Treat your blog or website like you would treat your house

I heard this on a podcast and it makes a lot of sense. You should treat your blog/website like you would your house. Visitors come to your house and you want it to be clean, organized and nice looking. You want to leave a first impression that lasts and those people say "Wow, he has a great house".

If you have trash laying around, disorganized papers where visitors can't find their way through your house, junk and dirt, people will not come back. Why is a website any different?

What are your thoughts on this analogy?

Nice wisdom. Also, a well managed blog needs to be updated regularly to be relevant to the readers. Even once a day is fine, if you are saying something that is usable to your reader.

Appearances are everything for a website/blog. If your site is cluttered with ads, it will be an instant turn off to the reader. Not that you can't monetize your site, just that ads should be more integrated in a subtle way. As you say, keep it clean looking.

This does make sense to me. I think that when a site looks good, I am much more inclined to stay on it than when it looks messy or cluttered. I like everything to have a place in my life.

I like this idea a lot. If you treat it like your home, it will always be in good hands.

That is my thinking as well Ralph. If you really care about your projects, then you will do this.

Most of the time. There are some people that do not take very good care of their house nor their sites.

Simplify the look and layout of your site, (just as you would with your house where everything has a place and is organized). Then your site will be more functional for the user.

I liked this idea and it should be so!

Try to follow some leading websites in your industry and you would get more ideas how your site should look. What to keep in your website and what not to keep.

A very good idea, since most of these site owners (for large successful niche sites) spent $1500's to get that professional design/optimization. By simply learning from what they've already done, you can have the same result for free or low cost.

An occasional banner won't really junk up the look of your site, so long as it relates to your site content.

I like this concept of maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the website just like what you do to your home. That’s how I know some forum owners whose waking time is spent in monitoring their sites. I also know that bloggers are always checking on the comments of their blogs. That’s why when I see a forum or blog with a spam, my impression is of a neglectful owner. In having a website, the first enemy is the spammer and second is the troll so there should be a safeguard against this – by continual monitoring of your site.

Nice words of wisdom, simple but yet thoughtful, I wish your advice came earlier my blog won't suffer the way it is now. I would have worked so hard for it but no one taught me how to, I am still patching up from grass maybe soonest I will get to grace.
