When is the right time to introduce a pop up on your site?

When should you allow a pop up to occur on your site? Let's say you have a pop up for your ezine/newsletter opt in form. When should that pop up on your screen?

Upon entering the site.
Lots of visitors don't look back at the site for the second time. So, you only get a few second chances.

Optionally you can have the pop-up show when they have read half the content in a content lock system.

Hi Sharla,

I would generally say never because they're nothing but annoying and I tend to just want to get off sites faster if they throw one of those in my face. That's assuming you're meaning actual popups within the browser and not just something that comes over the screen such as modal. Modal style popups are a different story.

Regards,
Karoshio

@karoshio, She probably meant modals.

I say never as well. If I get a popup I am totally annoyed and do not want to check out the site any more.

It's a model of displaying content to only users who have liked your page or subscribed to your page.

I do not care to see popups ever. I am annoyed by them as well and I can not think of a single person that really likes them.

What is a modal?

<-- Click on my name or anybody's profile for that matter.
The small on screen popup you see which shows our profile is a modal.
Modals can be anything from a Yes/No question to full page views in them.

I have to say never because quite frankly I do not much care for them.

A few seconds after they enter, ideally after everything else on the website has loaded up too. When is the right time to introduce a pop up on your site?

Popo ups are very tacky. But they serve a purpose when used for newsletter subscription purposes. Just be sure you are not advertising another site or you will lose visitors.

To be frank, I don’t agree with the usefulness of the popup. I agree that in the olden days, the popup is quite effective since most of the users then would read everything that they can see on the webpages. But now, users are already literate when it comes to webpage design and they tend to avoid reading ads. A popup can be a turnoff so you should think it over before including a popup in your website.
