. Often the person who has to approve it has lost an interest in it.

    I will agree with MikeQ and robertman,
    You need to post quality comments that is related to the subject. Getting off topic makes them blog owners put you in the the ignored category. You need to read and understand the subject. If possible ask questions. this makes it more engaging and brings interaction, that way you can get more traffic depending on the blog and it's authority.

    Also posting on fresh blog posts is good and if you have your link also, it is going to be a good link juice to google as compared to commenting in an old post.

    Ensure the blog is actually active. If the date on the most recent blog post is more than a month old, it's possible the blog owner won't actually come back any time soon to moderate comments. And, as previously suggested be sure to contribute the highest quality, relevant comment possible on each blog post.
