What kind of events would these be? Is that similar to a press release site?

Like a local event. Something like, gaming conventions, art exhibits and similar events.

Then try to post something unique which can never be considered as duplicate.

If the blog is a real one that you are the one writing the contents then I’m sure there will be no duplicates to worry about. Or perhaps the fear was about the details of the event that was issued by the organizers. I have a blogger friend who said that big events have their media kit that they give to the bloggers and media people. From the kit you can get the details and all you have to do is to write the information using your own words.

But how can one do that since it's an event's blog? You can't easily change it since it might confuse the readers.

Writing on current topics, for instance covering an event, can generate you instant traffic because people are always reading on a trending topic. However, writing on a current topic such as covering an event (football, elections, festivals etc.) can be tricky because there are already numerous people writing on that topic.
If you want to cover an even on your blog, you should stay away from copying contents written by other people. It is better if you have first hand experience on the event (you went to watch the football match, for instance), secondly you need to know about the topic throughly. Thirdly, you should write about the things that are not covered yet.

With the mention of duplicate content, what I understand is the duplicity of the sentences and not of the subject matter. Let’s say a big event was covered by a hundred bloggers. Most likely there will be duplicate titles. But that’s just fine. With the contents, the idea or though will naturally be the same. However, the way the blogs are written will never be the same simply because they were written by different bloggers. Unless there are duplicate sentences in your blog with another blog, that means your blog is original and it’s good as a content.
