As for what you mentioned about self promotion, it's worthwhile to advertise your services in as many places that allow signature lines. Just be sure that you are contributing good content to a forum before/after you place a signature line so that you add value to that community. Whenever possible, I try to deliver way before the deadline, so if there are any issues that need to be resolved with the buyer, then I will still have time.
