In case of image ads, you need to have an enticing and professionally designed ads. Of course, it should be direct to the point so that anyone who saw it will click on it.

I love photo ads for shoes and clothing that are tastefully done as they always attract my attention. I'm sure those cost lots of money though.

From my perspective it is easy to start a ppc campaign. I mean you have to pay a site for ppc and forget about traffic or returning visitors. As you will get traffic which is promised, but you are not promised for returning visitors !
In short it is good for instant traffic, but not for long term :)

in regards to clothing ads, I kinda hate those "men's boxer's shorts" ads on my entertainment blog...
